Well considering it uses the same type of battery as the iPod and how wasn't there a scare about that?

I realise that they will probably have an interchangeable battery but how much will it cost?

And here's another question will Sony go down the Nintendo route and have games that must be played in unison with their PSP??

Video is stated as 2.5hours because of constant disk access - Games will have longer than that - they do not stream constantly - Expect somewhere in the middle - 4-6 hours.

EDIT: What el croux said

Battery life is king.

Poor battery life killed the chances of the Game Gear and the Lynx, despite them being technically superior to the Game Boy.

If Sony want to steal a massive chunk of this market then they need to listen to the consumer and brush up on some recent history.

8 - 10 hours for gameplay, similar to other portable gaming devices, 10 hours for audio, similar to portable music devices and 2.5 hours for video, similar to portable DVD players.

Don't processors use power? And, while we're at it, Screens?

I don't see how something that says it has 10 hours of life doing something as menial as playing music has the battery capacity to allow people to play games for almost the same amount of time. Not even close.

but, there seems, there are too many different takes on the same small piece of information, so maybe somehtintg's off.

That's what I was thinking also.

Unless people just buy it like they did with the PS2...no doubt there will be a release date and then they will accidentally not have enough units thus driving the media AND parents crazy with them paying mad money to get their hands on one for their greedy children.

Before the original Playstation was released `recent history` showed that Nintendo was king.

Look what happened.

I don't think I'll be buying one though as not only is the battery life too short for me (if these estimations are correct), but I use my SP only on the occasional basis as it is.

My other worry is the size. The machine looks huge - Game Gear and Lynx proportions!

Yes. And disk drives are quite efficient nowadays. Don't mini-disks run for hours on a little battery? Cd players do. I'm not sure the disk is going to be the biggest drain, especially given the apparent power of the system.

So the games come on static media AND a disc. I can see developers abusing this. We have DVD reading monster home consoles, and still most struggle to get loading times down.

Nice looking machine though. Analogue stick and D-pad should be swapped around though.

Come on Sega - do a DCP. :o

How likely is it that anyone is going to actually play any movies on it though? Sony are going to have to release a series of films on their own closed UMD format, that you can't play on anything except for the PSP. I personally don't see that happening at all. Why would film publishers risk releasing their films for a machine that doesn't have enough battery life to play epics anyway?

There are 2 main negatives here.

It's too big. Wayyyy too big. Where are you supposed to put it when you're out and about? It has to go in a bag\rucksack whatever.

4 hours (Assumed) Gameplay on a charge is not enough for any sort of portability. Those people saying that nobody takes their SP's outside are crazy. I have mine in my bag all the time for those pick up and play moments and a 4 hour life would kill me.

As JP said Devs will thrash the disc for textures and FMV etc as much as possible to make the game stand out. The market this is aiming at WANT their games to look amazing. Who doesn't but I cant help feeling that Sony have thrown too much power and versituilty at the thing.

But the most annoying thing about this is that the fucker will no doubt sell by the truckload. People WILL buy it because its a portable playstation 2. Dont get me wrong I am quite excited myself as I am a gadget boy but as I can only see this as a thing you use at home I dont see why I wouldnt just fire up one of the normal consoles.

Oh well. Lets wait and see.

I agree totally with Yiggy on this one.

It's simply not portable. And as for the Sony adverts with people walking about with it strapped to their neck ... maybe in Japan, but in the Uk you would by mugged for it within 30 secs of walking out the house. In which case it's in a bag.

Unlike my GBA SP which goes in a pocket and everywhere with me.

I dont think it's too big at all. Certainly it's big compared to say an SP, but it still easily falls into the catagory of portable handheld gaming.

And let's face it, I think I'd rather have that nice big screen than a smaller unit...

its large mobile phone big

If it fits in your pocket, I don't see what the problem is. It is going to be the next must-have gadget, so I don't think you'd be ridiculed if someone saw a bit of it sticking out of your pocket. I can't say I'm liking how the screen is unprotected - it's clearly going to scratch as much as the GBA MkI's.

What do you want then Phelan? Nice beautiful 3D games like what they've shown on a screen the size of the SP?

Erm, I'm not bothered by nice 3D graphics on a handheld. I have a home console for that.

I happily use my GBA SP all the time and the only two games I use is Advance Wars 1 & 2.

What annoys me is that I was covering the madness when the PS2 came out and I saw what happens to people when a product is released with too few units. I saw and reported on mums and dads fighting to get the last on in the store and when I heard Sony had some in store but hadn't realised them I was mighty pissed off.

I'm not a graphics whore but I love games. Which is why I'm not bothered by a handheld that is all about graphics. All I want is a handheld that has great games - all I see so far on the PSP is games which are coming out or already out on the PS2 - which I will play at home.

I want a handheld that fits in my pocket not a mammoth like both the PSP and the DP. I want a long battery life for long flights and a nice screen that I can see but most of all I want games with cracking gameplay.

Wasn't the 10 hours figure for MP3s supposedly with the screen turned off?

to people complaining about the size; how do you store your SP? personally, i carry a flight case around with me most times. this has mags, a paper, work stuff, my ipod, sp (in it's own case too) etc. i never walk around with anything in my pocket bar my phone, so the PSP is perfectly portable for most people.

with regards to the battery life, let's wait until someone at Sony has something more reliable to say about it.

Being a "graphics whore" doesn't per definition mean that you don't love games.

But why are you pissed off of Sony doing such stuff? It's just marketing in the end I suppose, and if it makes people happing of handing over their cash, well good on them I say. Be happy. Marketing is also Nintendo and Microsoft "bashing" Sony over their handheld and their online networking. It doesn't add anything really, but it creates a sort of atmosphere, I think Americans, and the press, love that kind of thing... Who wants to be a loser eh?

The PSP does do some amazing stuff, even if it's just PS2 handheld, that's still pretty amazing IMHO. And old games coming to the PSP.... well, if that's what the people want... The SP shows that people will buy them afterall, why shouldn't they?

If you don't want a PSP because of worries over battery life, etc, then I guess you'll just have to wait another generation :o

Who knows about Nintendo's device anyway, twin processors, dual screen, I bet that'll take quite some power as well. Who knows at this point...
