Flipnic

As a game I think it makes a nice screensaver for my TV. And whoever decided on the unlockable tables needs a kick in the groin.

They do? I'm shit at pinball, and I unlocked all bar the last one on my first (not very long) go. And I dare say that when I play it again, I'll unlock that one too, given that I haven't yet played the 3rd table.

Yep, its all beautiful and stuff, but hasnt anyone else noticed how unresponsive the flippers are?

I thought that. I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Finishing the first table was made a lot harder due to the unresponsiveness.

It's nice, but underwhelming.

Does it feel good when you look in the mirror?

My only point was that it didn't feel like an onerous duty, seeing as how it wasn't difficult. Not that I'm amazing or anything.

Although it does feel good to be this amazing in general, yes.

Indeed.

How are the flippers 'unresponsive'? They 'flip' when you flip them.

The only control problems I have are with them putting the bumper controls on the same button as the flipper - silly decision.

No they dont. they flip about a quarter of a second after you flip them.

Absolutely.

I remember getting a bit of a battering when I suggested that this might not be the best thing ever just after it was released.

The demo tables idea is a real shocker though, I can't even begin to comprehend why this "unlocking" system should even be in a pinball game. I guess its to make it more unique and level and goal based

Absolute tosh.

Nothing uniquely new here brought to the (pinball)table by the ever beautiful dullnic.

"Ohhh theres goals to try and achieve" - just like every other bloody pinball table/game ever.

Stick to pinball dreams/illusions on your old Amigas and everyone is happy.

Even its low price point isnt anything special anymore, lord only knows what I'll get for it trade-in.

Even Halo multiplayer is better than this ;)

Whilst I'm not totally for or against 'unlocking' things in games, each table presents an increasing level of challenge to the player, meaning that getting further in the game is like a natural progression.

The 'demo' idea is a nice one, although I imagine it may be a bit frustrating for people to 'see' the next level without being able to explore it properly.

Why?

That's the concept for pretty much 90% of all games ever.

Yes but 0% of all pinball games.

It makes no sense and I believe it to be the biggest backstep a genre has ever taken.

The idea to include it in such a game is pure foolishness.

Pinball has always been a game that you play to enjoy, not play to complete.

I've only ever come close to 'completing' one pinball table before in my life.

Flipnic's suposedly revolutionary 'mission based' structure is nothing new, however using it as a cheap excuse to not allow you to play the other tables is nothing short of disgusting.

And to make it worse they rub salt straight into those wounds by letting you sample tables, yet forcing you to play through ones which you may prefer less before you are able to actually play the table you want.

Hidious, hidious game design and something that ruins what could have been a beautiful multiscreen pinball game.

So we're agreed then. Flipnic is not a great pinball game. It is still a good game though, just clearly not one for pinball fanatics such as yourself.

In theory its a good game, I'll grant you that.

However the fact that it forces you to play tables to unlock tables is nothing short of ludicrous.

By taking tables and turning them into levels it adds such stupid constraints.

Here's an analogy for you:

Imagine buying one of those Midway Greatest Hits thingies and only being able to play Defender. Now you really want to play Joust which is the last but one game in the compilation, however if you want to play it for more that 60seconds (for arguements sake - i know flipnic gives you a little more time but the games are radically different - anyway ...) you have to complete the other 17 games that are contained in that compilation before it will let you.

Or how about:

You buy the GTA double pack but you only have a 15minute demo of Vice City unless you complete GTA3 to unlock it.

Pinball is not a level based game.

The tables are not levels, they have no ongoing story or continuing timeline to connect them, they are seperate entities, totally different games, yet for some reason you have to play through one to get to the next.

Whilst I agree with the arcade analogy, this bit simply isn't really true is it?

They aren't totally different games at all - they all work the same way (ie. they are all pinball)*. And there is a connection between them; it's the rising difficulty level - the later stages are harder and require more complex skills than the previous ones, so it makes sense that you should start with the easier initial levels.

I suppose the 'demo' function was put in to please those people who simply didn't want to wait, but it seems to have had the opposite effect of making people desperately want to unlock the later stages even more quickly!

Oh, but unlocking multiplayer modes is a big kick in the crotch, since the two aren't related at all!

*Except for that final weird 2D stage, thing.

Dodgy physics and a general cheap feel make it nothing but an OK game.

It's one of the most attractively presented games of the last twelve months. Everything about it smacks of class, from the 'Daisy, Daisy' opening, to the tutorials, to the table design and game content itself.

from the 'Daisy, Daisy' opening

This opening WILL be the death of my PS2. Notice how the monkey randomly cathes different sized fish? (or gets attacked by a crocodile?), well, everyone around here keeps reseting the console to see what fish he'll catch next! Probably not good for it....

WHAT! I hadn't noticed any of that, but I did watch it all the way through a couple of times.

I have to say that I enjoyed flipnic, but it did crash a couple of times on me, which was a bit irritating.
