Dawn of the Dead

Wait, I just realised what a stupid argument this is.

Zombies, in case you haven't noticed, aren't real.

Read the Serpent and the Rainbow by Wade Davis and then tell me zombies aint real. I aint writing the name of the actual chemical that creates a zombified state for 2 reason

1. I cant spell it

2. I cant remember of the top of my head. Tetradoxtoxin or summat like that.

Kerraig Dawn of the Dead rocks. Cemetary man is it good then?? Stars Rupert Everett doesnt it? Some italian comic made into movie isnt it??

I've been a huge fan of the "... Of The Dead" films for years. I'm really looking forward to the new Dawn. The original is one of my favoutie films of all time.

I've seen one of the trailers a couple of times online and on the cinema and saw a new one last night on C5. Looks good. Not sure what to make of the running zombie thing though, I've always liked the slow, creeping element of the zombies in the previous films, but have frequently thought that they wouldn't be that slow until rigor mortis set in.

All I need now is someone to go the cinema with to see the new remake, since my missus nearly cried watching 28 Days Later and now won't even go and see Shaun Of The Dead.

Now I know I'm going to upset a fair few people by saying this but so waht, it's only my opinion right? It won't spoil the enjoyment for the fans.

I don't like the original Dawn of The Dead. In fact. I find it a hore to watch. IMO, its in the region where it's not bad enough to be good but just generally poor. It has this huge following and is often heralded as the definitive zombie movie. But to me, it just poor. the acting, the make up, the diting pretty much everything. It's premise and social comments are great though (mindless poeple ambling around a shopping mall with no discernible agenda - apart from eating of course). The satircal swipe at consumerism is excellent but other than that, I just don't enjoy it. It's quite likely I will enjoy the remake more. Now I know some people will try and sway my opinion with the argument 'you haven't seen the uncut, super directors cut' nonsense but I have, thats the one I own. Yes I own it, even though i don't like it. I bought it on DVD becasue I hadn't seen it since I was a kid and thought I would fully appreciate it now but alas, no I didn't. A blend of the trilogy would be excellent. Night's originality, Dawn's satire and Day's greater visual work (acting, editing, make up).

I was similarly disappointed with 28 Days Later. That had great potential and some excellent ideas but was poorly executed. It didn't help that I found the female character one of the most annoying screen characters of all time (up there with the guy in the wheelchair in the origianl Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the black hooker ih Phone Booth).

My favourite zombie film has to be Return Of The Living Dead. Not for the scares but for the laugh out load hilarity and entertainment value. Although I am sure Shaun Of The Dead will change that soon.

It's okay to disagree, dude. The negative points you raise seem perfectly valid to me; although the low budget-ness of it all has always lent it a weird, unearthly quality as far as I'm concerned. I find it quite an uncomfortable experience to watch, actually, what with the crazy music (Yay for The Goblins) and the claustrophobic bits. But I think that's what keeps bringing me back to it, in the end.

I think the KFC guy has a a point. I love Dawn but there's no denying it looks about as dated as The Wizard of Oz.

This new one will probably lack the satirical punch of Romero's masterpiece but it does look very nice. Some nice scenes, stylish shots and gore (that's what a zombie film needs mr. Anderson).

For me the reason why dawn stands head and shoulders above is because it treats its subject matter with utmost respect. there are no contrivances in the plot, no cheap scares and no hackneyed subplot about leaked radiation. It has its themes and it has its message and it stays focused on them. It also convinces me utterly that this is a world on the brink of an epidemic it doesnt understand. the TV station opening and the siege on the projects are genius little snippets of humanity trying to cope under its collapsing social structure.

Its hella dated though

dawn of the dead...right...is about a consumerist society slowly spiralling out of control...right...and they dont notice things have got out of hand until its too late...ok...and even then they try to fix things by consumerist means...like hiding in a shopping mall...or broadcasting helpsite addresses on tv etc

So how in the hell does this fit into the Dawn universe in any way?

Nurse Ana (Sarah Polley, right at home in a zombie movie and looking a lot like all three protagonists from Romero's Dead trilogy) goes home after her shift and wakes up to a world in flames. Emergency vehicles careen through sleepy suburban Wisconsin streets and the little girl next door takes a chunk out of Ana's husband's neck...

I'm sorry, but FUCK OFF

She eventually ends up in a nice shopping mall

Along with some other people. The scene you describe is the start of the movie which can be seen in the link I provided. It looks very stylish.

you're missing the point. The location is irrelevant, its the themes that were important.

i knew it was gonna be an action film, but come on, wheres the satisfaction in a world that just turns zombie overnight? the pleasure of zombie movies is watching as the infection spreads and mankind struggles to contain it.

As far as I can tell from the reviews the themes are still there (and the mall does play a big part in the whole consumerism run wild theme). Perhaps not as in your face as in Romero's version but what't the point of making the exact same movie? And the infection still spreads only a whole lot faster. At the very least it will look much better and for me that's enough as I've seen the original enough times. It's a classic satire but it looks so bad that I hurt my eyes watching it these days.

yeah, but if you watch the 8 minute preview, the main character woman keeps just missing emergency broadcasts right from the start (she changes the radio station in her car, she's shagging while it's on TV) so that gives it a couple of hours head start. And with the speed the zombies now move at, it wouldn't take as long as it does in Night.

Anyway, in Night, everywhere was in a much worse state by dawn.

I'm glad this film seems not to be just another shitty remake.

I also think it will benefit from updated visuals as the original does look very bad and I've got it on a really old video that makes it even worse.

The bits in the trailer where shes driving through the smoking destruction looks really cool <_<

I like the scene in the preview where the zombie husband chases her T-1000 style, until he sees the guy standing on his lawn and jumps him. ;)

That overhead explosion is class as well.

yeah, I was talking to my brother about this. I reckon it'll be one of those films where yu'll have to get it on DVD, just so you can watch everything that is going on in the background, rather than concentrating on the main action.

hmm it does seem a shame that for it to be made it had to have a license, when really without the remake title it would probably have received a lot less criticism. Or maybe I'm talking shit. Anyway the original ranks as one of my favourite films ever so I'll still have that no matter how this turns out.
