The Dreamcast

Not everyone.

I for one think it's bloody awful.

I wouldn't say it's 'awful', but 'best game ever'? You must be having a laugh.

Anyway.

I have to say I don't think the sun shines out of the DC's arse as much as some people here do. It's just nice. Nothing more. In fact for about 18 months, PSO was the only Dreamcast game I played.

It may just be that the games just didn't appeal to me, but I found a lot of them to be vacant and 'soulless'.

And yes- the controller is fucking awful. The D-pad almost blistered my thumb during Tony Hawk's PS 2. And the buttons just don't have enough 'give', which made 'tap-tap-tappity' games like Sports Jam utterly unplayable.

P.S. In reply to whoever said you need an arcade stick to play beat-em-ups properly, I've never had any qualms with the Playstation pad. See Tekken for a particularly good example of that.

P.P.S. Ebisumaru, don't be silly. Alex W. is the King Of Pedants- Sprite is a mere pretender.

2. Samba is an arcade game and might very well be ported to another console or have a superior sequel made in time.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever read on this forum.

You're dismissing a game, suggested as one of the finer points of the Dreamcast's catelogue, because one day something better might come along?

You sit there and wait for tomorrow.

I think the Dreamcast is often over-rated, but only because people want to stress it was better than its success suggested.

It took existing 'hardcore' genres to their logical conclusions (Mars Matrix, Ikaruga, Border Down. Capcom VS SNK 2, Guilty Gear X, Mark Of The Wolves) and even offered some experiences not seen before (Shenmue, Phantasy Star Online). My mind says the Dreamcast is less than the sum of its parts, but when I seperate them, I realise I'm wrong.

As I said before, this thread is utterly pointless, created to court controversy and attract attention. There isn't even a real debate to be had here.

It might have done it's job, but this thread is still pointless. I came to this forum to get away from childish, turgid crap like this.

I got bored of Ico. That aside, I don't know why everyone uses it as some kind of yardstick of amazingness. it was an alright puzzle game with a nice atmosphere.

Played to the first save, thought 'this is gay', put it back on the shelf.

I agree. There's nothing special about the gameplay.

However, the art direction is superb. In my book, that makes it an excellent game (it really is beautiful) - I can't remember the last time I saw something in that genre that stimulated me gameplay wise (no, not even Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of The Time).

Its not posted to court controversy or anything its just that people wrong hold the DC to be the best thing ever for things it didnt do.

Its a discussion to cut through the bull crap like "The PS2 is a non starter, DC is much better and could have competed". In hindsight i'd say its a good thing it did end early as it would have shown up and shamed by the PS2, GC and XBOX. Sega arent nintendo and wouldnt have been able to carry it alone.

look at the bollocks we have to suffer from sega these days. All i ever wanted was for them to live up to their hype, nintendo can do it, why cant sega?

It depends what you look for in a game. There's no objective right and wrong about whether ICO is good or not, but I think it's fair to say the artistic element is original and well handled. For a lot of people this makes a mediocre puzzle/adventure into something 'sublime', for others it does nothing.

"and that's about it really"

That's a good point. I can't remember the last great SEGA games later than Super Monkey Ball, VF4 Evo and Rez. Which is a bit depressing. Can anyone cite some good stuff SEGA has done recently?

Your argument is effectively saying console x is better than console y.

Now tell me that isn't pointless, Gamezville forum standard crap which will have all participants running around in circles to prove their point, only for nobody to listen because they're too pent up and eager to prove their point.

"I fink da PS2 is da best! it as da best graphics and gameplay eva! TrUfax!"

Which in a roundabout sort of way, is what this thread is deteriorating into, though I think we all saw it was inherently going to anyway. Inarticulate or not, regardless of factual content, this is precisely what's going on here, but with bigger words.

Maybe if the subject matter were less contetious and more, I dunno, interesting then it might hold it's own amongst the threads that are actually worth contributing to.
