Consolevania

You mean there's a rllmuk forumite alive who hasn't bought it yet? ;)

Well, I was hoping to win a copy :(

Actually, it's main attraction seems to be Live, which I don't have. So I'm not that fussed about it. I'm sitting and waiting patiently for Pool Paradise.

Just a gentle reminder: can those who download Consolevania using BitTorrent please keep their torrents active if at all possible? FTP is not a feasible method of providing a download for something with this level of demand. With Torrent, the more people download, the faster the speed. It works really well provided there are seed torrent present!

The MPEG torrent is currently not available due to its tracker disappearing. I aim to rectify this today by generating a new torrent and re-seeding.

How's about some of us in #edge FServe the bugger? Of course, that would require actually getting the thing. Grerr...

If anyone would like to obtain a copy in order to seed it or start a server, please PM me and I can arrange priority access.

If, however, I'm flooded with such requests, and those people who obtain priority just act selfishly, then toys will exit the pram very quickly.

# look

You see a pram.

You see some toys on the floor.

You can exit North, East.

Should probably point out that I write that column for Sky, and I would probably never have heard about Consolevania had it not been mentioned on here - so it's thanks to you guys that the show got the coverage.

I hope you'll be mentioning the FANTASTIC "bootcamp" session we had

I think if Consolevania really wanna settle down now they have to sort out some kinda hosting deal with a decent company... if this was available to all through a quick http download then it would be seen by faaaar more people.

Get emailing! Show them all the coverage it's got and hopefully someone will come up with the webspace and bandwidth it deserves.

It would also quickly bankrupt the people involved as they incurred a massive hosting bill for running way over their allowed amount of bandwidth. Bittorrent, and getting it to lots of different people who copy it amongst themselves really is the best way to distribute something like this, since it's cheap. Bittorrent also has the advantage that the more people try to get the file at once, the faster they all get it. Direct downloads will probably incur massive costs for whoever hosts them, and the server will probably start refusing to serve anyone the files after a certain amount of people are raping it at once. It'd be doubly insane considering the size of the first episode - 500 odd MB (the MPEG), or 270 MB (DiVX) direct downloads are still going to use much more bandwidth than most (if not all) hosting is going to allow, very quickly and then the hosting company starts charging lots of money.

I'm talking about a proper company here, not John Smith's "PSX4LIFE.com" fansite.

The DivX copy and demand are both small enough to hardly even figure on financial costs of somewhere like jolt.co.uk

Having a decent home (together with a decent site) would do Consolevania no end of good.

OK, some basic maths and figures.

Let's say 1,000 copies of Consolevania are downloaded via FTP or HTTP from a single server/provider. Each copy of the MPEG is about 1/2GB (500MB) in size.

That makes, 500 * 1000 = 500,000MB or 500GB or 1/2TB (Terabyte) of data.

Now. Consider that you will pay your average hosting company 15 quid a month for a 15GB data transfer cap and you're already looking at 500 quid just for the bandwidth. This is based on just 1,000 downloads. Consolevania did more than this in its first day.

To properly support consolevania with dedicated, public, FTP or HTTP download facilities, you're talking a bandwidth usage of probably a couple of terabytes per month. This is serious cash.

Getting the support of a company willing to hand over this level of transit would not be simple. It would more likely come in the form of sponsorship rather than charity.

Therefore, Bittorrent really is the most sensible way to distribute the program. Those willing to support the torrents with permanent seeds should make themselves known.

Also to consider - Bittorrent is not easy-to-use and beginner-friendly. It would probably be worth putting together a step-by-step "how to download this file" guide.

Well I managed to get going in about 5 mins, and I'm a bit of a techno-dunce. I think it's fear of the unknown that is the problem - I'd never considered Bittorrent because I was sure it would be really complicated, when in actual fact it was far simpler than I'd expected.

And a simple step-by-step guide would help reinforce that!

OK, here goes:

1. Go here and download the BitTorrent client.

2. Install it.

3. Go here and download the torrent file

4. Open the torrent file and leave to download using the BitTorrent client

5. Leave the BitTorrent client open when the download has finished so the file can be uploaded to other people

Hows that?

Well, yes. Putting that on the site would be a good idea, I reckon.

I've shared Consolevania in eMule. So you can download it through the eDonkey network if you want. Here's the ed2k link:

ed2k://|file|Consolevania.Episode.1.mpg|580762952|3E949295B583517246AE36B4A5B3075E|/

I tried to make it a clickable url here, but when I do that it keeps trying to add an "http" bit on the start, so you'll just have to copy and paste it.

I've given it much higher priority that all my other shared files.

tyagi, you can stick this link on your page too if you want.
