Songs that nail you

"Not if you were the last junkie on earth", Dandy Warhols. I was wankered in the Garage in Islington when I just became aware of this song. Four chord melody, even in my state I was smiling at the lyrics. Instant classic, immediately engrained in my head forever & still one of the greatest singles ever IMO.

Some more:

Running down the way up - BT

Man on the Moon - REM

Popcorn - Hot Butter

Other songs have done the same, but it leapt into my mind when I tried to think of a comparison to "So I walked into somewhere and..."

More recently, I heard all the fuss regarding Hey Ya. I don't listen to the charts so hadn't heard it. Regardless, I was planning on buying the album anyway (Bombs over Baghdad introduced me to Outkast... fucking great song) so when I got it home and specifically played that tune just so I could hear what the fuss was about.

Oh. My God.

Surely when hearing new material from an artist you've heard before (and liked) will often result on you liking it upon first listen surely?

anyhoo:

ooh wee - mark ronson

toxic - britney spears

crazy in love - beyonce

You lot are going to hate this, but hey...

'Sound of the Underground' - Girls Aloud.

Hear me out.

I was in Australia during the whole Popstars Rivals thing, so didn't have a clue what this was about. Cue this tune playing on one of Sydney's fine radio stations on a sunny day, and as soon as that guitar kicked in at the start, i was hooked.

Fucking amazing. Possibly the dirtiest, sexiest, rock-and-rolling-est pop song of the last ten years. The sonic equivilent of being punched in the head. I love it.

God yeah. Still remember that one well.

I'll add Pulp's This is Hardcore. I was driving at the time, and when the song reaches it's pornographic peak I almost crashed the car. Amazing.

The guitar on A Little Soul.

The guitar solo descending towards hell on Battery In Your Leg (Blur).

Love Is Hell - Ryan Adams.

But This Is Hardcore has just been added to my playlist... years since I've listened to it...

Foo Fighters: Everlong

First time I heard it it sent a shiver up my spine. Still sends a shiver up my spine every time I hear it. Beautiful yet powerful love song. Very special song for me from a great album that got me through 19th and 20th year on this planet.

Drunkship of Lanterns - The Mars Volta

Incredible live too, goes on for about half an hour. Bit jazz wank but when it breaks down, Amazing.

The first Slayer tune I ever heard knocked me back in my seat too - Angel of Death. Never heard anything that extreme before. I love hearing stuff that's unlike anything I've ever heard - Knifehandchop is the latest culprit, fantastic.

'Sunny Afternoon' by The Kinks

You lot are going to hate this, but hey...

'Sound of the Underground' - Girls Aloud.

I always found it amusing that a group like Girls Aloud would release a song called 'Sound of the Underground'. That seems to me to be not unlike Posh Spice doing a song called 'From the Ghetto'.

When I first heard 'Toxicity' by SOAD, I thought it was just about the best thing ever. Despite its MTV2 whoreathon over the past 2 years, it's still brilliant.

I also remember listening to 'Champagne Supernova' by Oasis when Morning Glory was first released. It was just aces, and finished off an amazing album perfectly.

Stormy In The North by The Wildhearts. It hit me like a cannon, and gave me a lingering hard on.

Yeah, that intro just rocks your socks. Seeing them on Tuesday!

Anyway, Less Than Jake: All My Friends Are Metalheads is just impossible to dislike*

Chop Suey by SOAD

Stickin in my Eye by NOFX, who I saw last night at Brixton.

*I'm sure someone will prove me wrong though :o

Brown Paper Bag - Roni Size

Heard it on Gilles Petersen's show when he was still on GLR ( I think), it was like the music I'd waited my whole life to hear - then I saw live at the Jazz Cafe and I'm still buzzing 6 years later.....

Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode was another one, a band I'd always thought just 'OK' come out with this enormous glitterband hands in the air stomper - loved 'em ever since
