Whats FLCL?

A really weird yet oddly very entertaining Japanese anime series, the plot of which is possbily the hardest thing I can think of to describe. It only has 6 episodes. The music is pretty good and the animation is good. I wouldn't recommend it if you like to be aware of what's going on in the shows you watch though :)

FLCL/Fooly Cooly is aces, I'd heartily recommend it.

Oh, and if you haven't gotten seriously bored by the second half of .Hack//Sign I'll be impressed.

Fruits Basket, on the other hand, is entertaining from start to finish, so good choice there.

I'm busy working my way through Texhnolyze, which so far is bloody great (if difficult to watch... in a good way. And confusing due to bad subtitles, in a not-so good way. Note to self; get legitimate copy when boxset available...). Certainly ABe's darkest work to date, it shares much of the same style as Serial Experiments Lain, though it has far less dialogue, and more reliance on imagery to convey plot, leading to a similarly hard-to-follow storyline. No sleeping through this one, eh :)

Oh, and when I say it's his darkest work, I mean it. It's that which makes it 'difficult to watch', as it has quite a few unpleasant moments.

Oh, and anyone else seen any of Sakigake!! Cromartie High? Reminds me of Sexy Commando Gaiden, sharing as it does the format (short episodes, slightly longer at ~10 minutes) setting (high school) and genre ('odd' humour). I've watched the first six episodes and am certainly enjoying them, and I'd recommend it to anyone else with a taste for strange comedies.

I'm currently watching (in dribs and drabs) Fruits Basket and .Hack/Sign.

Both of which are jolly nice  :)

Fruits Basket is insane genius, quite sweet too.

I just finished watching FLCL(first anime series I've seen) and it was ... very strange, in an entertaining kind of way. I want to see more anime now, but preferrably some less crazy stuff. I have Future Boy Conan so I think I'll watch that next. Is that good? I don't know anything about it apart from the fact that it was done by Miyazaki(and I love his movies).

Sorry if it's already been discussed in this topic, I haven't read it all yet, I'm going to go do so now actually...

Mirai Shounen Conan (aka: Future Boy Conan) is a 26 episode TV series that is loosely based upon Alexander Key's book "The Incredible Tide". It's probably one of the darkest of Miyzaki and Takahata's works, especially considering that it was supposed to be a kids show. In short, it's absolutely bloody amazing stuff and truly classic anime that needs to be watched.

I have watched the series in one sitting (13 hours) several times in the past few years, and it is the only anime that I can be bothered to do that with (the pacing is superb, and it feels more like a massive film than a TV series).

FLCL is also another brilliant anime that rewrote and improved a lot of the banal slapstick I had known to hate. I also love The Pillows, saw them a few times live whilst I was in Japan, and it really adds to the atmosphere.

I also recommend the new Gunbuster, Top o Nerae 2. It's by the same team as FLCL and is just as great/insane.

It's out? ;)

Argh! Need. Fansub. Now.

(PS., that's not a request for links or owt; I'm just despairing as I'm currently living in an area with no broadband and therefore there's no point in me looking for downloads :))

Ok, I'm going to go watch a few episodes of this right now. You've got me quite excited actually, I hope it's as good as you say it is.

I recently watched Grave of the Fireflies for the first time. I cried. :D

Unbelievably good film - no wonder I'd only heard glowing praise for it. More people (especially war-loving adults) should see this film. Hasn't dated at all either.

Sounds good!

Is there any war in it? I'm into that.

Ok, I've watched the first 4 episodes of Future Boy Conan and you're absolutely right Cacophanus , it's fantastic, one of the most enjoyable programs I've watched in a long time , animated or otherwise.I really can't wait to see what happens next. Surprisingly nobody in my Uni course (Japanese) has even heard of it, which is odd considering the involvement of Miyazaki and the fact that there are some pretty dedicated anime fans in the class. Oh well I will force them to watch it when I'm finished, so that I have people to discuss it with.

Also, if this is what is considered to be a childrens anime and stuff like FLCL is aimed at adults, I think I'll be sticking with the kids stuff :)

It is amazing, but it only gets better and better and better and better...

Sounds good!

It's more about the affects of war and it is one of the most profound films I have have ever seen. It also makes me cry (or the whole lump in throat thing, whilst gulping back tears).

