Why Halo 2 Was Delayed - updated

Maybe everyone should wait to play Halo 2 before making declarations about it being "the best game ever".

Thats what ive been trying to get at, while the graphics may be super nice, it could have one fatal flaw in it and play like crud, not likely, but look at perfect dark, a superb game that got a slating on release because of the hype it built up.

Perfect Dark didn't play like crud.

And, to be honest, I can't see Bungie screwing up Halo 2 either, can you? Really?

What slating? It got a 9 in Edge, 5 Stars in Arcade, game of the month/year in every Nintendo mag, accolades in Gamesmaster and C&VG.

Some slating. PD is one of the best FPS of all time. Simple as. The depth and amount of features it contains still hasn't been surpassed to this day.

Why ? Because Halo was considered to be one of the best games ever ? So was Deus Ex, but plenty of gamers have vented their anger at the sequel.

I just don't feel it. I'm not saying it's impossible, but given the amount of freedom (and funding!!!) Bungie have for this (and a nearly consistently excellent reputation and track-record), I don't think the Deus Ex comparison is entirely fair, nor do I think they can really make this 'awful' or totally screw it up, can you? I mean, totally screw this up into some unplayable mess? Come on, the amount of playtesting they do would ensure this is - at the very, absolute worst - a rather good game.

Still, time will tell, eh? Roll on 2006!! :(

The thing is, now when I play the long awaited sequel to halo for the first time, I'm running around planet earth and see lush plants growing up buildings I'm going to think to myself

'I remember this started a really big thread at rllmuk'

On a side note, the fact that they are adding little details like this must be a good indicator that they've got a pretty steady framerate. otherwise little touches like this would be out the window.

Pretty sure I read that co - op Doom 3 will be on xbox Live only.

Fine by me. Only if it's the same article I read, there was no correlation between online and co-op play, they were simply mentioned in the same sentence and people made 2+2=5. It's still a pipe dream AFAIK.

Perfect Dark played brilliantly, personally id say its much better than Halo.

But yes i can See bungie messing up, its very easy, a dodgy control scheme could be the thing that kills it. Of course they wont change that, thats just an example of something so tiny that could ruin it. And remember money cant pay for all your problems, same with development time, EG Black and white. Its normally the little things that make or break a game, i hope they do do well, and i cant see them doing anything wrong but it can always happen.

And while magazines didnt slate PD, the public did, it sold bugger all compared to what was hoped. Mainly down to the release date, pricing and the 18 rating. But some people hyped it up so much that it couldnt have lived up to the hype anyways, personally i found it to match the hype and surpass it, but at retail it didnt do as well as expected for many reasons.

And Athlon 64 has once again given a good analogue, another could be comparing Sonic Adventure 1 to sonic adventure 2. Sequels, no matter how much time and money are spent on them, can always go in the wrong directions. I hope it doesnt as i loved halo and halo 2 looks like its shaping up to be a corker, but untill ive played it i wont pass judgement on it.

You know what, I've observed this pattern many times before, where hyped sequals, which either turn out to be let downs, are fantastic but slated by the public anyhow, or some combination of the two are torn to shreds despite being fantastic games in their own right, examples of this phenomenan include Perfect Dark, MGS2 and Deus Ex: Invisible War.

Personally, I'd be quite amused if Halo 2 isn't everything people hoped, in a way I am kind of looking forward to reading the hysterical internet backlash more than I am playing the game itself. :(

And DJ sack I agree, Perfect Dark certainly did live up to the hype and then some, one of the most underappreciated games of all time IMO.

Halo haters...i'll say this for both me and dream catcher.

HUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where did you get that from? When i typed 'I love halo', did your mind read it as 'Halo is shit, its so crap it looks like a NES game, and haribokart loves little gay boys.'?

This isn't a valid comment, really. DJ Sack was merely stating that he'd find the backlash funny, since people always work themselves up into a lather, and place far too much importance on a single title that being made by... mortals.

He's not slagging Halo at all.

So do you really, and I mean really think that they would bother putting "little things" like ivy on the right side of a building if somthing major like control's or framerate or other issues if everything isn't perfect.

That's why I can't see Bungie getting anything wrong in this game, they wouldn't be putting all of this detail in if somthing really needed fixing, would they?

I reckon that all the testing they're doing will probably ensure there are no dodgy control schemes. Probably.

another could be comparing Sonic Adventure 1 to sonic adventure 2. Sequels, no matter how much time and money are spent on them, can always go in the wrong directions.

SA2 was rushed to tight deadline by a different team to that responsible for the first game.

Yes, Halo 2 could go horribly wrong, but if I were to place a large sum of money on betting that a game will actually turn out brilliant, Halo 2 would be the favourite.

Yes i do REALLY think they would, Look at rise of the robots for a classic example, putting so much detail into the graphics and then opps, they forgot the gameplay.

You never read a press release or preview for a game where the developer goes on and on about what the game is doing for it to be crap.

For example, take black and white. 'You can even turn your creature evil and this makes the whole world change to be evil too.' Of course this did mean you couldnt complete the game if you was evil. Theres many classic examples through games where developers place their resources into the wrong places of the product.

Also putting ivy in is done by the art team, the frame rate stuff is partly art, partly programmers, so its possible for one team to put in lots of nice detail but for the other teams to not keep up with their progression if you will.

Daikatana had some lovely weather effects at the start of the game. It didn't stop it from being utter shite.

It better not be 2006!

If it is, then it won't be on Xbox.

That's the thing, MS no-doubt want a Halo game to launch alongside the Xbox 2. I seriously doubt Bungie have time to make a decent effort on Halo 3 for Xbox 2 in the time from Halo 2 release to the Xbox 2 release.

Unless of course, they're working on it already.
