I think 'Mainstream' is the term used for people who buy games based on marketing, what's popular and what's based on popular movies etc. Enter the Matrix. Need for Speed Underground. Medal of Honour. Even though in it's genres there are much, much better games, they are overlooked because it hasn't got advertised in every glossy magazine or during every commercial break or because it hasn't got a logo of a popular movie on the front of the box.

But mainly it's an elitist expression used by people who think they know better....

To use the age old film/game comparison, I'd call "Pirates of the Caribbean" a mainstream film. This doesn't mean it is shit. It just means it's popular, well advertised and fits into an easily identifiable genre.

Dunno what you class as mainstream to be honest.

I've been laballed as a casual gamer by a few £337 µ£71m4 p£4¥3r$, but at the end of the day, I guess I am.

I don't play games everyday, when I do it's usually for an hour max, I can only play one game at a time, I never import, and I can't be arsed to collect all those sodding trophies.

Does that mean I only buy mainstream games as well, because I'm a "casual gamer"? Not at all, I seem to only like the games that never sell well, Rez, Jet Set Radio, ICO.

Do you class somebody who only buys mainstream games (usually liscenced stuff, film, sports games, the usual) as a casual gamer? Because that relationship is usually always made.

What the mainstream don't appreciate is the smugness one can get from pretending to like obscure Japanese 2D games and lick-of-paint re-issues of 20 year old gaming franchises.

Neg, it seems that mainstream to you equals stupidity. I would have to say you are wrong there, and that isn't just my opinion just plain fact.

To me mainstream (in reagrds to gaming) refers to games which the average gamer will know about due to several factors be it marketing, a familar franchise etc.

Mainstream does not equal bad, shit or stupid. A fair few "hardcore gamers" could do well to appreciate this fact.

Army Men is a franchise that got savaged by many and yet I'm willing to bet a lot of those critics haven't actually played a single episode in the franchise, but it's fair game for shit throwing as it's a mainstream franchise. I wonder how the Army Man games would fair if they were tarted up in Japanese style graphics. The gameplay stayed the same but changed the look of the game, made it more eastern. I imagine it wouldn't be shit but rather kooky. So kooky only the most hardcore Otaku could appreciate it. If anyone else didn't like it, it just meant they didn't understand it.

Elitism. It's the side of gaming that I hate the most.