Oho, the thread's been ressurected once more.

Right then, I might as well give a brief summation of the anime I've watched since going to uni (entire series/films only, none of my partially watched stuff);

Jubei-Chan the Ninja Girl - a pleasant surprise. Funny, a decent plot and good action scenes. The character design leaves me a bit cold, but other than that it was well worth my time (and money). If you like comedies or sword-fights, you might want to give this a try. 7/10

Tsukikage Ran - like the above, but betterer (making up words is teh fun). The comedy's generally a bit gentler, the character designs are less extreme, while it lacks an overriding storyline its individual plots tend to be interesting and engaging, and the fight-scenes are excellent, if generally short and more 'realistic' than Jubei-Chan's. Definitely worth a purchase, I'd give this 8/10.

Virus - I expected this to be rubbish, but at a tenner for the whole series I couldn't resist. And I was actually pleasantly surprised. The plot is mostly tosh, the character designs are horrific, but it still manages to be vaguely interesting and as a short series it's bearable. The fight scenes, setup and plot reminded me somewhat of Bubblegum Crisis (i.e. it rips it off), which was a good thing. 5/10, but for the price worth it.

Dead Leaves - In a word - kinetic. Never stops for breath, great animation, bizarre storyline, exhilerating action scenes, short. Stylistically similar to FLCL, but sadly lacks the humour of that show, instead relying on gross-out humour. Shares the great action scenes though, and has to be seen just for some of the character designs. Wouldn't spend £20 on it, but well worth it if you see it going for under a tenner. Make sure to watch the extras, particularly the game of 'Doubt' played by some of the staff that worked on it. 7/10

Don't recall watching anything else that I hadn't seen before (I rewatched the Patlabor films and original series, a host of Ghibli films, Azumanga Daioh, Haibane Renmei and Video Girl Ai, all of which remain brilliant), so that's it for now.

fucking Gundam, Mazinger Z is where its at. l love that retro stuff.

The first proper anime I ever did see, I was about 8-9 when I saw it and it was on some dodgy tape at the local Video Drive In along side some ye olde SuperMan and some Unico (they were all on the same tape).

I should have bought it from them, it was gold.

I've been watching SEED Destiny from the beginning again, and I've changed my mind. It's not stellar, but it's not that bad. It's certaintly no "First half of ZZ Gundam" or "All of Evangelion".

I see you're finally starting to see some sense, infidel.

The only anime I've seen of late is Fist of the North Star - a truly brilliant series if ever I saw one. Yes it's silly, yes it's basically the same fight recycled time and time again but godammit, there's something to be said of the build-up to every exploding head, torso or other body part on offer. You get continuity, archs and best of all, a complete lack of pretentiousness - it's meant to entertain, not provoke deep reflective thought.

And unusually, it's the first anime I've seen that has convinced me that dub has a place: the original audio track is rather messy when compared to the dub and its accompanying OST. Sides, I've always been a sucker for drum n' bass ;)

And to think, I wasn't expecting much of it - that'll teach me to listen to the anime snobs.

The bit I never forget from FOTN goes something like this;

"In ten seconds your spine will snap itself in two"

"No, wait! You've got to help me! Nooooooo!"

*snap*

Seems to sum up the entire series rather well, actually ;)

If you like overly violent shows Elfen Lied is a must. Every episode has at least 40 gallons of blood gushing and limbs being thrown all over the place. The first 5 minutes of episode 1 has about 10 decapitations ;)

Click For Spoiler
Later episodes are particularly nasty when you see 10/8 year old kids exploding in a shower of blood. You even their spines for the top half of their body.

And that's the cut version. Can't wait to see the uncut version.

Are you saying that ZZ is actually good?

Well, the second half is bearable. It was very jarring, going from dark-as-you-like war tragedies to Bright chasing chickens, moon ninjas holding colonies hostage and a construction MS being praised as a god.

Azumanga Daioh was one of my favourite things of 2004.

It's just so horribly... nice. God, what happened to my love of killing people...

Chiyo-chan is so fucking cute...I want her detachable bunches!

I watched up to ep 3 and I am planning on buying the next 2 DVD's tomorrow, its that or Xbox Live and Im torn between two!
