r-type final pal

Lasers are brilliant

First impressions are that this is one of the easiest R-Type I've played unless I've just got better at it over the years. Feel free to correct me if it gets more difficult on later levels, I'm only up to about level 3/4.

As for comparing it with Ikaruga - yes, it's a shooter but it really is a totally different game. R-Type is R-Type. Ikaruga is certainly a deeper game and definitely harder (normal mode compared with human mode in R-Type). However, I really was expecting to get my arse kicked much earlier on in R-Type Final than I am doing. The attack waves seem quite sparse so far, the bosses seem quite predictable and easy, and the levels seem a bit empty. Perhaps I should crank up the difficulty a bit?

(I'm certainly not saying I'm dead good at shooters, but previous incarnations of R-Type have been tricky). Strangely, the plain 2D versions were the hardest, with R-Type Delta and Final being quite a bit easier IMO.

Still, overall it's really pretty (with some slowdown when the screen gets busy but that's R-Type's style), sound is good and it looks to have good longevity due to the large number of ships you can unlock etc. For the price it seems good.

I very nearly got the PAL version today (at the lovely price of £29.99, no less) but plumped for "Forbidden" Siren.

The dub better not be that bad or else I shant be pleased.

having played a bit of R-TYPE final (ok, a good hour on a display stand in an independent games shop) it's not a great deal like Ikaruga: you have to use your brain for Ikaruga. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that Ikaruga has a lot more in common with the strategy genre than it does the shoot em up genre. That's not to say R-Type is a shambles or anything, though I didn't walk away overly impressed with what I played.

Admittedly, some toss ranger had set the language to German and the 50hz option seemed slow, so my opinion is far from comprehensive.

Out of interest, even though i've ordered the game anyway, does the ship you play as make any difference whatsoever?

Different wave gun, power ups, missiles and gubbins. Not a huge difference, but I can imagine different people having their own personal favourites.

To be honest, with the alternatives being MGS: TS, R-Type Final and .hack//infection, whichever I chose would have been contentious, including Siren.

There's nothing out there that is particularly essential at the moment, save perhaps Far Cry, which my PC certainly couldn't cope with (I have to defrag the partition that win xp resides on every week just to keep counter strike running smoothly).

Anyway, if it's that bad I'll take it back within the ten days and try my luck with the others. Meh, would you care to be anymore specific with your evaluation?

Oh, and I've just won Crystal Chronicles in a competition: is it worth keeping if I don't have a GBA?
