Westerns

Mmm.

Bought my Dad the special edition DVD of Once Upon a Time in the West for Father's Day and spent most of last night watching it just to see if it was as good as I remember it...

Cracking stuff.

Harmonica, Cheyenne... Henry Fonda being an absolute evil bastard. Its like the perfect bookend to the genre.

Admittedly it's not the greatest western of all time (I actually still think that award goes to For a Few Dollars More) but it sure has put in me in the mood for more gunslinging.

Next stop: The Magnificent Seven.

In the meantime, all cowboy appreciation goes here... :)

Yes. Its fantastic. The opening is just... cool beyond words, brilliant, easily my favourite opening ever. B)

Although it's a popular thing to say I'd still say The good the bad and the ugly is the best western ever made and probably one of if not my favourite films ever too.

Why is Once Upon A Time In The West a bookend when there's Unforgiven and Open Range even now?

Because it wasn't so self-conciously epic like most modern westerns? Because it was so damn final for a traditional western?

Because, perhaps, it still hasn't been bettered?

Unforgiven is a great movie but it's not a patch on Once Upon a Time...

I still enjoy a good Western, and was impressed by Open Range. Of course it's not the staple Hollywood genre it was back in the 50s, but despite people always commenting on it being a dead genre there's always a very decent one every few years.

Normal westerns are rubbish. They are rubbish!

Spaghetti westerns are ace though. Sergio Leone totally took the whole black hats vs white hats and turned it into a more cynical, seedier type of west. Everyones hats are grey/brown, so...

Would you class The wild bunch as a Normal western? ;) cause that's certainly not rubbish.

Spaghetti Westerns are superb. I love the traditional Western too.

In fact, there's probably an argument to say that the spaghetti Western isn't really a Western at all, but we probably shouldn't get into a genre discussion.

If they ever make a screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower, it'll probably look a LOT like a spaghetti western. And that'll be a great thing.

High Noon also deserves to be watched , the DVD quality isn't that good but it did the real time, against the clock thing years ahead of the likes of 24

This years Open Range had what I think was one of the best shoot outs I've ever seen - in my opinion the brutality of it , especially the head shot and the shot gun sequence, was far superior to the stylised massacre of The Wild Bunch

It most certainly would. :) Although I think it would probably be impossible to do a proper faithful film(films) based on it. :D It would have to be an interpretation of some sort.

Good call.

Out of that particular trilogy, everyone seems to go for A Fistful of Dollars or The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and just seems to ignore the one in the middle. It's by far my favourite western.

What was the other western that came out this year? The Missing? What was it like, as I went to see Open Range instead (Robert Duvall = :D).
