Miyamoto to resign

C+VG made me laugh this morning however, saying they had coined the phrase `Segaton` when I`d read it a day later from a forum on their pages.

Segaton dates back to the merger rumours, surely? Whichever - it's unlikely CVG made it up given all their news is a repeat from other sites.

Problem with Spong is that, unlike the rest of the internet's news sites, they have very little but unsubstantiated rumours on their pages. When was the last time anyone visited them for a review?

.::: They do reviews? :lol:

The idea alone is scary... :)

His stance of why Grand Theft Auto would bomb in Japan showed how out of touch he was. His inability to see the game for the achievement it is is telling of his 'old world' viewpoint.

But he was right, it did bomb for such a lauded game in the west, (to the best of my knowledge,) and he's never talked publicly over his opinion of the game per se, and just as little on his views over 'mature' software in general. (His shortsighted contempt for Rare excepted.)

Hmm... I would hardly call a game that was among the Top 30 best-selling games in Japan of last year a bomb...

The man is a legend, probably the most recognized person in gaming itself (apart from Bill Gates, who doesn't count). So Mario Sunshine isn't as revolutionary a game as Mario 64 - it's still better than 95% of all other platformers out there, and his output is consistently quality unlike that of other developers. The gents at THQ and Acclaim spring to mind. There's a fair chance that a lot of you will have grown up playing Mario Bros, so why the backlash at the man that brought a hefty amount of people into playing games? His early innovations have practically made gaming what it is today.

he's right you know. Mayayaymoto ain't done shit since mario64.
Obviously Miyamoto is not shit. But he IS the past.

He has slipped into standing for what games were and not understanding what they are now.

We all love his classics but it's time for the old man to go to bed.

His hold over Nintendo is stifling the company's younger, hungrier and contemporary-market savvy youngesters.

Miyamoto, we love you! But please, for the love of God, fuck off.

etc.

Seems like backlash to me.

Personally I cannot see that happening as Miyamoto is clearly dedicated to Nintendo, if he went what would Nintendo do for originality?. As mentioned, upon first seeing Mario 64 I immediately thought that the N64 was a serious piece of kit, and with titles such as Goldeneye, Lylat Wars and Blast Corp (not forgetting Pilotwings 64) I seemed correct, at the time at least!.

This quote from the round table meeting with Miyamoto and co last night gives evidence of where spong heard its rumors apparently they came from japan first!

Shigeru Miyamoto: Good evening. I'll be speaking Japanese tonight. [laughs]. I would like to thank so many of you for joining us here tonight. Mostly we're going to be talking about the Nintendo DS and the new Zelda game. But first there's something I'd like to clear up. I've heard that some of you have heard that my heart is doing so well these days. Is there a rumor going around? [Laughs] There are rumors going around that I've actually quit Nintendo? At least, that's the rumor going on over in Japan right now. [laughs] At the hotel yesterday I had a good kilometer swim, and my heart's doing fine, so you don't need to worry.

Cheers

All I am saying is that he was brilliant and his influence of games is still great. But now he is holding Nintendo back with his out of date vision of what a game should be.

Interesting. Can you tell me your vision about what games should be like these days and how Miyamoto's vision is outdated in today's industry?

Backlash? hardly. All I am saying is that he was brilliant and his influence of games is still great. But now he is holding Nintendo back with his out of date vision of what a game should be.

I like him and think there is a place for him, but that place is not right at the front of the company - not by a long way.

Just because he used to produce brilliant games doesn't mean that he has carte blanche to do as he pleases now that the industry has moved on. And it has moved on.

Yeah, Nintendo should be making GTA clones!

I would agree with the "phasing out" view. As we can see with Zelda, Nintendo seem to be trying to get other directors/producers to make the games while under his direction, so in future they can hopefully carry on with those series' unaided and also branch out with their own ideas.
