Grand Theft Auto sequel confirmed for this year

I'm betting on lots of 60s/70s stuff, with a smattering of dance and some stuff for the Anglophiles (it's one of the few cities in the States where British bands can get arrested, the SF crowd tends to be pretty open-minded and easy-going/receptive)

Sounds good. I am probably being thick, but I completely have no idea what "it's one of the few cities in the States where British bands can get arrested" is all about.

Hmm. Dunno about this. Remember, True Crime was modelled on LA and the city turned out to be really boring. Isn't there a lot of straight roads in SF? The game could end up really tedious.

It'll be very steep!

That'll be amusing.

(till 10 cars come onscreen and the game slows to 15fps)

I hope the game has a better car generation thing going on - Vice City was incredibly dull when all you see is your own model.

Earthquakes would be fantastic. A veritable motorbike playground with jumps all over the show. But can they pull it off with the current engine?

Maybe i've missed something, but where does it say they're using exactly the same engine as last time?

I'm sure they'd say if they weren't.

Just a guess though.

Doesn't seem like long enough to make a whole new engine on that scale in 2yrs anyway... and I doubt they see much point seeing as they're still limited by the PS2 specs.

Probably the bit where it was revealed it'll be crappy and exactly the same as the last one....

If only my Bandai Psychic-o-glasses were working...

I'm looking forward to this- even though it'll be the same basic concept with newer vehicles and weapons and physics, it's just such an incredible concept from such a proven team that it can't help but be good. Like Halo 2. Or something.

Funny how people say it's the gameplay that's important, then suddenly when a game is announced that is practically guaranteed to be pure fun from start to finish, suddenly it becomes how many car models are loaded at one time or whether the player has enough polygons in his face that's important.

Mission Pack? Seeing as Vice City gave me just as many hours of entertainment as GTAIII, possibly more, I don't see why the fact that it uses the same engine should mean it's cheaper. That's just good code reuse.

EDIT: Yeah, swimming please.

We are extremely humbled by the success of the Grand Theft Auto series and it has made us push ourselves further than ever to create a title in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that will hopefully redefine the Grand Theft Auto series and revolutionize open-ended gameplay and video game production values," added Leslie Benzies, president of Rockstar North.

Maybe I'm naive, but hearing that fills me with a lot of excitement. Woo!

It is pretty much straight roads yes, but then it's very hilly, and I assume they'll be including the town (Forget it's name) over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Plus you have all of the piers down the front, and you'll have the trams going along through the streets, the ferry to Alcatraz (Which will be the setting for some incredibly cool missions I imagine) and all sorts. Gay pride districts will be fun aswell. Missions whereby you must waste the gayers will no doubt cause outrage.

San Francisco is very small too, so the game will feel quite a lot like the city I imagine.

The number of car models directly affected my enjoyment - how the hell do you go about finding the right car for the garage when it's not being generated?

I understand the PS2 has its limitations, but Liberty City had a much more varied selection at a time across it's three islands. Vice City had the same cars everywhere.

Polygons in his face is nothing. Shapeshifting city design thanks to an earthquake is.

Speculation. It's fun.

Are you mad?! San Francisco is famous for its crazy hills. It worked really well in Driver and countless 70's Steve McQueen movies. I daresay the game will no doubt attempt to capture some of that in its style.

Gah. Forgot about that. Very very annoying indeed. It should at least have the intelligence to see that you've been working your way through the list, and try and put some of those cars around from time to time.

True Crime just put me off, the locations were that dull. I don't get why they couldn't just invent a new city. Liberty City and Vice City were fantastic. Long straight roads just sounds dull. I don't care how hilly they are.

Mind you, we know nothing except the name. Maybe Rockstar will take huge liberties with SF and make it practically unrecognisable.
