Well, its all a bit fancy, isn't it? Doubtless this is the sort of thing the PC FPS crowd get all the time, and its a genre I know nothing about, but I've enjoyed the first hour or two. Graphics are great, the actors are modelled really well and its full of atmosphere, like "Oz" in the future or alien 3. First person hand to hand works OK, and there's a nice shift into 3rd person for any ladder climbing or rail hanging. I really liked the way the training mission was handled, and then the credit sequence. It's all lovingly done.

I know we're supposed to go all out for innovative gameplay on here, but when a generic game like this or Manhunt has such style and such great visuals, modern gaming is not all bad. Not bad at all.

But yeah, just started playing this tonight (I was saving it till post exams, so it was a special treat :( )

Graphics - lovely. As someone mentioned, actually very low res if you stop to look at the textures, but the bump mapping etc hides it very nicely. Character models in particular are excellent. I imagine the Xbox Doom 3 will look very similar to this.

Gameplay seems very solid. Nice stealth/action variation, and its refreshing that there are no real penalties for getting caught - you can always just blast/punch your way out. Theres nothing more frustrating than an action game trying to implement a stealth section and then killing you as soon as you get caught. Sounds are fantastic - nice meaty gun effects for once, and incredible voice talent as everyone has surely noted.

The actual storyline seems a bit rushed though. It did a bit of a Half Life - after a slow start it just suddenly dropped you in it. I could accept that in HL, but running through a supposedly 'Triple Max' prison without any alarms going off seemed a bit odd. Also, the eye shining/PapaJohn bit - what exactly was going on?? Admittedly the sound on the cutscenes was a bit low so I didn't grasp everything that was said, but in general the story elements could do with some fleshing out. But hey - its an FPS movie licence - we're lucky we got any story at all! :D

Stopping for now to play Full Spectrum Warrior - will definately get back to it tomorrow though.

I've just finished this and I'm a bit meh. It's about 10% BRILLIANT ideas and 90% really derivitive mong-headed design. Stupid and needless amounts of running about for no good reason, vague controls, intrusive auto aim and a general lack of direction for large parts of the game.

The graphics are quite possibly the best I've ever seen on a console. As has been said a million times, it's Doom 3, innit? I really wonder if Halo 2 will look as good.

I'd like to have seen considerably more fully armed Riddick doing his own thing and far less forced corridor wandering. It could have been amazing, certain moments were stunning and I let out little squeals and everything. There's just far too much filler.

Got it today, and I've played it for an hour or so and I'm very impressed thus far. Putting aside the fabulous atmosphere (that dead man walking scene when the game starts 'proper' was brilliant) the graphics are quite literally unbelieveable. I thought I'd pretty much seen everything a console could offer this generation so I'm eating a little humble here. It's a little glitchy, but still stunning.

Cool.

Finished it yesterday and I felt I had just seen a good action movie. Where you think it was over and yet it still wasn’t.

It plays very well, it looks ace (apart from the jaggies) and the voice acting is actually good. Atmosphere is really good. The walking around bits can be annoying, as is the stealth part. And you get the idea you don’t know where you are going although you do go in the right direction.

Albeit the length of the game, its short, it was a pretty satisfying journey. ;)

Hmm, has anyone had any trouble getting this onto their Xbox?

I'm being told that there is a directory name which is too long, which is a bit of a shitter.

Do you mean, copying the game onto the HDD? If so, that'll be a shame, as I've got all 18 of my games on my Xbox.

right I just got as bit past mainframe section in prison.

The grphics are absolutley sublime. But the game really doesnt seem that good. Its a corridor shooter and thats all, hopefully it will improve.

Cool.

That's what I was gonna write.

Love the false opening and then the walk into the cells. Cracking! Also like being able to turn someone's gun on them and shoot their head off.

Nice.

Has anyone watched the training video. "Press the right trigger when dragging a body to throw them. Now that's fucking cool." Made me laugh quite a bit.

"or just use a knife and stab the prick".

All games should have a video tutorial, I've decided. Ace.

Also, have you been picking up the ciggies? There are movies of early prototypes of the game in action. I'm amazed the game ever got made, truly shocking.

Oh, and I've just got into the sewers against *those* creatues. The Doom folk must be shitting themselves if they've played this.

I've been doing a lot of body tossing myself. I even killed the sick inmates in the infirmary and threw them around trying to land them nicely back on the beds. I'm *THIS* close to landing a body sat upright on a toilet as well.

Physics will restore my faith in gaming.

I'd like to mention that this game was pretty much directly responsible for giving me nightmares last night. Spoilers:

The bit in the mines (with the.. things) left me really uncomfortable and edgy. As with the bit in the pit, I just wanted OUT of there. Standard gaming fodder, I know, but very well executed; especially trying to switch between the 2 vision types to compensate for the light levels.

I have just got to the work pass section after having a fight with the bad ass gaurd carrying a bat. Anyone know how much more is left as i don't want to play it all in a two days? I would rather spread it out to last over the weekend.

Like Clive said, the 'Dead Man Walking' credits sequence was a fucking spectacular way to start the game.

Yep, for me it pips Half Life's opening (from which it clearly borrowed the idea from) in setting the tone for the game.

It kind of sums the game up for me at the moment, loads of atmospheric touches and quality craftmanship make it an enjoyable experience, despite it being slightly derivative.

It does loads of things right, and a few things wrong, but you're willing to overlook it's occasional glitching and sometimes clumsy control system because of all the other cool stuff that happens in it.

It does bring some reasonably new stuff to the table as well, like the jump from first to third person when context sensitive actions are carried out. This makes things like ladder climbing a lot easier than most FPS games, and isn't nearly as jarring as you'd imagine.

The sewer though.... evil.. evil.

Has anyone mentioned the graphics yet?

That, and the fact that you can see your own legs and arms in 1st person mode.

In fact, for me, it doesn't really feel like a FPS.

And you've got to laugh at the graffiti.

I just tried out the demo, And it made me feel sick.I haven't played a FPS game in ages that has given me motion sickness.I didn't stick it for too long and i already need to lie down.

I'm not sure wether it was the dodgy framerate in the demo or wether it it was the weird way it moved.I don't like the zooming in and out when crouching.

It seemed pretty good as well.

Not to take anything away from this game, but Project IGI did that years ago.

Still a fab game though, in fact I'm scared to go back to it because I know if I do it'll be over before I know it.
