Steel Battalion: LOC

Oh. MY. Sweet. Word.

SO last year I got the original. It got 6 or 7 from edge. It was funky but a little disappointing for 130 notes.

November and I'm on the Beta, new features, better sound and graphics, tweaked gameplay / controls, more mechs, custom soundtracks with many embroyonic ideas, an online only game but only 300 people playing worldwide and a laggy-as-hell connection ruins things.

LAST NIGHT: The game turns up, I get my green buttoned controller out, we boot up and flick through the menus, nothing new so far, then we start playing.

Remember PSO BEFORE it was released worldwide, before the hacking, before the noob slaughters and character theft?

The 130 quid price tag, combined with the limited availability and demanding playing style (ie the controller) has become a natural filter.

There is trading, there is international friendliness (OUTSIDE english speaking games), there is knowledge sharing, there is friend making, there is.......I'm scared to say it lest I jinx it........ A COMMUNITY!!!!!!

And at the core is now what has become, in my eyes, the best balanced game available.

I'm nailing my knocked up insignia to this one.

The greatest gaming experience I have had since the pre quakeworld days

I'm so unbelievably tempted to get his. I had to go through work last night, with the big sexy box staring at me throughout. Pleading with me to buy it lest it goes to someone who won't treat it properly. But £130 is a lot for one game. plus I don't think there would be enough room for it.

I really want it, but at the same time I don't!

We shall see Steel Battalion, we shall see...

The man speaks truth. Really. Even the Americans are super-friendly in this. Shocking as fuck. It's like they really want to HELP n00bs and make sure they have as good a time as possible.

Never quite experienced anything like it online.

Except the fucking lag...

That needs to be seen to be believed. I've just finished a few games on Starcraft where every game you join you're harrassed with "RU noob???", "German?" and a bunch of utter tits who type out the word "go" a million times, in some strange attempt to make the game start faster.

God I hate online games sometimes.

Still, it sounds like there is hope out there somewhere.

Come, child, we welcome you. Come over to us in the Steel Battalion world, leave that silly flesh behind.

It's almost that scary sometimes

I'm sure some of them want me to attach my brain to the controller...

So what are you folks allowed to tell us about the game itself then? What are the scenarios, is there an online campaign, how does scoring and earnings work? Is it possible to play properly as a team, are there any tactics etc etc etc etc?????????

Well I have to say its definitely not amazing. Having no money has forced me to play games I never got round to playing, like Steel Battlalion. I'm up to mission 7 out of 10, after quite a lot of playing. Actually I forked out the old Edge review to see whether I agreed with it, and they got it spot on. The game's fun and empowering once you get the hang of it, but the incredbly anal, linear and harsh level design, coupled with the pathetic AI of allies really wrecks the fun you had. It's good but flawed bigtime.

That's why I'm loking forward to Line of Contact, because most of those bugbears will be gone, I hope.

There's an online campaign, and everything. Every "side" has their own territories on a big map thing, and you have to try and take the enemy territories. It says there's no downloadable content on the back of the box, but people have been swearing blind that there is.

Hmm, I have the original but no Live, and my box's DVD drive is fucked.

Should I get the game now anyway, or wait until I can afford to get my Xbox modded and fixed and get Live and hope there are still copies of it (sans controller) floating around?

Where the fuck is my copy of LoC, that's what I want to know (Amazon haven't even dispatched it yet), I'm desperate to see if all the original lag issues got sorted out... and it would be nice having a game where you don't have to sit there in front of your SB controller for an hour hoping someone else will come online soon.

When it get's here of course, I have the tough task of splitting my time between it and Pandora tomorrow.

LoC seems to have generally broken their computer systems, somehow. I /think/ they've dispatched mine, since there's an order dispatched box thingy on the status page (and it was the last thing in the order), but it's kinda hard to tell, since the bit where it usually lists what was dispatched is... not there. There's the usual delivery info down the left, and the "items ordered" and "price" headings, then a hr and the price breakdown o_O.

Not to mention, their delivery estimate is late march next year. (despite the fact that they apparently dispatched it on the 25th. and i paid for next day royal mail delivery.).

I'm fucking moving halfway across the country (doncaster -> london) on wednesday, too...

:P

[edit]i tell a lie, just went to check it, and it's actually appearing on the page now... they still seem to think it's going to take them a year to deliver it, though...[/edit]
