Light Gun Games

Well, they are, aren't they?

Most are based on such a simple concept that they can be explained to non-gamers in a matter of seconds (shoot the bad guys, don't shoot the good guys, shoot off screen to reload). They use a peripheral that's blindingly easy to use and everyone can relate to (no confusing button layouts, analogue doobries or x y axis movement shenanigans; just point and shoot). And to top it all off because they're so easy to play, people want to play which in turn makes people impressed when you are actually good at them.

I was bored over the weekend so I dug out my old Stunner and fired up Virtua Cop 2 on my Saturn. It's still gold. And while I was spending time plugging perps in the face with some well placed shots my wee ginger female flat-mate who plays nothing except Pokémon pinball on the GBC comes home and starts arguing with me about how she's better than me at it (She got the high score. Once. Using gun select.). Seriously: name one other genre of game where casual and gamer can end up in that kind of conversation.

Yes they're probably very limited but in a world of complex stat heavy RPGs and L337 skillz FPS it's nice to have some common ground with people who don't play games rather than trying desperately to get them to explain the controls of some random Japanese weirdness you're sure they'd really really like.

Oh and Time Crisis fans: not even. Virtua Cop 2 is still the Daddy.

Point Blank is seriously the best light gun game ever. The NTSC conversion is perfect and both itterations of the Namco lightgun are without question ultra accurate. Point Blank out Warios Wario Ware, with guns, before the title was even a glint in a Nintendo designers eye.

Anyone ever played 'Terrablast'?

Well, I think that was the name anyway.

Big huge fuck off machine gun that had a nice shoulder strap so you could hold it by your side like something out of Aliens. :)

Now THATS a lightgun.

Was okay...a bit dulling.

Is Time Crisis 3 worth getting on the PS2? I liked it's prequel.

Yeah, played that. A bit bland, really. No strategy to it. Kick-ass gun, though!

Completely agree - I've often thought this when hearing about Wario Ware, which I've still yet to get (hangs head). Point blank with two guns multi-player is absolutely fantastic fun. Quick question, do the GCon 2 guns work the same way as the original by feeding off the video signal?

Thing is though, I'll play them religously for 2 days, leave it 6 months, then another 2 day marathon and repeat.

Weird.

That's the best thing about them though. When i get bored of my current game the light gun comes out for a day or so.They usually get brought out at christmas or times when there is quite a few family members around.

I love time crisis, its just so OTT, and the music is loverly. The most memorable scene for me is on the first level or so, second chapter, your going up the castle, turn a corner, nothing there but an open door, then ten people pile out, guns aimed at you, and start shooting. Just the noise and the way its passed.

Virtua cop 1 and 2 are very nice too. I dont really like the new gun games by sega very much, i dont know if its lack of force feedback or what but shooting people seems very squggy, before you could feel every hit, but now you cant feel or hear the impact anymore, this is evident in cofidential mission and virtua cop 3 especially.

I love light-gun games.

Too bad i can't use my guncon any more because of that free 32-inch 100hz tv i got recently.

Yeah, life's a bitch.

And Virtua Cop 2 is still the best gun game I've ever played.

First game me and my Dad completed together too. High-fives, hugs and tears all round when we did that one.

*Actually, no tears. Just high-fives and hugs. Manly hugs. Very manly hugs. For we are men. Grrrr.
