Isn't the epilogue of a story traditionally considered a poor place to begin adding a third dimension to your characters?

I am currently reading The Stand by Stephen King, a book that is quite widely quoted as having a major influence on the writers of Lost. They weren't joking. Some of the similarities are startling.

Well I was thinking that but then what about the comment that Ben makes about him being able to help his father? I thought it had more to do with putting the spirits that are trapped on the island to rest. Well we're never going to find out for sure, bastards

His job is to help the dead move on? We don't really know what makes him special and I've long since forgotten what his 'powers' were, but that's a more likely possibility.

For me that epilogue was a bit of a slap in the face, especially when Ben tells them to ask only one question each (and the response he gives about no more questions) It does answer one mystery though

why women couldnt have babies on the island

That epilogue very much had the feel of a comedy sketch parody of an episode of Lost, where Ben just fires ludicrous answers to us about questions we didn't really need to know the answers to - but people have been whining on about not being answered on messageboards. Particularly the Hurley-bird bit. I loved it!
