Widescreen and 'normal' editions? That's surprising - I would've thought the vast majority of the DVD audience were only interested in widescreen versions, given the expanding popularity of the home cinema setup in the last few years. Wouldn't people without WS TVs and surround sound systems be happy with the existing VHS versions...?

That's a very naive way of looking at it - DVD players can be as low as £30 these days, and if people are willing to spend that little, I doubt they'd have the cash for a complete home cinema set-up. Besides, I'd go as far to say that only a blind person wouldn't be able to differenciate between VHS and DVD.

Oh dear. The pic with Vader's helmet is nice, but the one with Luke, Leia and Han........ urgh.

Is it just me or is cover art getting really poor these days? The Revolutions cover due out soon is pretty bad too.

At least the full and widescreen versions are very distinct, so you'd hope there wouldn't be too many "I bought the wrong ones cos I couldn't tell the difference!" complaints.

Oh well it's the films that count. :D

Edit: Forget it, life's too short.

Didn't know DVD players were so cheap already. It took CD players a lot longer to become so affordable.

Isn't that box exactly the same as the Special Edition remastered video set ages ago, right down to the silver and the gold for the normal and wide screen editions?

I'm not bothering to get these as its the crappy remastered edition with all the CG that ruins it *HARUMPH*

Yes, improved effects ruin films. It's official!

In the case of Star Wars, it's very true. It may not just be the improved effects, just what they've been used for. That horrible song and dance bit in Return of the Jedi is awful. As is the extended end sequence. They replaced the funky Ewok tribal beats with some midi pan-pipes :)

Yeah, but the actual effects are improved. The stop-motion animation in the original films always looked awful - always! And it always has in every film that's ever used it. The only problem I had was that not all of it was replaced with CGI in the '97 versions. Though Lucas is 'updating' more stuff for this version isn't he?

Agreed about some of the new scenes, however. Though I preferred some of them, others were awful.

I'd still prefer to have the special editions though, although it'd also be nice to have the originals on the discs too. What're the chances of that though, eh?

I think the 4:3 versions are primarily for the American market. In Europe widescreen has really taken off, but in the states they are not really successful. Almost every movie over there is released in two versions or contains a pan and scan option.
