What are you into?

We all like games - that's a given, but what are you specifically into?

Personally? Xbox modification and emulation, although I've found that having collected nigh on everything possible, there isn't much furthur I can take it. On a more general level - rthymn action games. Having given up PC gaming completely, I've just bought a PS2, so I'm in heaven with Frequency and Gitaroo Man. I'm soon to re-buy Rez after having my DC copy stolen a while back :) , and Amplitude is on the cards, although I've heard that it makes frequency seem a lot less satisfying so I'm holding off till I've finished freq. I'm having odd urges for Samba again, so I may have to re-invest in a dreamcast...

Et toi?

Amplitude makes you appreciate Frequency more, I reckon.

I've dabbled in pretty much every genre in the past, though I've never had any time at all for sports management or RTS-type games. For a while I was purely obsessed with Japanese RPGs, but the conventions of the genre have pushed me away from them.

It's MMORPGs for me now, I can't see myself playing much else. Mostly because they take up all the time I'll put aside for gaming. I'm planning to get FFXI when it's released over here, and then I'll be set for life.

Platformers are my forte.

Most modern platformers are a bit lacking these days though and the only 3D platformers Ive enjoyed fully from start to finish have been Rayman 2 and 3.

Ill probably buy a PS2 someday just so I can get my hands on Rachet and Clank/ Jax and Daxter series'.

Also *love* Action and Rhythm games. Theres something strangly old-school and addictive in them.

I used to like RPG's a lot but these days most of them are story-led bilge. Bring back the days when you had to actively level-up before a boss I say.

Survival Horror.

I can't get enough of Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Recently finished Clock Tower 3 which was a bit different from the usual run of the mill stuff. The the RE and SH games need to change because the "find these keys to open this door" stuff is painfully boring.

Hopefully The Suffering will bring something new to the genre.

I like pretty much everything except 2D fighting games, just too slow and jerky for my liking.

Fast paced games like burnout 2 or ones with involving story lines like shenmue and mgs are my faves, although i love odd titles like vib ribbon and space channel 5.

I'm into anything with a story, so action/adventure is for me. Currently beyond good and evil really enjoying it.

I also like a bit of shoot em up, mostly via retro and emulation

I like FPS, only if it has good a story to go with it.

The only beat em up I like is the street fighter series.

I like strategy as long as it doesn't involves too much resource gathering.

I don't see the point of MMORPG, simply because I rather spend my time doing something else, like real life.

forgot to mention, platform games are alright, but my fingers are no longer as nimble :)

It could sound horribly pretentious to just say fun, but it's the truth. I love pointing and shooting, driving fast arcade style cars, and just having a blast when playing. Oh I certainly appreciate a gem when it comes along, PoP, REZ, Battle Engine Aquila (I shit you not), but for the most part I just love running and gunning. The sort of A.I seen in Halo, is making these sort of games a lot more fun to play too. The Syphon Filter, Dead to Rights and Kill Switch style third person shooters, are really developing with nice stealthy elements coming in short bursts, to punctuate the action. As soft as it is, the video I saw for Bad Boys 2 the game, just looked like good run and gun fun.

So yes, fun has to be at the very core of what I play, I don't care if it's an old idea, if the graphics suck, if the back story is shallow, if it's free roaming, first, third or isometric view, I just like a good blast. One of my fave game play elements used to be jumping bullets in stuff like Contra. Great moments:D

I don't know weather the above makes my tastes sound incredibly shallow? I always appreciate a game which pushes new boundaries and breaks new ground, but at the end of the day, if it's not fun to play, it's not for me.

Well I love FPS and looking at my pile of Xbox games, anything with a gun or car:

Metal Arms, Rainbow Six 3, SWAT:GST, Halo, PGR2, GTA Double Pack, XIII, KOTOR, GR:Island Thunder, Conflict DS 1 & 2, Burnout 1 & 2, & Timesplitters 2.

It's my US GC that gives me different genres to play with:

Zelda:TWW + 2 bonus disks, Animal Crossing, R:Racing Evolution + Pac Man Vs (multiplayer greatness!), P.N.03, F-Zero GX, SMS, MK:DD, Metroid Prime, SMB 1 & 2, Mr Driller:Drill Land, Rebel Strike and Rogue Leader.

Also got the lovely REZ, + puzzle games like Chu Chu Rocket. But I haven't got into Dancing Stage, Rhythm games or RTS or Final Fantasy games yet. I do love all any old retro games though, and platform games like SMW, Mario 64, Banjo, Yoshi's Island , Sonic 1,2,3 etc..

Hmm.. I like a bit of everything really, but I'm kind of picky what, if that makes sense...

FPS is generally good, (Can't wait for Half Life 2) but then again, there are some you just can't enjoy no matter how hard you try. (XIII)

RPG's are ace, although they need a decent story.

Driving games? Not really for me. Although I like the crazier ones like F Zero GX, Mario Kart, Crash Team Racing.

