Mgs: Twin Snakes Released Today

I'm worrying that it's going to be more "Star Wars: Special Edition" than "Star Wars: Digitally Remastered" though. :/

...

That and I'm incredibly worried that it's going to be regarded as the definitive version of MGS by a whole generation of gamers, which I really can't see it being.

I'm so shockingly bad at this. I blame the controller!

Actually, it feels very weird playing this with an analogue stick. I was so used to the digital pad on the PSX, that I might have to try using the +control on the GC. I'll get to used to it all I guess though.

So far, I think it's bloody great though. It's like having an old friend who you haven't seen in 6 years round for tea. He's a little older, little wiser, but he's still your best friend after all those years. The cutscenes and pre-mission videos have, thus far, been excellent, much improved over the original. The music is very good, although it's not quite as, ummm.. classy(?) as it's younger cousin in places.

The only problems I have is the controller, but I'm still getting used to it. Mel Lings voice isn't as terrible as I was expecting, although I do prefer the old voice. Her new one is very asian at times, then it jumps into a yankee cheerleader "Hey Y'all, have a nice day now y'here!" type thing, which is gash.

And, this is just me being a anal twat, but the Colonel's line where he talks about the members of FOXHOUND has changed. My favourite line of his was the "Vulcan Raven, Giant and shaman" one. I dunno why, I just loved it, probably 'cos it rhymed. But now he pronounces "shamen" like "sharmen."

I can't believe how upset I was to hear it, but I was.

Ahem, yeah, so, otherwise, very enjoyable.

Ok, got mine today and played up until just after the tank battle with Raven.

Good fucking lord it's good. First off the controls. You have two speeds of moving, walking and running (same as in MGS2). In fact, it is the same controls as MGS 2. No bad thing. (although why make you press start+A to bring up the codec when pressing start on its own does bugger all is beyond me).

Graphically its bloody excellent. Really, really good with some of the best textures and animation I have ever seen. Snake and everyon move so smoothly in lovely 60FPS with no slow down anywhere. It's gorgeous to look at and anyone who doubts this is just fucking blind. And it is way better than MGS2 on the PS2. MGS2 was all very flat and samey, here the textures and bump mapping all over the place give it a much more realistic feel.

So yes, excellent and some great revisions as well. When Anderson can't remember the codec frequency for Meryl, Snake flips, whacks himself on the head goes briefly mental and ends up pointing a gun at the old duffer in frustration. Very amusing. Oh, and the first fight scene with the Ninja is just... Well, words fail. It's fucking awesome and really shows the graphics engine off to it's fullest.

So, yes, love this. Great stuff. Can't wait to play the rest again now.

Oh, and the AI of the guards has to get a mention too. Climb into the back of the truck at the heliport at the back and fire the socom to get the guards into overdrive then hide behind the box. Watch as the move in packs of three, checking around and even under the truck, covering them man checking before yelling clear and the the next one moves to check out the next bit of scenery. It's scary stuff and this is on Normal. Get seen and they will get you. And kill you. No fighting them off in this version. It's very unforgiving.

No kidding. I've heard the "Snake? Snake....? Snnaaaaaake" a fair few times already, and I'm only just past Ocelot for the first time.

You can't run, or hide, or fight them off. You're dead.

I really wouldn't want to go through this on Hard. Normal is about my limit I think.

Presumably you can still "trick" the guards in a MGS2-style manner- but like all MetalGear games, the guards are all-but-untrickable when alerted.

I've escaped twice when I've alerted them. Once by dropping down into the sea in the cargo hold, and once by climbing into the ventilation shaft in the tank hanger. They still do that "He's gone, lets forget he ever existed" thing, fortunately otherwise you'd be fucked completely, unfortunately because it's a bit of a loophole really.

Nice stuff Squirtle - looks like another game to buy then  I loved the original MGS, more so than MGS2 to be honest.

I fired up the sequel the other night, just to play around with the AI. It's such a shame that the game gives you the ability to play on one hand, then takes it away by constant codec interruptions and whatnot on the other. MGS3 could be very interesting, perhaps the GTA reference in the trailer means we can expect more uninterrupted gameplay in the next game.

I suppose you could trick the guards. You do get the magazine clips and books like in MGS2 to throw or leave to distract them. It's just the way they work as a team is much more intimidating than in MGS. And if they corner you, they will rip you to shreds. WHen they tell you not to get seen in this one, they mean it.

Right quickly played my copy just now before i go back to work. First things first, mei ling does have a hint of accent, but i like it better before. Naomi just sounds like she cannot be bothered at all, although thats only for a few of her lines.

It seems much easier to be spotted by enemies, noise makes a much bigger impact now. One thing about the guards is the choke sound, its terrible, i liked the one before, but this one doesnt sound anything like a choke sound :o

Still cool bits are when foot prints are noticed in the snow you get a little box appear showing you the guards view seconds before he raises the alarm. they all use radios now like MGS2 so you cant kill everyone and hope to be unfound for ever.

And ive just gone into the duct, but back to work for 5 more hours for me :D Update when i get back.

Oh and the first cut scene is brilliant, explains how snake got to the base loads better and explains a few problems there was with the original one.

Toggle is the only way for first person. Trying to hold Z is ridiculous.

I must mention that the sound is much better than I remember it being in the original.

Crawling through the vents used to be just a shuffle along. Now, you can hear Snake's elbows pressing against the thin metal, and hear it bend slightly with the pressure. That's probably how it was in MGS2, but I am still to play it. Just a lovely, lovely touch though.

Who's everyone going to save first then, eh? I think I'm gonna have to save Otacon, and then be a big wuss playing it through for a second time.

"Fully animated" as in 3D like in MGS2?

The screenshots (and even the box shots) show them to be the same artwork-style they were in the original.

No, I mean the briefings that are an option from the title screen. Remember in MGS where you could get a load of backstory as filmed from a camera in Snake's room before he goes on the mission? Well these have been re-done and are now fully animated and by clicking the right and left trigger you can flick between four cameras and pan them round. I'm not talking about the codec bits.

Oh, and another cool touch. When you get in a locker to avoid being caught, you use the C-Stick to move forward to look out the grille. Move it to fast and you bang against the inside of the door alerting guards to your presence. So you have to move it slowly and then look through the grille so they don't know you're there.

Yep, toggle ahoy! One thing though is that it doesn't save your option prefs. So every time I play I have to centre the screen, switch the jap subtitles off and toggle the FP look and invert it too. Bit of a pain.

you have to invert you're look every time you start the game ? fuck that.
