r-type final pal

To be honest, with the alternatives being MGS: TS, R-Type Final and .hack//infection, whichever I chose would have been contentious, including Siren.

There's nothing out there that is particularly essential at the moment, save perhaps Far Cry, which my PC certainly couldn't cope with (I have to defrag the partition that win xp resides on every week just to keep counter strike running smoothly).

Anyway, if it's that bad I'll take it back within the ten days and try my luck with the others. Meh, would you care to be anymore specific with your evaluation?

Oh, and I've just won Crystal Chronicles in a competition: is it worth keeping if I don't have a GBA?

Right, well, it's got a very bad camera, it's not scary in the least, it's pure trial and error at it's worst, the dubbing is indeed toss (but doesnt spoil the game. it's already ruined enough), and it's pretty poor looking. Did I mention that it's not scary in the LEAST?

If you haven't got it already, go get Project Zero. NOW.

Different wave gun, power ups, missiles and gubbins. Not a huge difference, but I can imagine different people having their own personal favourites.

some ships are utterly useless. how many are in the PAL game? i seem to remember a nasty rumour that they planned to trim the selection down somewhat from the jap ntsc version 100(?).

Well ahead of you buddy, Project Zero fits nicely into my "most underrated games of all time" list.

I've not found time to play this one yet, but the concept itself was enough for me to consider this game for purchase.

I can't wait for Crimson Butterfly, it's about the only game to be released in the next month or so that I really want. Does anyone know what the logic was behind renaming Fatal Frame to Project Zero? Tell us a story, guv.

R: Racing would've been, but I've heard nothing but bad things about it. With that, I picked up Ridge Racer Type 4 for £5.

I've got a feeling Crimson Butterfly's going to get no 60hz option. Which means I won't be buying it... Just a strange hunch...

aparently I have unlocked 21 out of 99 ships.

Minor gripes: there is slowdown, there are periods with no enemies (most of the first level for example), the level/enemy design doesnt seem as varied as the original (or r type delta for that matter), the ai battle thing shouldnt even be there really.

Otherwise a very entertaining game

hi yes there's slowdown. Stage 3 was hideous in that regard.

The japanese passcodes work.

With the ships, the wave cannons can be vastly different. You get a lot more commonality in force weapons, but the different ships do affect the approach you use.

Sucking up bullets and ramming enemies to charge the super weapon reminds me of ikaruga and psyvariar at the same time.

bonus points if you name where some of the weapons from the other ships come from..

Well, now my hori stick has arrived I've given this a damn good play last night, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My opinion shouldn't count for a lot about this series as I'm simply terrible at them, and rarely does the screen scroll 5 or 6 screens in length in the original before I'm dead.

But this is marvellous. To steal somebody else's phrase "it's the way you imagined games would be in the future" when you were playing the original. The huge difference for me is that this game features "baby" mode difficulty, so a cack handed fool like me can still see a few levels. You even keep your power ups after you die.

Great fun, and only £15 in Woolies at the moment.

Bought this for 15 hundred pennies last week, and its a mighty mighty fine bargain at that price. Fucking hard though; I can't get past level three.

Not sure why, but I keep getting a different level 2 these days. Whats up with that? The new one is much harder.

It hurts my fingers at times too; I press too bloody hard on the buttons. I used to get this all the time with Gitaroo Man.

Depending on which bit of the level two boss you shoot first (or last, or something), you get a different version of level two, with a different amount of water present (from total drought, to completely underwater). IIRC, there are four variations, based on which of the little red or blue stalks on the boss you shoot first. Or maybe last. GameFAQs will know.

Some of the variations do seem a little bit easier but the main difference you'll find is which Force you're using. The one that moves around the screen shooting things on its own and the one that spins round sending shots in every direction are easiest, since you can hide in the bottom left corner, send the Force under the boss to shoot a glowy bobble, then retrieve it in time to kill the shooty stalks before they kill you. If your Force can't shoot towards the left-hand side of the screen, you'll need to either attach it to the back of your ship and fly under the boss (tricky) or retrieve the Force such that it rams the glowy bobble (easy, but it might get stuck and then you'll have to go and get it, which is tricky).

Also, try to hit the easy to get at glowy bobbles (the ones on the left-hand side of the boss) with a charged up shot. They retract before you can do much damage otherwise. You can kill it on Human difficulty with two or three charged shots and not have to worry about right-hand side bobbles at all, if you're lucky.
