Spong's XSN Sports 2005 Canned Story.

Its from Spong, so it may not be 100% accurate. Still, the canning of the line is rather interesting. Perhaps there is a simple reason behind this.

EA are going to be develop for Live. It could have been a clause in the agreement between MS and EA. MS give EA no competition on Live. It would certainly help to seal any deal.

Maybe. Perhaps an announcement soon or at E3.

The reason EA don't support Live is not due to XSN Sports at all. They simply didn't think it was worthwhile. Simply not profitable, and profit is what EA are all about.

Yeah, but what tiny profits there are, the XSN series would've eaten into.

Hang on...why did you say that? Nobody mentioned they thought that?

Even with XSN gone... either now or forever, it still wouldn't be profitable enough for EA. They said they wouldn't support Live BEFORE XSN was even announced.

It's an article stating that MS have cancelled the XSN line-up this year. Which they have. It's the EA link that I don't believe.

have they? so no NFL fever then? or there will be but it won't use XSN?

but XSN was so good, just look at top spin (which needs work), Amped and Links. Those games are at the top of the fields so why cancel everything. Gah MS is so dumb.

Entire XSN line-up cancelled. RalliSport Challenge 2 is the only one coming out.

Maybe the other reasoning is that they thought it was too soon for sequels. I mean, Links '04 can't exactly have a sequel in '04.

The only survivor is Raillisport Challenge 2.

.::: In their defence they didn't cancel it just postpone it to the following year to polish things up.

I don't think there was any other way though, sales were not exactly stellar last time around and putting development teams under pressure to churn out this years installment without knowing if revenue will be big enough is tricky.

It's probably better to wait a year and go in full force than to keeps things in the fast lane. Besides they have HALO2 by the end of the year. You think anyone else on XBL will be playing something else?

why not? EA would have had one out for every golf tournament by now.

I can see where you're coming from with the Halo 2 thing but is that really the only Live game coming out at the end of this year. That game is going to have to have the mad support for content download, thing is that i bet we'll have to pay for a lot of it.

Not according to this article:

They say that Links, Amped, and TopSpin are still on, quoting XSN's boss as the source...

EA have always said they don't like Live because MS gets to make money (from Live subscriptions) out of technology they spent time and money putting in (as opposed to the PS2 model where noone but the ISP makes any money directly from online features).

Yeah. One aspect I can sympathise with is the 'making the end user buy a peripheral that they don't technically need to play the game' thing that EA don't like. It's like Nintendo requiring a GBA be plugged into port 4 of the GC for a completely non-GBA-using third party game to allow it to run.

edit: this is what happens to your grammar when you intermittently flick between rllmuk and work while posting.

IGN Sports: Are any of the titles cancelled permanently?

Kevin Browne: No, that is not factored into it at all. Top Spin and Amped are not necessarily every year games. Links is something that we're taking a hard look at what we need to do. Fever, Inside Drive, and Rivals are all purely matters of wanting to make the games clear leaders by taking advantage of the power of the Xbox

IGN Sports: Are there going to be new developers assigned to the games?

Kevin Browne: We are changing one set of developers. We are going away from High Voltage Software and establishing a relationship with a developer that's closer to home. But for all of the other games, the previous developers are in place.

IGN Sports: So if baseball isn't the next game, and you won't comment on Xbox 2, when should we expect to see the next XSN Sports game in 2005?

Kevin Browne: Stay tuned. What the marketplace has told us is, when it's ready, and that's what I truly believe.

I can see why they're doing this. Top Spin, as the man says, probably wouldn't benefit from yearly updates. Neither would Amped. The Links comment is interesting, they probably feel it has the potential to beat Tiger Woods, but want to wait and see... As for their NBA, NFL and NHL "franchises", all are average at best, beaten on Live by Sega's ESPN series, and beaten offline by both Sega and EA. It's not hard to figure out why they're switching developers and letting the games rest for a year.

I thought the reason why EA wouldn't get into Xbox Live in the first place was because Microsoft diddn't want EA to run their own servers like they do on the PS2. Every year when the next FIFA or whatever comes out, down goes the servers no more online play for you unless you buy the next minorly updated game in the series.

To be honest I'm totally on Microsofts side if that is true.

Anastrophe originally posted this but I have moved it in here:

from Reuters/CNET

Microsoft on Tuesday said it will not release new versions of its sports video games this fall in a move Wall Street saw as opening the door to deeper ties with industry leader Electronic Arts. Since introducing its Xbox game player in 2001, Microsoft has struggled to gain share in the intensely competitive sports video games market, and EA has shunned Xbox Live, Microsoft's online gaming service, over concerns about its financial model.

A Microsoft spokesman said three titles that had been planned to be released annually--"NFL Fever," "NBA Inside Drive" and "NHL Rivals"--were affected, as were three other titles--"Links," "Top Spin" and "Amped"--that had not necessarily been on an annual release schedule. Those six titles were exclusive to Microsoft's Xbox video game console. Another sports game, "RalliSport Challenge 2," is still on track for a May release.
