watching Platoon last night immediately brought two more to mind.

Smokey robinson - tracks of my tears

And that awesome piece of classical that plays while Elias gets smoked. Can anyone tell me what that is?

I've caved to the charms of pyramid Song by Radiohead. its fekkin bootiful. And i also love the blind melon track. never gave Nico a chance but I think i'll go and dig it out now.

And how the hell did I get through life without Damien Rice?

To the guy who said Elliot. you didnt name a particular song, so i've used Drive on to me from False cathedrals cos I love it.

The most underrated Radiohead single, maybe? It's just got such a weird, ethereal feel to it.

While I'm replying to you here Kerraig, I'd like to say a big thankyou for recommending Sunny Day Real Estate in the past (I'm fairly sure it was you, anyhow..). I'm just listening to Diary and The Rising Tide at the mo; both great, in wildly different ways. Almost thought I was listening to a separate band with Rising Tide.

'Song About and Angel' rocks me hard. HARD!

Jeffery Lewis has a song called ‘The Chelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song’.

It’s about a 5 minute conversation he has with a girl he meets on the street and never sees again. And years later he’s singing this song about her.

The song itself is quite funny but there’s a verse at the end when he sings about how it might seem like he’s a loser singing about this girl and that she’ll never know.

But that at any time even if you don’t realise it someone, somewhere might be singing about you.

It’s lovely, go and get it. You won’t be disappointed.

Steady on now, I think this thread is becoming pretty derailed... I don't hate them by any means, but i'd hesitate to use "The most beautful songs" and "Jamiroquai"/"Out of Space" in the same paragraph, let alone the same sentence.

Or even 'Jamiroquai' and 'good' in the same sentence

Yeah, this is turning from "most beautiful songs" into "post a bunch of songs that you think are quite good".

Magic Carpet Ride is a wicked tune, but 'beautiful'? Not really..

To me, this thread was about tunes that make you stare wistfully off into the middle distance and wonder what past lovers are up to these days.

Check out Bejing (Too Many People) from Song In The Air. In fact the whole album is simply stunning.

I'll bung in Coldplay - Clocks into my little compilation. Not only is it wonderful, but it conjures up the best and worst emotions in me. It's very odd feeling the memory of supreme elation (after seeing them play it on my first ever night of Glasto) and melancholic regret (Letting someone very very special slip out of my life) all from one song.

Blood On The Motorway by DJ Shadow, Smoke & Mirrors by Rjd2 and a whole bunch of Eels stuff.

Spot on there, especially the Eels, Flower being my personal fave. I got the Bridge of Khaza Dun off the LOTR soundtrack for the last minute and a half (when Gandalf dies :)).

Ennio Morricone "As A Judgement" blows me away as well but that's partly because it's tied to the ending of one of my all time favourite films.

Johnny Cash - Hurt

A cover of the nine inch nails song. I heard the song for the first time when I saw the music video, done just before he died and after his wife did, the song perfectly captures the feeling of an old man looking back on his life with sadness, regret, melancholy... Even if the song is originally about drugs

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Songs don't get more beautiful than this... An infinitely superior cover of the original Leonard Cohen song, this features only Jeff Buckley's unique golden voice and a guitar, to listen to at night, lights dimmed in absolute quiet for guaranteed spine tingling moments. All credit due to the poet Leonard Cohen for the amazing lyrics though.

If you haven't heard these before get them! I guarantee you will thank me for it, if you hve to get any two songs out of this entire thread make it these two. Honestly, if anyone tells me they don't like these songs my respect for them automatically diminishes :) Music is subjective but you just can't not like such emotional songs as these...

I really really dont like Hallejluhah. Cheesy rubbish.

Aside from that, both these songs have been lsited in this thread many many times, and there are much better songs listed. I think you need to read this thread more than anyone else.

Songs can be really personal things but I'll just add a random few to the mix, hope there aren't too many repeats.

Wicked Game - Chris Izaak

Seasons in the sun - Terry Jacks

Fake plastic trees - Radiohead (I never really understood til I heard it live)

Sand Dunes - Groove Armada ( It's summer motherfuckers!)

Emergency 72 - Turin Brakes (all my lust comes down to dust)

Exit music for a film - Radiohead (maybe this was already mentioned?)

Daydream in blue - I monster (well, I like it)

Run - Snow Patrol (may be a little recent for some)

blink-182 - I miss you (oooh, controversy)

love will tear us apart - Joy Division (yay, tuneless singing can be cool)

Fight Test - Flaming Lips

The Scientist - Coldplay

destiny - zero 7

I know they've been mentioned. The more the better :D I'm sure there are "much better" beautiful songs but these are mine of the moment.

I don't think Turin Brakes has been mentioned often enough in this thread, a stunning, stunning band. Full of Stars, Long Distance, Ether song, the entire first album get played regularly. I mean just to start off the album you've got Feeling Oblivion :D

You really do have a point there, I didn't want to OD this thread on the brakes but it is a fantastic debut album. It's my musical ICO, I think I experienced them around the same time too.
