Indeed, however the word "mecha" stems from the word "mechanical". In the case of Koji Suzuki's Ring films, the word "ring" doesn't innately contain the letter "u" (although the phonetic pronunciation in Japanese would of course be ringu). Whereas with mechanical, there is an "a" already contained in the word. The Japanese are merely using this accordingly.

The reason for the segregation of terms is a simple and obvious one. Americans call Battletech designs "mechs" (despite having most of the designs penned by Japanese artists, but that's another story altogether), so the term is used to define American mechanical designs. Mecha is therefore used to define Japanese designs. Considering that Kawamori Shouji did the mechanical design for Armored Core and that the series is of Japanese origin, the terminology is necessary to delineate between the styles.

So whilst the term "mech" is wrong in the context of an Armored Core Nexus review review, it would be fine in a MechWarrior or MechAssault review.

I dislike FASA's use of uncredited Japanese designs in Battletech, but that is a separate issue of mistaking terminology in a Japanese mecha game review.

FASA pioneered and introduced the term "mech", though, starting this rift to which you so dilligently argue to keep rent asunder.

what's the japanese name for a sportscar? Would you call a nissan skyline by the japanese word for sportscars? Apply your mech/mecha rule to anything else and it becomes ludicrous.

if you did, could you understand why people might think you were a bit of a cock? especially if you tried to say it was THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE TERM FOR IT.

FASA copied the terminology from Japan, considering that most of the designs were nabbed from there. Christ, FASA didn't start the mechanical ball rolling.

As for FASA, I bet you hate them for starting the MECH ball rolling, though. That was my point. It was probably due to plurals. "Mechs" works where as "mecha" is allready a plural-sounding term. "Mechas" looks silly and sounds wierd.

Optimus Prime is a mecha because he is Japanese in origin (Transformers originated from Japan under the auspices of Takara). You are also a moron.

I suppose you could argue that 'mech' is kind of like 'hoover' - commonly used enough to be understood.

The word that the creators, players and fans would use is 'mecha' though. It's just courtesy and unambiguity really. A review of an FPS that called it a 'shoot-'em-up' (likewise calling a {one-on-one} fighting game a 'beat 'em up') all the way through would still get the point across but would reflect badly on the author in the same way. I'm starting to see why some people think there's a need for a games journalism style guide.

It's funny that some people are so severely intimidated by the notion of other people having gaming interests that deviate from cars, guns and tits, though.

It's just terminology, there is no cultural supremacy angle. It's there to quickly and clearly specify what something is, in this case the term "mecha" specifies that something contains mechanical designs that are Japanese in origin.

Neh, not exact, they blunted the nosecone on the Jetfire toy somewhat. Same molds though. As far as I remember they needed a flying autobot to balance the Decepticon air superiority :).