Adventure. They don't make this genre like they used to ;). I want more classics like Little Big Adventure. I need to play Beyond Good and Evil still, and for £9 on that Gameplay website, I think I shall be buying it :).

Stealth. I loved Metal Gear Solid/2, but I just could not get into Splinter Cell.

Its games like Rez which are great, because you just won't play another game like it. Originality and excellant replay value.

At the end of the day, anything which has a good story is good for me.

To tell you the truth though, I wish they made games as consistant as some old MegaDrive games, like Alien Storm, Sonic series, etc.

I'm fed up with resident evil and devil may cry kind of games :)

( But hopefully I will enjoy Ninja Gaiden )

I am the Quirk master, I like quirky games!

my current favourite is in my signature!

I'm also a bit of an Rpg junkie, but not final fantasy style ones. Oh no.

You'll find me trawling around Morrowind and other similar places!

I love Driving and Fighting games also.

Favourite fighter at the moment, is Soul Calibur 2.

My favourite driving game, and will always be that, is the Tokyo Xtreme racer series on DC/PS2.

I'm a sucker for comical mission-based driving games. Grand Theft Auto is too violent me, I prefer (and absolutely love :) ) Runabout. it is so crap it becomes superb. Part 3 (on PS2) looks like poop, plays like poop, sounds like poop but iI adore it. Hell, I even finished the Japanese version completely! Wreckless is also a game I really truly like.

/me hums the Runabout tunes from The Surf Coasters ;)

I tend to like a good story-led game that isn't an RPG or a point and click. Stuff like Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Headhunter, Deus Ex (ok, it's RPG-like but not overly so)... when the stories good it's difficult to let go of the game.

Generally though I'll play most stuff.

I agree with you completely. I'm a complete story-whore...to the point where if the game isn't completely up to par, if the story gets me into it, I'll forgive.

Case in point: Soul Reaver 2. I really enjoyed the last one, and this is completely more of the same - with pretty much exactly the same flaws - dodgy combat, dodgy controls, and slightly whiffy frame rate at moments. But, it's got a really ripping storyline, and I've become well and truly hooked.

Xenogears - whilst I am really stuck in it, it's going to be the first game ever that I've gone out of my way to buy the guidebook for because I just want to see how the story pans out.

Which is very strange.

I'll tell you what I'm not into: games where you aren't entirely responsible for what happens. Games where it's not entirely your fault - RPGs, RTSs, team-based games with shitty AI - I'm more of an action-arcade fellow.

Having said that, I also detest simulation racing games. Uurgh.

Mainly playin': Amplitude and PES3.

I always loved the idea of commanding huge armies, and conquering things.

But the fact remains that I am criminally useless at these types of games, and I never get past the first minor skirmish.

Which is a pity.

I never got the joy that most other people seem to have had from Advance Wars... :)

I seem to only think fighting games and 2D shmups are worth my time these days - I like a game I can master, not something anyone could do. That said, I'll play it if it's original too (which Halo just qualifies for in my book) so Rez, ICO, Pikmin, Super Monkey Ball et al all get a fair bit of play as well as Ikaruga and Mark Of The Wolves etc.

Fighting games (from scrolling beat-em-ups to 1-on-1 fighters). If it has (good) melee combat, the chances are I'll like it. I list among my favourite games (of all time, natch) - Guardian Heroes [sat], Guilty Gear X [DC], Soul Calibur II [Xbox] (Odd, considering I wasn't a huge fan of the first), Tech Romancer [DC], Street Fighter III - Third Strike [DC], Capcom Vs SNK 1 + 2 [DC], Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 [DC], Dead or Alive 2 + 3 [DC/Xbox], Otogi [Xbox].

Of the above, I still regularly play GGX, SCII, SFIII, CVS2, MVC2 and Otogi :)

I also enjoy the RPG's [most recent: KOTOR], Wargames [most recent: Combat Mission 3], FPS [most recent... err... Halo? ;)], 'shooters' in general (recently: Psyvariar 2 [DC] and Panzer Dragoon Orta [Xbox]) and adventure games [most recent: err... Shenmue II [DC + Xbox] I guess].

But, yeah, mainly fighting games are my "thing" (though I'm not actually that good at them, truth be told )

Fighting games are the best thing ever.

But I also love potentially risky sounding ideas which are pulled off astonishingly well, such as Metroid Prime, or - let's be honest - Amplitude/Frequency.

I would also love to play something in the vain of Shining Force 3 again, because I cannot stand Final Fantasy's "keep pressing X" tactics.

My favourite genre by far is the (action) adventure; series like Zelda (apart from Wind Waker, which I hated), Metroid, Castlevania and games like Ico or Beyond Good & Evil really do it for me. I used to love the point'n'click adventures like the Broken Sword series and the LucasArts games as well, but they seemed to have become pretty much extinct (and BS3 was a failure unfortunately). I do play other games as well obviously, but it's much harder to hold my attention on them.
