GoldenEye: Rogue Agent

oh i thought that despite the name this game might make sense as it could be set back in the old days but apparantly Onnatop is in it so bang goes that theory.

they should've just called it 007 Villians Megamix Deluxe instead of trying to find a very lame way in linking it to a well respected game in an effort to increase sales.

The actual gameplay elements sound ok, but why do they need to drag the GoldenEye name through the mud? (stupid question I know)

Goldeneye is a Bond movie franchise primarily, not a video game. Yes it happened to be strapped to a particularly excellent game, but so have many franchises over the years.

Rocky, Alien Vs Predator, Terminator, Star Wars, Formula 1, to name but a few.

Everybody that cared about Goldeneye knows that it carried on with Perfect Dark and that the EA games aren't part of the Rare FPS line-up.

I bet Free Radical Design are either laughing at this sad attempt or crying because it is ruining the name of one of the best FPS titles ever made. Either way, given the track record that EA has with the James Bond license, I'll be giving it a miss.

Yes, Goldeneye was a good game.  No, I don't think that everyone who has a PS2 has heard of it.

I think you are right. It's a total coincidence they called the new game Goldeneye. It's obviously because the movie was so successful it's got nothing to do with that old N64 game.

When is GoldenEye : Rouge Agent out?

31st December, 2004

The last of that news link is true though.

If you pretend it isn't called GoldenEye, and pretend you aren't terrified that EA will produce another marketing driven shoot-'em-up, the idea of playing an aspiring henchman is actually quite neat.

I just don't envisage EA knocking out anything more than the turgid shite they've knocked out with the Bond licence so far.

I don't think the N64 game is quite so sidelined in the minds of the gaming masses - I used to play 4 player Goldeneye with people who were not gamers - they loved it so much we'd play it every other day.

I think Goldeneye is more synonymous with excellence than some people might agree. Even if EA had not meant to link the game with the Rare N64 title, why the heck are they in fact doing it? There's no way someone sitting in a marketing room came up with the idea "Yea, he's a henchman who has his EYE removed and replaced with a GOLD one! But what could we call it???" ;)

So you people don't think it's called Goldeneye because it links in with the Goldeneye story at all?

This press release tells you the entire plot of the game from start to finish does it?

Well it doesn't. The fact that Onatopp is in there would suggest that the story does link in with Goldeneye. Just don't be surprised that EA haven't told us the entire plot in this press release. That would kinda ruin the game, don't you think?

I terms of how well-known the Bond films are, Goldeneye doesn't exactly sit up there at the top does it? Well, nearer the top than some (I mean it was the first proper 'revitalisation' of the franchise, for better or for worse) but it would be far more sensible to release a game of a newer, more well-known Bond film to ensure success wouldn't you think? This leads me to the only logical conclusion that EA are using the success of the game (Goldeneye) and not the film to ensure more sales amongst us gamers. Though it's most likely a combination of both.

And yes, I really do think the Goldeneye name (as a game) is known very widely amongst most gamers.

i don't understand why they're even linking it with goldeneye if it's got nothing to do with it? are they hoping it'll generate more interest cos of rare's game? that's a stupid move if you ask me.

The idea apparently is that Goldfinger is locked in a war with Dr. No for control of a massive criminal organisation (we can guess which), and that your aspiring henchman gets to rise through the ranks, customising and upgrading his villainous abilities along the way, and fighting alongside or battling against various Bond characters including the aforementioned Ms. Onatopp, bowler-hat-chucking Oddjob, Scaramanga (he of the Golden Gun fame), Pussy Galore, and of course Goldfinger himself.

Obviously links in with GoldenEye a lot. After all, GoldenEye was about rising to the top of a massive criminal organisation. ;)

There are three Goldfinger characters in there to one GoldenEye character. You expect us to just accept that the cast of Goldfinger will just happen to fit into the GlodenEye storyline somehow? Kudos if they pull it of, but I ain't holding my breath.
