Steel Battalion: LOC

Distinct muttering

Recommended Posts

This is prompted by the review in GamesTM which basically marks this game down to a 4 on the basis that its virtually unplayable online.

Now I was very close to getting this game, and have read nothing but glowing reports on this folder. however if everyone could state any problems or experiences they have had while playing online I would appreicate it. Just trying to geta feel as to wether I would have problems with my connection.

Not a discussion of the review score as such in GamesTM though please.

I`d ignore the review and just get it.

So far Ive played about 40+ battles and only got disconnected twice. (and that was because there were people playing from Japan). Its a fantastic Online game and frankly the negative comments about it being unplayable just baffle me

The games supposed to support 5v5 (this doesnt work well at all) but If you stick to games of 3v3 (especially against people from the forum) I guarantee you`ll love it.

At the (PAL) start there were a lot of connection issues. After a week or so these mostly subsided, although some minor connection problems do appear now and then.

However if you have a poor connection with low upload or are playing people with these poor connections, the game will have major lag and/or disconects.

I think the game is fantastic but someone with a poor upload might certainly agree with GamesTM.

had maybe four connection errors in almost a month of play. had a few really laggy games, and there are laggy moments, but on the whole not a problem. 4v4 can work, especially if you're all in the uk. and in free mission it doesn't matter if you get a connection error, because you don't loose your tank.

None here either, apart from the Eastenders gag (4/10). Thing is though, the main campaign isn't even that in-depth with one round out the way, things will just continue like before. Almost like a more enhanced free battle, more than anything.

The review in that mag is pathetic really. I can't comment on their connection, but given Darran's comments about certain other titles then I'd imagine he's just shit at working network stuff out  I can't understand the backlash at all. Sour grapes methinks, says buckets for the integrity of the mag.

edit: oh, free mission is nice and stable too; i've been in a few more 5vs5 matches too, although with random people (2nd. gen only, what's that I see? A Quasar... fuckers).

Yeah, SB:LOC has been nothing short of a brilliant experience for me but if you have a less than impressive down and especially upload rate it is close to unplayable I guess. Then again, if you can afford the game you should have the money for a decent connection .

Too be fair , there are also some problems concerning the economy system/balance, waiting time for rooms to fill up and the built quality of the new controllers. Nothing to spoil my intense enjoyment of the game though.

What would the sour grapes be about?

Stryder said in a topic in Discussion they would review the score when the online problems had been fixed.

But its not gonna though, especially when there isn't a problem. Capcom vs. SNK wasn't re-marked, even after the patch (for example). He's just sore that he can't play the game properly because of an apparent problem that very few have experienced, one that he can't do anything about.

To be fair Magic L0rd just saying only a few people are having a problem doesn't make it true.

Even after I got it working properly I know a lot of people who couldn't. I didn't really feel the game after I gave it a fair go anyways, I couldn't get into it. so tis gone, gone, gone.

I know that, dummy ;) Works the other way around too, see?

edit: still seems ridiculous to review the game though innit 'cos EVERY online game could technically be enhanced (or even vice versa... ). 2/10 for this, later patched becomes instantly brill. so, it's suddenly a good game now? let's print that up then, retract what we said before. doesn't work too well in printed media.

fuckin' double standards or what.

oh, and it seems like only you have a problem, trev ;)

Mad thing is if you read the review in GamesTM it has massive praise for it. I must admit I did fear for it when I read the reports of connection problems because I have a standard 512mb pipex connection but excellently had few problems. 85% of the time its ace and when its ace it can be the best live game so far.. but you really have to be into it to appreciate it, (ie love the warfare tactics, weapons and equipment)

I think its a different point if you don't get on with the actually game tho.. but if reason for not getting on with it was brought on by tech problems thats a shame. I do think Capcom could of done a better job and I'm surprised there hasn't been more coverage about it..

*fingers crossed* I'll continue to have amazin' games on the virtual battlefield..

quite a good session there last night, even if we lost as many as we won. the opposition was definately more than worthy. nothing like driving around a city blowing up buildings while dodging shots from those behind, who are trying stop you. that and charging over a bridge that's sustaining heavy artillery fire.

Yeah good games kiwi, I liked just rushing the bridge in the hope of breaking through the enemy. I am a "master of hit and run tactics" after all
