Starship Troopers

The Shadow

Recommended Posts

Watched a bit of this last night on Five, and thought, "That would make a great game." Loads of marines, blue plasma bombs bombarding space fleets, armour-plated bugs exploding in a sea of orange blood... OK, it sounds a bit like Halo, which isn't a bad thing. Just imagine, thousands of bugs streaming towards you, hundreds of fellow NPCs (or multiplayer characters) all going at one frenetic pace.

What I'm getting to though is that this morning I did a search and this turned up. Looks cool so far, hopefully they won't mess it up. And bring it out on consoles as well. Sorry if this is old news to any of you.

After watching it last night, after not seeing it for ages I'm in total agreement. If done well this could be an amazing game. It could be FPS, flying (maybe the big capital ships and the bombers on the planet?) and even a 3rd person with vehicles a la warthog. Maybe a mix of the graphical style of Metroid and the controls of Halo.

But whats the betting it turns out to be the usual turgid shite that passes for a liscenced game?

It's a land based FPS according to the OXM article. Squad battles against lots of bugs and in their caverns as well. Set five years after the film. I think it says that their will be no vehicles for you to control as you play one of the grunts.

Was it just me who thought the film was like every other PC game ever? Chest-thumping 'shoot-dem-aliens' games are nothing new, although I would be first in line to play something on the same scale as Starship Troopers.

Whens the sequel to the film out?

I think its straight to video, but still.

wasnt it taken from a series of books or something?

i remember reading ages ago about how the later stories (be it the films or original books or comics or whatever) have us good old humans getting a bit more tech'd out with massive power armour and all sorts

would be ace!

The books are abit naff, but there was a cgi kids show for Starship Troopers, it had big suits etc, it was shite.

Theres already been a starship troopers game, it was a c&c style game released in 1998 i believe, it was alright but apparently wasnt that closely reltated to the film.

It was based on the book, you controlled a group of marines, it wasn't bad. Wasn't great either, mind.

Except for the obvious marines vs. aliens theng, eh?

The covenant and the bugs are hardly comparable, are they? And the fact that ST is all about the collective effort and that even the lowliest can become a hero (that regular marine capturing the brain bug) whereas Halo is about an 8' Cyborg trying to get off some bizarre alien ring world with only his own strength to rely on for most of the time.

Apart from the Sci-Fi setting, the two are barely comparable.
