Grand Theft Auto sequel confirmed for this year

I'm hoping for a Dirty Harry-style 70s theme. San Francisco is inextricably linked to 70s cop films.

Yes, please. As they've covered the 60's, 80's, 90's and retro-futuristic (or something, you know, GTA2), the 70's would be the obvious setting. And music that fits obviously.

The font they've used for "San Andreas" suggests " gangsta rap" more than "70s" to me (unfortunately). ;)

Oh yeah, I hadn't thought of that. San Francisco is not really a city I associate with gangsta rap however. It's the city of love, not hate B)

Indeed, a place where you can be sure to wear some flowers in your hair cos you're gonna meet some gentle people there. ;)

Whatever happens, it's highly unlikely that it'll just be Gangsta Rap. The last two have been praised for their varied soundtrack, why change it?

If they set it in the 70s, it'll all be 70s music. Which would be fandoobietastic.

Despite a two year gap, it's unlikely there'll be massive changes. Don't forget that Rockstar North were making Manhunt in the intervening time.

Gamesradar suggests it may have a gansta rap theme. That would be a bit naff. Does anyone think gangsta rappers are cool any more?

thinking about it, maybe a 70's theme for san andreas and then the gangsta rap thing in gta4?

However, the Bay Area has produced some excellent hip-hop since the mid-90s. And DJ Shadow.

As good as the hip-hop produced in the Bay Area may be, it's still not the 70s is it? ;) (I want a 70s themed game!)

Wasn't Manhunt meant to have been developed by a completely different team at Rockstar North? (I'm only going by what I read; I don't have the game to check the credits.)

I doubt rap/hip-hop would be the only music featured in the game, but it seems it would have something to do with the theme of the game (or at least the type of gangs that listen to that kind of music) judging by that font (as that kind of font seems to be used on a lot of modern rap albums), or would at least suggest it's modern day rather than in a period like the 70s. But I'm just speculating, like gamesradar and all the other games sites are at the moment.

If anyone hasn't seen the logo I'm referring to:

Edited to make more sense of what I was trying to say (kind of).

Pedantically speaking, it's GTA 5.

Well if you include the London one, it's GTA6, which is obviously nonsense.

I think people agree that it's:

GTA (london as a mission pack)

GTA2

GTA3 (vice city and san andreas as kind of mission packs)

GTA4 (PS3 game)

Hmm...well GTA3 was basically a contemporary setting, so I doubt they'll do that again. What would be quite interesting would be an early nineties setting, with more old school rap like NWA and Ice T.

Although obviously 70s would be the best ;)

And what of future games? A 20s themed GTA where you mow flappers down in your Model T at speeds of up to 25mph with the Charleston pumping out of the wireless?

GTA Vice City was created not because of the music though, but because of the influential films and TV of the time. Scarface, Miami Vice et al.

It's likely that San Andreas will follow the same route, so we'll have the likes of Bullitt (ok, it was late 60s) and Starsky and Hutch serving as influences for the 70s.

And maybe, despite the fact it was set in a completely different city, and despite the fact it was released in 1980, can we have a replica of one of the greatest car chases in cinema history, from the Blues Brothers? I know I'd like it. Complete with complementary blues music channel.

That typeface is used mainly by gangs in LA (usually Hispanic ones). It became commonplace in the mainstream over here in the early 90s. To me it strongly suggests something more up-to-date than the 70s.

I disagree. To me it looks like the style of typeface used on old rock albums.

Bad examples I know, but I don't know of any rap albums that use that kind of typeface offhand. ;) I just know it's used a lot in the rap/hip-hop community. I've since seen this thread at gouranga.com that suggests the same thing about the font too (although they also seem to think it will be set in LA).

I'd agree about old (and new for that matter) rock albums using that kind of typeface, but I don't think that's the case here.
