Beneath A Steel Sky 2

Classic PC point 'n' click adventure Beneath a Steel Sky has been plucked from the archives for a brand new instalment from UK developer Revolution, we can exclusively reveal.

Revolution, best known for its highly respected and successful Broken Sword series, registered the url www.steel-sky2.com on March 4, 2004 (see here for details) and Revolution MD Charles Cecil today confirmed with us that pre-production on the title had indeed begun.

"Beneath a Steel Sky is a game that is still widely respected and we are regularly asked when we will write the sequel," Cecil told us. "Beneath A Steel Sky 2 is a project Revolution has been considering for a while, and has stated to move forward on, but we are unable to comment beyond this."

The game is believed to be at a very early stage in development, and it's unclear as to when we'll see something more concrete, although it is expected to hit PC and next-gen consoles in line with the company's current platform stance.

However, with Revolution's most recent project, Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon, going down a storm with adventure junkies, the revelation of a brand new instalment of a classic name is just cause for celebration.

The original Beneath a Steel Sky released on PC in 1994 and was Revolution's second title, notable for artwork by renowned comic book artist David Gibbons.

Can't bloody wait. If only Lucasarts would let work on Sam n' Max continue and get someone else to publish it. Possibly THQ if they're going to publish BASS2 like they did with BS3.

Did the first have the artwork done by some chap who worked on 2000AD?

If it's the one I'm thinking of then it was aces and have fingers crossed for 2.

That would be the acclaimed comic artist mentioned in the quoted press release.

Not sure if Dave Gibbons did work for 2000AD (although it is highly probable) but he definitely illustrated Alan Moore's Watchmen and is a very good drawer of comic-style graphics.

that aside:

This is the best gaming news I've heard for ages and although BASS was no Sam and Max, I am getting right into Broken Sword 3 at the moment and am glad it isnt going to be the Last Adventure Game Ever, as i had kind of feered since the canning of Freelance Police.

It wasn't going to be anyway, as Syberia 2 and Longest Journey 2 are coming out..

Fantastic. I started playing the original in SCUMMVM a little while ago (i never got round to playing it when it was first released, although i remember seeing reviews and lusting after it, but for some reason, i never got round to buying it, (probably due to the fact that i was rather young and exceedingly poor), then of course, my miggy died, and even if i had found a copy, i wouldn't have been able to play it...).

Now, as long as it's got less crate-pushing, and more puzzles along the lines of the wine rack one from BS3...

I just started the original the other day on my xbox

Oh, if anyone can get Monkey Island 2 to work on it (ScummVMx), please let me know. I copied the files straight off the CD but I get a copy protection thing up on my Xbox when it loads. If I put the CD in my PC, the game starts straight up....

For all ScummVM games, I suggest either buying them (tricky) or nabbing them off P2P networks (easy).

ScummVMx is wobbly - it's an ancient version, and just isn't that great. Use the PC version, it's far better, and frankly feels more authentic. MI2 just plain works on the PC, and you can even play in the fantastic multi-midi mode, which uses midi for the music and adlib for the sound effects; get a decent soundfont and enjoy.

Just to reiterate - for those who can't be arsed to cock around with Amiga emulators, the full free legal version of BASS can be found here: http://www.scummvm.org

UPDATE: 0.6.0 is out today! Woo woo.

I wouldn't be hugely suprised if Revolution shipped some kind of "bonus disk" with BASS and ScummVM along with BASS2. They're big fans of the ScummVM team, and gave them full source for BASS and the first two Broken Swords.
