Anime Film Recommendations

Pretty much anyone who watches animé has seen Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Even if you didn't like them, everyone's seen them. I recommend Patalabor 1 & 2, Mobile Suit Gundam F91, and Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis.

The Ghibli movies and things like Akira, Patlabor, Blood, GITS are pretty much the only good movies, apart from the Lupin 3 movies like Castle of Calistargro and Secret of Mamo. If you're looking for a rich seam of anime, it's best to go for series really. Like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star, Witch Hunter Robin, NieA, Naruto, Great Teacher Onizuka, Full Metal Alchemist etc etc etc etc etc...

If you want something very silly, stupidly funy and super deformed, get Dragon Half.

It's so silly!

There are loads of good anime series, try Excel Saga (another very funny super cute anime).

Serious stuff, try Serial Experiments Lain.

It was released a year before the Matrix though and is far better.

Yep!

Matrix ripped it off, if we're going to start accusing.

But we're not, I'm sure idiot didn't imply it was copying, just similar.

Lain in her bear suit is so cute!

Three Words.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Officially the most fucked-up TV series ever.

It starts off as your basic giant-robot series, but halfway through the making of the show the writer/director had a massive nervous breakdown and all the characters start to spiral into insanity (well, maybe not that extreme, but pretty uncomfortable nontheless.) Add in a whole Pope-load of Religious symbolism and a splash of the old disturbing violence and there you are.

The fans got really pissed off with the trippy series ending and demanded a 'proper' ending to the series, so Hideaki Anno (sp) made a couple of movies to wrap things up, in the most violent, horrific way possible (a little fuck-you-very-much to the fans that berated his original ending.)

One of the only shows to make me think 'fuck - anime characters just shouldn't behave like this.' :D

Two DVD's for £22 at Play.com

Now go and get it.

Films:

Patlabor 1 & 2 [slow, sci-fi/crime]

Jin-Roh [slow, intrigue/romance]

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind [fantasy/adventure]

Princess Mononoke [fantasy/adventure]

Ghost in the Shell [sci-fi/intrigue]

Dragon Half (alright, it's a mini-series/OVA, but it's the length of a short film) [fantasy/comedy]

Gunbuster (again, an OVA, but this time its the length of a long film. And it kicks arse) [sci-fi/comedy/action/drama]

Series:

Serial Experiments Lain [sci-fi/weird/intrigue]

Cowboy Bebop [sci-fi/action/drama]

Neon Genesis Evangelion [sci-fi/action/weird]

Martian Successor Nadesico [sci-fi/comedy/action]

Love Hina [comedy/romance] (really only for adolescant guys though :D)

Patlabor [sci-fi/crime/drama]

All are worth checking out, though it should be noted that many aren't available in the UK - import nearly all the way! (I know that you CAN get Patlabor 1 & 2, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Half, Gunbuster and Neon Genesis Evagelion here [and possibly Martian Successor Nadesico? I can't remember])

Knock yourself out ;)

Most anime is pretty lame, really. The cultish fans will disagree, but even things like Cowboy Bebop have stupid, pretentious dialogue and incredibly obvious, two dimensional characters. If you're new to it and don't want to be totally soured, I'd recommend something like Grave of the Fireflies.

People always forget the magnificent Wings of Honneamise in these threads.

A film even idiot might like...possibly....

It was alright but i wouldn't recommend myself

DVDPacific have the Neon Genesis Evangelion Box set for around £55 (better than 2 for £22 :D) which is essential

I haven't much else than what is metnioned here, apart from Blue Gender (series) and RahXephon (although i've only watched the first 2 DVDs - 9 episodes)
