And you said yourself, you can make a game harder by not using quicksave as much.

How much is too much?

I could make it more challenging by wearing oven mitts too, couldn't I. should I though?

So you can have a challenging game with quicksave, right?

Yes, but the same game without quicksave would be more difficult as a result. After all why do you want a quicksave patch for Far Cry? You said yourself to make it easier, right?

Has that not been my entire point the whole time?

I didn't expect the Spanish Inquistion...
NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!

Jesus Marimba, it's great* the way certain people see themselves as the Gaming Police and go around telling others how they should play their games. If people want to a quick save function, if people want to use cheats, hell, if people want to run around naked up and down the frickin' high street with their game CD hanging off their cocks then it's their perogative. As long as what they do doesn't harm another gamer's enjoyment then what business is it of yours? Right, it's none of your fucking business so quit harping on about it.

*ie. no, it's not really.

Again, why are you asking me how much is too much? It's up to the player...

And you could wear mitts, yes. But why the fuck would you do that.

I'd use it to make it easier (or at least, less frustrating) but the main reason I want it is to make it more fun. You're missing the point that including quicksave would just give the player more option. If they think using quicksave would make it easier for them, then they can just use the checkpoints.

:D

Had you actually read any of my posts (as opposed to just making them up in your head) you'd see I quite clearly, on several occasions, made it perfectly clear that I don't care how people play their games - it does not bother me at all.

See?;

But as I said, I don't care what you do, if you're enjoying it it doesn't matter to me either way.

It depends on whether you want your games to simulate the fear of death or not.

Regular quicksaving makes your character next to immortal. Death means little more than a couple of seconds' frustration.

Not having control over save points can often make encounters much more tense, because you stand to lose something if you cark it. The survival instinct kicks in.

I'm still not sure what your point is. :P

I know. :D

Why would putting a quicksave option in Far Cry be a bad idea?

'Good', 'bad', it's all relative. For you, it'd clearly be a 'good' idea.

It'd give you more freedom, thus reducing challenge and/or risk, however. (That is assuming the regular checkpoints were removed and quicksaving was the save system rather than a patched extra).

And furthermore, a game relying on quicksave more often that not becomes needlessly frustrating as a result in order to counteract this (see [again] Tomb Raider 2 and Half Life examples).

Again, I don't care what you do. If you want to patch your games every which way and save every 3 seconds, I don't give a flying donkey faeces. Just have fun!

ah..but as has been pointed out, Half Life had sensible autosaves as well as quicksaves, so everyone's happy (until they get to that sodding alien planet at the end...)

Don't blame me for not understanding what you're on about...

Anyway, we're getting somewhere.

So for me, adding quicksave in Far Cry would be a good thing. (although I wouldn't save every 3 seconds).

What would adding quicksave to Far Cry be for you, a bad thing?

I'm not blaming anyone for anything. What the hell is the matter with people today?!

What would adding quicksave to Far Cry be for you, a bad thing?

If it used quicksave as its save system then it would be easier than if it didn't. Since I haven't played it yet I couldn't possibly say if it was a 'good' or 'bad' thing, nor am I trying to.

I don't think quicksave should be blamed for a shit game. Just blame the developers...

I haven't played a single game where quicksave is the only way of saving. But broadly stating that quicksave makes games easier just isn't true. Quicksave merely gives you the option to make the game easier.

Also, I made a point (in an attempt to start some sort of reasonable discussion about game design) about how developers use shoddy random death to counteract the lesser challenge of quicksave. We could continue with that, but frankly, I feel it'll lead us nowhere.

I found that to be the biggest problem with Half Life. It was incredbly annoying when you fell of the same cliff over and over again.

Yes, now think about how much more annoying and more difficult it'd be if you hadn't saved it 10 seconds before! :D

You'd go insane without a quicksave in Half Life, seriously!
