Zelda: The Wind Waker

Its probably the biggest pile of wank Nintendo have pulled out with since Yoshi's story. How did they mess it up so badly. After the semi-messup that was OOT they made a comeback with Majora's Mask... and then fucked it up with TWW.

Miyamoto should be relived of artistic control of this series before he destroys. Get rid of toon shading, shit dungeons and a bias towards small game worlds and lots of wank mini-games and bring back LTTP and AW style large land masses and devious dungeons.

Cant wait for Four Swords :(

Oh, dear. Not a happy bunny.

I loved the cel shading, the dungeons, the stylings. A nice radical change to the Zelda series which paid off. Sounds like the bitter tears of someone who wanted realistic Zelda like in the Gamecube tech demo.

Exactly. Although it was hardly innovative (but let's face it everyone, Ocarina of Time was hardly innovative in terms of gameplay now was it?), it was stylishly executed, absolutely gorgeous and absolutely solid. To say it's bad is one of the worst lapses of judgement I've ever seen, it's stunning. And although it may not be as stunning as previous Zelda incarnations that doesn't stop it being better than 99% of the games on the market.

I could forgive the cel shading if the game lived up to its heritage.

Sadly nintendo sold out to the kids. I hate to say it but TWW was made for kiddies rather than everyone :(

Makes me sad and fear for the series.

Loved it. Not without its problems that's for sure (too easy and the last part dragged a little), but other than that it was magical. Nobody else comes close to making games like this IMHO.

How old are you kamrantaz? The only people I've ever complain about games being "for kiddies" are kiddies themselves (mostly 13-15 year olds).

true it is better than most adventures BUT this is zelda. Its held by different standards. The same as any other nintendo game. When held next to its peers, it sadly falls far short even compared to the 10 year old links awakening.

I thought 4 swords DID have a story. To be fair though WW re-used too much stuff to palette at times. How many times can you be excited/suprised by collecting a hookshot?

Link's Awakening is STILL the best Zelda of them all.

Pfft, remind me not to trust your opinion again :(

im 23 and a hardcore zelda zealot.

and TWW is an abonination to the series.

I just don't get it I'm afraid. I'll be the first one to agree that TWW had some problems, but still thought it was a marvellous game. I much prefer the graphics of it to any other 3D Zelda game for example, the cell shaded look was fantastic IMHO. Could have done with a few more dungeons and a little less fishing for treasure chests, but an "abomination"? No.

My point exactly.

Agreed. Adored the ending too. Like a lush mono-mini movie playing on my Gameboy.

I disagree with the "abomination of the series" tag of Wind Waker. Zelda for kids? Er, isn't that the idea? :(

Good lord, you're the only person to ever agree with me on that. I :( you now.

Just finished playing Links Awakening. Although it is very good, I personally think Majora's Mask is the best of the series.

As for Wind Waker, I thought it was truly a magical experience from a visual point of view but found it slightly too easy. Having said that, the older Zelda's like LttP and Links Awakening are veering too much to the difficult side.

I think if someone had never played a Zelda before, then Wind Waker would be the best place to start.

what?

cartoon means kids?

Rubbish.

There's a great evocative air about wind waker brought about in chief by the graphical style that majora and ocarina don't really have. Zelda has always been about the adventures of a boy in a big scray world, and what better way to convey that than with a boy's perspective style.

I'm enjoying it loads anyway. I just wish it had voices in it rather than text-reading. That's the only major av flaw in the game when everything else is so lush. I know it probably makes translation and stuff easier, but I'd even be happy with foreign language voices and English subtitles.

Remember the pain of that dungeon where you had to destroy pillars with a big stone ball? Evilness, but I got through it in the end...

Wind Waker has a universal appeal - everyone watches cartoons, right? So, Wind Waker will be attractive for many people, not just kids. D'oh.

I love it. The style is absolutely gorgeous. The lushness of the game world is stunning. I love the game*

It's the first 3D Zelda I've played, and I have LTTP for the GBA but haven't really 'got it' so far.

*Disclaimer - however I'm now at the bit I have to find the you-know-whats and it may be in danger of spoiling the game.

!!!

Opinion... INVALID!

Honestly, if you live in a world where OOT was a "semi-messup" (you remember, OOT, The Best Game Ever ?), then anything else you say is going to be regarded with extreme disbelief.

Wind Waker wasn't wank, it was only slightly disappointing, but still fantastic. It's also the best looking game ever, and if you don't agree, you've clearly not in posessesion of a pair of eyes, TRUFAX.

Actually, on replay, I now believe that Rogue Leader may equal Wind Waker in the most fantabulous graphics ever sense. It can win for serious graphics, but the emotion carried in the characters in WW tips the iceberg slightly. Especially when you leave home for the first time.

No. Wind Waker is awesome. Ok I don't feel like I’m playing OT, but aren't all sequels like so? I'm not an RPG fan btw, but I can relate to and play Zelda. If you want huge maps, ridiculous item slots, crazy poisons and potions go play FFS, BG or any other 'proper' rpg. Toon shading? Is there something inherently bad with this? Surely, if it works then it belongs there. And boy does it work. Surfing the sees for example, would need twice the amount of graphics for the same effect a vibrant cell-shaded wave creates. Despite your unexplainable distaste to cell-shaded graphics it works in WW.

Although it was hardly innovative (but let's face it everyone, Ocarina of Time was hardly innovative in terms of gamely now was it?), it was stylishly executed, absolutely gorgeous and absolutely solid. Again, i don't and haven't played many rpgs (apart from Zelda:OT & WW), but the combat mode game mechanic shown in both titles is the first I’ve come across in any game. Sailing the red lion and riding the horse (name anyone?) in OT was atmospheric. This isn’t due to 'stylish execution' rather a successful game mechanic that entices the player into the virtual environment.

I'm also 23 though I'm less of a hardcore Zelda zealot.

And TWW is a refreshing return to the form so well executed in LTTP and Link's Awakening, after the murky N64 incarnations.

The N64 versions are the abominations, bearing little in common with past Zelda games. TWW takes Zelda back to the kind of loveliness that I so enjoyed on the SNES and GBA, and (less so) on the NES. Importantly, it was the first Zelda game that looked like Zelda since Link's Awakening (the two Capcom ones aside).
