Paper Mario 2 shots

It looks like the sequel to Paper Mario, which in turn should make it ace. Paper Mario was one of my favourite N64 games, but one that very few people seemed to buy as it appeared so late in it's life. Hopefully this will be just as good and gain some more interest.

I must agree that the style used in this game looks to fit the Mario world much better than the 3D platformers. Alhough I've enjoyed both M64 and Sunshine in terms of sheer graphical beauty they don't hold a light to Yoshis Island.

I for one am glad to see some 2D developments come out to complement the 3D games. I'm a greedy bastard as I want both 2D and 3D fun with my gaming.

Not to mention the ridiculous amount of money they asked for it. The last few games on the N64 were about 50% more expensive then everything that came before. Still don't understand that move.

Well of course it's not fantastic artistry... it's the ideas and humour put into the graphics that people are getting excited about. Paper Mario was a fantastic game and everyone is excited that we will be gettting an opportunity to play a sequel.

I may have *cough* downloaded a certain rom lately and from what I've played I'm very excited about this new game. But then I love anything Mario... and even think SMS is the best platformer this gen.

Interesting point, but how do you draw a line under what is good art? Surely that is in the eye of the person looking at it?

Hell, if your going to be so anal about it you could say Rez is an artistic failure as most people thought it was a weird looking, ugly game that only seems to have impressed a few serious gamers. To the mass market it's the equivalent of modern art, the emperors new clothes, a game that many commented looked like a Spectrum game.

There is room for many styles of graphical styls to be used in games, but sadly gamers seem to want some bastard form of conformity. With gaming we have a blank canvas to draw wonderful worlds, let's allow some diversity in them for the good of us all.

Its arty. It has character and is clean and crisp.

Its not cluttered, but defined and has good use of colouring.

Like Gradius V, i first thought fuck me. Look at that. Thats nice.

I don't like shot 4 (Koopa), because it looks more like a Flash game, the rest has a great storybook atmosphere and is vibrant with colour and character. The castle in the first pic looks pretty foreboding and threatening even though it's far from realistic. I think it's pretty artistic to create such a 3D world which looks like a drawing that's come to life. While I didn't like Wind Waker's stylings, this fits IMO perfectly with everything I associate with the Mario universe.

Some of them shots (like the castle) look like a proper cartoon and it has that fresh and vibrant' sunny look about it, that many games get so wrong.

It the shades of colour the artists use. They get that dead right.

I wouldn't play it at home on my 36inch tv - don't ask me why, I'm not sure.

Still Sunshine didnt grab me either, and nor did Windwaker.

Nintendo need to change the record IMO. Rez, Ico etc have been mentioned here, and deservedly.

It's high time Nintendo pulled their socks up and came up with some new ideas. Everyone else has to - why should they be exempt?

And I havent slagged any of the games off at all, so calm yourself sonny. Nintendo and the various Mario etc games have been instrumental in bringing gaming to the mass audience.

What I said was, I'm sick of playing games with the same characters over and over - regardless of the type of game.

Getting pretty off-topic here, but I think you're being pretty harsh on Starfox. I mean, it's only had 2 "proper" games (not spin-offs like SFA). It's hardly open to accusations of flogging a dead horse. I mean look at Final Fantasy (12 games), Mario (7 games) or Zelda (9 games).

I think this game looks bloody gorgeous and don't really see peoples problems with it.

That Koopa screen as has been said looks crap because it's just bland and flash like.

This looks almost *too* much like the original (not much of an improvement,) but then I really enjoyed that game, getting a good 20hrs out of it. Got it second hand from EB not too long ago. Superstar Saga built on that game, so hopefully this will continue on again.

The amount of sprites on screen seems impressive, but that big dragon, while nice, is different from the rest of the characters, being part 3D. The rest of them could have been lifted from the N64 cart.

Many characters and locations are familiar. Using the same house for Mario and Luigi is a nice touch. Hopefully there will be a few good self-references for players of the first one.
