As an antidote to the "disappointing films" thread, I thought I'd start a thread about films that you thought were going to be shit, but when you saw them, they were great.

Mine: Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World

I didn't have high hopes for this. I thought that it would get really boring a film set only on a boat, and it seemed to be full of rubbish macho posturing from Crowe.

Instead I was really impressed. The ship battles seemed really brutal, and the characterisation was great, not just from the leads but from all the minor shipmates. And that kid with one arm rocked the house.

So then, what are yours?

weird...

as soon as i read this thread title i thought of exactly the same film!

My mate wanted to see it, and to me it looked really boring.. but i came out liking it. I dunno if i want to really watch it again, but was worth seeing.

Terminator 3. It doesn't touch the other two, but it did surprise me. I thought it'd be absolute gash.

RE: Heaven. Is that that that documentary type film, with interviews about death? It was alright that.

Final Destination.

I went to see it thinking it was just going to be some boring teen slasher thing and came out loving it. The whole 'death is coming' thing was great as were the nice icky deaths. Plus the girl I went with got so scared her face ended up in my crotch. Interesting.

I would have to say "The Scorpion King" & The Rundown aka Welcome to the Jungle" Starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

I saw these films thinking that the wrestler turned actor thing woul make them into utter shite, but turned out to be mindless, enjoyable fun. :blink:

Hmmmmm so many to choose from. First and formost GATTACCA starring Ethan Hawke. Went there expecting nothing and came out thoroughly satisfied with the £4.50 I had spent.

Memento, had no hype when it came out, rented it, found it confusing as hell and have since watched it 5 times.

The X-Files amazed me. I thought it was just as tense and exciting as the best (early) episodes of the TV series.

The Third Man, too, which I assumed would be another dry critic's choice (I didn't like Citizen Kane), but was actually a hilarious and very intelligent classic thriller with one of the most charismatic performances I've ever seen from Orson Welles. Instantly shot into my top ten, it did.

Final destination 2, a few beer's and this become's a laugh a minute fun fest.

yeah, the first one struck me that way. Same goes for the Faculty. Love watching movies you're never heard about and being blown away. Rushmore and Election are other real gems. Blink, too, which gets a DVD release soon.

I'd probably have to go with Lost in Translation.

Somehow I'd managed to miss all the hype about this film and so only went to see it because I'd heard a few vague murmurings. Bill Murray being in it didn't fill me with confidence, yet it turned out to be simply great.

Either that or Mona Lisa Smile which was bloody good too and I wasn't expecting much from it.

Have to agree with that. It helps that I don't worship the previous two films as works of cinematic genius, but I found T3 to be really quite enjoyable. Not an amazing film but I am glad I saw it in the cinema, which is the only really test I need.

Wasn't nearly as awful as I was expecting, although the characters were all pretty weak and the female terminator was crap, but a big thumbs up for that ending

Films are always better when you think they are going to be crap. Film you think are going to be good usually dissapoint.

To be honest I rarely watch a film that I think is going to be crap. I have better things to do with my time.

I didn't have high hopes for T3 but I had read reviews that said it wasn't crap. Hence I thought I'd give it a go.

I agree. Too many people went to see the third Matrix film, despite hating the second. No surprise they also disliked the 3rd. It's an attidtudfe that always amazes me... they also tend to be the same people that rail against massmarket consumption of pap over there own refined choices... sweet.

Having just seen it tonight at the cinema, I must say that Dawn of the Dead surprised me by being a pretty good film.

The original is my second favourite horror film of ALL TIME.

Naturally, the re-make sacrilege metre in my head was working overtime as I waited in the cinema, especially after Resident Evil rained on my parade.

But it was… pretty… good, pains me though it does to say that.

More like 28 Day Later USA than a Dawn of the Dead remake, but viewed in isolation it was definitely a cut above the usual crud that gets pushed out under the horror genre.

A very welcome surprise. Here’s hoping Resident Evil Apocalypse will be all right too. :D

There are probably bigger ones than this but one that springs to mind for me was 'Attack Of The Clones'.

By the time of the final battle I found I'd actually enjoyed the film and was looking forward to the next one. This is a feeling that Phantom Menace kept me waiting for...until I realised the credits were rolling.
