Maybe Ian Huntley would never have been caught had they not been able to pinpoint the last place her phone had been. That's one issue, my point basically being your phone calls and txt messages are already being logged as a matter of course. Given that, what the fuck does it matter what happens on live?

I can see why people would have a problem with this in principle but in practice? XBL is full of random people meeting up with random people. There's been plenty of PGR2 games, for example, with randoms in which I haven't said anything and I've been listening in on other people's conversations.

Personal telephone calls on the other hand I do have a problem with. But, as has been said, this has been going on for so long now without our consent that it's a bit late in the day. Besides, in the current political climate, I think the majority of people would probably be in favour of such action. I bet we'll have ID cards within two years and that's something the British public has resisted for some time.

The Yanks are masters of fostering resenment with everything they do recently and this is another example of them forcing their agenda down our throats. I'd say that's what riles most people.

i'd imagine this is to target individuals/groups who the FBI have reason to believe might use the services as a secure way to pass information to/from that is deemed to be a threat to the USA (and allies) security.

i'll also go out on a limb and say that the organisations involved are doing the right thing and making sure the ability is in place now to wire tap these instead of a year down the line when they are getting tip-off’s about the above and can't do a thing about it.

its called covering your arse..

I'm sure BT would love to know this.

I would imagine BT already know it considering they upgraded all the exchanges about ten years ago primarily for this very reason. Ever wondered why it suddenly got so easy to trace calls that you can have the facility to do it on your own phone (Caller ID)? Thats a tiny part of their system..

Ah, so that explains why the average age of exchange equipment assets is 16.4 years.

have you ever tried making fake terroristy phone calls? it doesn't WORK.

Probably because it get's flagged up, info is looked up about you and you're no more suspicious than Mrs Higgins down the road. This may be completly wrong, as all my MI5 knowledge is based on episodes of Spooks and Bugs.

It didnt work in the days of the IRA becuase the police and the IRA had an agreed code word that the person making the call would have to say.
