Eternal Darkness Sanity Effects

Hanging Piano Man scared the fuck out of me. I could hear a creaking when I came in the room, and it didn't actually hit me at first that the guy was hanging there, I was looking around him, then it flashed up to his face. "WAHWATHFUKWASAT?"

Just for info, if anyone's thinking of picking up Eternal Darkness, you can get it second hand from GameStation for £9.99.

(not put in the bargain thread because it's not really a "bargain" as such, but it is a good price if you see what I mean.)

ObEternalDarkness: I've only put in about 30-60 minutes on this one so far and like I said elsewhere, it doesn't strike me as being as scary as Project Zero. From what I've read here though, it's using quite different techniques to mess with your head. My initial impression what that Eternal Darkness wasn't as scary due to the more cartoon-y graphics but I guess it's a grower in this respect.

It isn't really that scary as such - it does get inside your head though and mess with your perceptions in really clever ways.

I actually can't play Project Zero. It really does scare me too much. I fucking hate ghosts..

Tyagi, its not jump out of you seat scary like the dogs jumping through the windows in RE or project zero, it is more messing with your head, makes you think and wonder and it scares you by putting you into impossible situations when you have no health/ammo. The begining of the game is very tame and not scary at all, more like an adventure but the further you get in the darker the story and the game gets.

That's interesting, thanks. I've never really be into horror titles, but PZ and ED are really quite good. I like the literal "spine tingling" you get from certain situations or effects. Like others, I find most horror films quite laughable (apart from The Ring-style movies) but the interactivity makes all the difference.

Unfortunately, having read this thread, ED won't have quite as much effect, but whatever :(

Oh it will still have an effect on you, you may have read many of the spoilors but things will happen that havent been mentioned or that you'll forget about, and some are really quiet clever that even if they have been mentioned, you wont twig untill it actually tells you.

But as someone mentioned before, the ammo bounty, that was bloody funny when that happened to me as well :(

I remember one scene late in the game, where I was running past these blade things (it's been a long time, I think it was blades though) and I got hit by one. Didn't think nothing of it. Then my leg fucking fell off. Then the rest. :(

One of the things I adored about ED was the whole wondering what was actually going on thing. You were told there was something wrong with the mansion, but it keeps you guessing WHAT is wrong with it, until late in the game.

Greeeat stuff.

If there ever is a sequel to eternal darkness, which I doubt, given the sales, do you think that the sanity effect can be improved or even removed for the sequel?

It would improve with better graphics or better implimentation of graphics and more ideas on different effects and tricks. Removing the sanity effect... why?? That's like a Mario game set in the real world with no mario and no jumping.

My only gripe was the fact that when you ran out of sanity you lost energy.

Because to play with a full sanity meter is to miss out on some of the best things (when that thudded began I stopped shocked, then went to the door to see what had happened, then carried on and it came back. Brilliant).

But for me it's the final time you leave the study, and the books are flying about, the floor is sloping heavily, and finally creatures are about. Brilliant.

I found it to be the complete opposite, I have to say.

At the beginning, the large deliberately empty mansion is quite daunting, with the clocks ticking and the irritating camera angles...

...but then you fight some zombies and realise you'll probably never get hit, again, in the rest of the game. And later it turns out you won't fight much else. Not to mention the amount of ammo you get as *ahem* towards the end of the game. I forgot to use the elephant gun completely as I had over one hundred shotguns shells, which all did the job rather nicely.

I think the sanity thing works well at first, but when you explode and die the third time in a row, or see blood running down the walls AGAIN it begins to wear a bit thin. I also got really, really sick of hearing "This can't be happening!"

The whole 'never worry about health, mana, or sanity' thing also serves to create a much less tense atmosphere, as you never have any fear of dying (Early on you'll get a health spell. To cast it, you need mana. To get mana, you move. Repeat until bored). And let's not forget the ability to save when you wanted.

Like a bad curry, it starts somewhere near the top but quickly spirals downwards.

I'm a big fan of Eternal Darkness and its story. I actually got around to completing it three times for the full ending, too. Flawed it may be, but a great experience all the same.

Meanwhile, my copy of MGS:TTS arrived this morning, and the use of sanity effects in the Pyscho Mantis fight brought a smile to my face. Shame Snake doesn't start whimpering, "This...isn't...happening!"

I enjoyed it for the varied settings, story, atmosphere and voice acting even though the gameplay was nothing special.

However, that cathedral boss...

It made me stop playing it on both of my plays through, but I didn't bother coming back to it again on my second go through the game.

The cathedral boss is okay if you play it really safe and use level 5 spells against it and run away rather than level 7. Don't whatever you do go to gamefaqs for advice on that boss, they haven't a clue or they had a much different difficulty corve on their USA versions.

God, that boss- it's one of the most shit I've ever faced off against. You absolutely cannot figure out how to defeat it without a strategy guide or an insane amount of trial and error (in my case it took about a week).

actually it's quite funny.. I remember that I visited my cousin which had imported eternal darkness and gamecube.

they(he and a friend) were stuck on the boss. I came in, analyzed the game, and we kicked it. They were complaining about them zombies and that they couldn't do the spell when they were crawling the space (they was going for the best spell)..

I said: "hey, why don't you just stun them with your camera flash?" ...

it worked.

:)

Oh, and for the sanity effects, I just got a new one today (I'm replaying the game)

I saved the game and as always I tapped 'b' like crazy to get back to the game.

Instead of exiting the menues, it popped up some menues saying delete save games. Before I could say "wtf", the "memorycard is working" dialogue came up saying "deleting all savegames".. I was a bit shocked, though I soon remembered where my sanitymeter was at.
