Dawn of the Dead

I'm hoping to get this on DVD in the next couple of days (Arrrr! Avast! Etc!). I would go the cinema to watch it, but my missus is point blank refusing to go, and I don't fancy going by myself and looking like a Billy No Mates.

As soon as I've seen it, I'll post a short and informative review on here....

Just saw it today, and I have to say I loved it. Don't expect Shakespeare, but its still good fun. Some genuinely horrifying bits. The zombies, yes, are more 28 Days Later than shambling horde a la Night of the Living Dead, but thats cool. We need to keep chopping and changing the monster mythoses (mythii?) to keep them interesting.

Now, to see the original.

You'll probably like Resident Evil 4... the "zombies" are fast and smart. And oh so tasty too!

I can't wait to see Dawn of the Dead....now if they could only make Day of the Dead good...

By that you are not implying the original Day of the Dead isn't good surely? You mean you want a good remake? the original is by far the greatest horror movie of the 80's

Hey there.

I too think Day of the Dead kinda sucks. There are a whole bunch of moment in it that I love... But on the whole I think it's kinda lame. I Think Dawn of the Dead is infinitely better.

"the original is by far the greatest horror movie of the 80's"

The Thing is the greatest horror movie (and one of the greatest movies full stop) of the 80's (if not of all time). That is a well known medical FACT.

Despin out.

The thing was made in 1982 and takes pride of place as my second favourite horror movie of the 80's

When was the last time you watched Day despin? Of course its all opinion but Day is just the perfect apocalypse movie in my eyes. There's never been a better setting (except possibly the thing), it has an incredible villain (Rhodes), it's claustophobic as hell, unpredictable, the acting and script is phenomenal, it has the trademark Romero social satire in spades and an absolutely kick ass ending. It has the best dialogue of any horror i've ever seen too.

Dawn of the Dead is the movie that cemented my love for film, so it'll always be my favourite movie, but Day is the one i've forced all my friends and girlfriends to watch time and again.

Saw Dawn of the Dead today. Really enjoyed it and thought it was an excellent "re-imagining" of the original. I'd highly recommend it.

Spoilers yellowed out below...

Agree with what many others have said - the pre-credits sequence is fantastic, really sets the scene and the bedroom attack scene is particualrly grisly and frightening - when Ana turns aroud and sees her seconds-deceased husband standing up again and calls his name only for him to launch an immediate, vicious, inhuman attack...<shudder!>. Once the film progresses to the mall I never really felt that it reached the same level of intensity, despite the ever increasing numbers of zombies (although it's still pretty relentless). Romero's original zombies were often shambling, bumbling idiots which only posed a real threat if they were allowed to surprise or overwelm their prey. Here their animalistic viciousness really cranks the experience up a level and you feel that even a single zombie is a real menace.

The running zombies were both a good and a bad thing. On the positive side it made them extremely dangerous and frightening assailants when encountered, especially in enclosed environments (the opening scenes, the sports-shop attack, the fat woman etc), but on the negative side some of the scenes where the protagonist were being pursued were very reminiscent of 28 days later and it felt more like they were being chased by an angry mob rather than the ravenous, re-animated, flesh-eating corpses they're supposed to be.

There's plenty of gore in the flm but the editing means that it's only seen in quick cuts rather than the showcasing that accompanied Tom Savini's effects in Romero's original Dawn (and Day) of the Dead. This insn't necessarily a bad thing though - it's a film after all, not an effects showcase. In a possible haomage to the 1978 version a zombie does get it's head blown off with a shotgun, but not in the same grand-guignol fashion as the original.

Got to say that I loved the effects shot where the reversing truck "brains" three or four zombies as they run mindlessly into the back of it in their attempt to get at the occupants. I thought that was a seamless piece of work!

Although it would no doubt have spoiled the pacing, I'd have loved to see how all the other characters came to arrive at the mall as it would be interesting to see the initial shock and suprise of the outbreak from the other characters points of view. Maybe there will be more on the DVD release - there were certainly scenes that I'd seen in trailers etc that weren't present in the cinema release.

Based on this one, here's hoping that we get a new generation of Zombie movies of this quality and that Romero get's to make his long awaited fourth "Dead" film.

Fingers crossed...

it turns out there is no food in the boat, theres a zombie in it, there is only enough fuel to get to the next island where lo and behold theres a shitload of zombies and they all get killed

Me too, and I'd also spend a day or two on the roof of the shop shooting every zombie nearby BEFORE I move on.

I never get that, people make it to a gun shop stocked to the brim with packs of ammo, grab like 2 shotguns and 3 pistols, maybe some extra clips, and they think they are set?

Then move on and run out 1/2 an hour later!

I'd use up all the ammo clearing the area if I was otherwise just gonna leave it all to waste, ffs!
