John Cale - Chinese Envoy

Listened to 'Fragments of a Rainy Season' over the weekend. One of my favourite live albums ever - it's just amazing. The version of Chinese Envoy doesn't dissapoint, but the album has some other beautiful song too - 'I keep a Close Watch' for example.

Yes, and I saw (go me) Cale live on this tour. Amazing.

But nothing can beat the albvum version of "A close watch"...

I saw him years ago (99 I think, and one of my first gigs) just him and a piano in the National Concert Hall in Dublin. It was basically 'Fragments...' live. Brilliant stuff.

There's also "Ben Folds Live", which has some brilliant Live versions of songs. "Tiny Dancer" is a great rendition, totally suits his style. Also "Naked Baby Photos" - lots of unreleased stuff and B sides.

To be the complete completist, "Fear Of Pop" too. Very weird hit-and-miss experimental stuff.

Do you have the cover of "She Don't Use Jelly"? (which is aces)

What about Fair, Kate and Smoke with String sections?

I'm not sure if I have the material from Ben Folds Live but I should probably check it out...

Yessum. She Don't Use Jelly is a fave. I also used to gag at Fannie Packs, but now realise the hilarious piss-takery within. The cover of Raindrops Keep Fallin' on the Burt Bacarach tribute album is genius too.

How could I forget Requiem of the Rings....

An amazing piece of work, based on Clint Mansell's superb main theme from Requiem for a Dream. It's created by a fella who took Mansell's work from the trailer of LotR: TTT and ran away with it. Stunning.

Also: the main theme from Shenmue. Though, like in RotR, there is no singing in it.

I concur. 'Fragments..' is a fantastic live album and is the one that got me interested in his music.

He's got such a haunting voice, tinged with melancholy and laced with the blues.

Ok, this is a bit obscure...

So I saw this documentary on Channel 4 a few months ago, about the Japanese woman who saw the film Fargo, and somehow thought it was real and travelled to America to the real town of Fargo, looking for some buried money, but she died out in the snow and basically the programme maker was trying to find out why by interviewing people.

Anyway.......there was this song that played over the end credits and it was amazing and I really wanted to find it somehow but its like the most obscure tune I've ever heard.

So, did anyone else see it? Can you help me find it on this internet thing?!

I fucking love this thread. thanks to you guys i've found so many great new songs (and a few really tedious ones).

It may be controversial, but i'd also like to nominate Pantera - cemetary gates. I know its metal, but it makes the hairs on my cat stand on end.

Also, for comedy, bonnie tyler - total eclipse of the heart
