Buying 18 rated games for the under aged.

Hello Goaty ♥

I think it also comes down to the tone of the film as well. Gladiator is a historical epic. Bloody and brutal, but I would not say gory - there's a difference in my mind.

Kill Bill is just exploitative on many levels - Tarantino explicitly set out to make it that way. Language, violence, morals (the aborted rape of the catatonic Bride in the hospital bed for instance) - it's not the same as Gladiator on so many levels.

Apologies for intruding here, but I am also interested in a suitable answer to PeteBrant's question. I can accept the argument for the first part of Kill Bill, but what about the second part, which is also rated 18, and which is less heavy, content-wise, than the first part? How does that compare to Gladiator? (Does the fact that Russell Crowe appears in the latter make any difference?)

Haven't seen part 2 so can't comment. Sorry.

So, I'm the only person who acted out kung fu films with my mates after we had watched a couple? I kicked one of 'em in the nuts by accident. If that's not impressionable, I'd like to know what is...

Me and my mate used to ride round on our Raleigh Grifters and pretend we were CHiPs. I was always John as I never liked Ponch.

Of course it is - But the average episode of "Dragonball Z" or "Ultimate muscle" (both toonami) could easily lend itself the same reenactment.

Christ, as a videogaming kid you could be equally influenced by "Street fighter" as you could "enter the dragon" (which, of course, had the full nunchucka scene edited to protect our fragile little minds)

Well, look, it's up to you what you do. You say, 'as a parent', and sure, I'm not a parent, I'm not, but I was a kid once, so I can say, 'as a kid'. And kids I knew who were little cunts probably because they had free reign to see and do what the hell they wanted to. It's not censorship, it's being able to comprehend what you're watching, surely?

...Am I still a bastard?

In my opinion, no. The way I see it, it's the tyke and his family's fault completely: he started it by breaking the rule of "not talking to strangers" --who knows what was happening already in that demented mind of his? If you hadn't intervened and aided and abetted him in his unlawful, unethical, and simply disgusting behavior, who knows what might have happened next? Theft, larceny, rape, rioting...

As I take it, you are the hero of this story. I nominate The Goat Keeper for forum member of the month.

Me and my mates used to play (or rather "act out") Streetfighter 2 when we were younger.

Luckily, none of us could do a hundred hand slap or someone might have got seriously hurt.

Gamestation employees can get huge fines and sacking for selling BBFC stuff to kids. So they did their job. Also they wont care about what you said as your one in a constant line of abusive customers. You seem proud. Strange man.

One of the reasons I don't play any fighting games and aren't good at any is due to the fact that my mother never let me play them as a kid (fighters, wrestling games = too violent according to her). I try to get my brothers to experience the likes of Street Fighter, Tekken, and Soul Caliber etc whenever I can as it’s a sad story. I think fighters are one of the most technically demanding genres out there.

'18' rated titles are a completely different matter. For example, I wouldn't want to see my eight year old brother playing any GTA title.

There was only one person in this situation with a job to do or any responsibility to discharge, and that's the guy behind the counter. If he thought that he was doing something he shouldn't (selling the game to a minor, by proxy), he shouldn't have made the sale. If he knew that no law was being broken by an adult buying the game obviously for a kid, then he should have kept his big nose out of other people's business.

He should not have gone mad at Goaty under any circumstances, and deserves to be called a twat for that. He might have politely pointed out the game wasn't suitable for a minor, and left it at that. Or politely refused the sale.

If Goaty doesn't think the title is unsuitable for minors then he hasn't done anything wrong. Beyond that its the job of the parents to check what the kid is upto.

I'm genuinely shocked by the number of people saying 'it got an 18 certificate for a reason'. It sounds like members of a jury saying 'well the police wouldn't have arrested him if he didn't do it'. Do you really all believe in 'the powers that be' so unconditionally that you accept every bit of censorship, every law passed in the country as correct simply becuase those in power decided it should be so? This country has a long and shameful history of shocking censorship which has (I believe) done tremendous damage to our culture. As a parent, and a British citizen, I wouldn't accept a single certificate issued by the BBFC or whoever rate games as worth my consideration.

If he didn't posess the amount of teenage swagger required to waltz up to the counter and try to buy it himself then, chances are, he was far too young. Any kid too timid to risk getting a telling off from a game shop employee might get quite scared by an 18 rated game.

If he'd been knocked back at the counter he would have learned a lesson in dealing with failure and rejection. Chances are he would have tried it on somewhere else until he got hold of the game. The kid would have learned a valuable lesson in perserverance by doing so. If the kid's going to do something that is legally and morally dubious he might as well learn some other values to balance things out.
