So, I got a Master System

Wonderboy in Monster Land isn't bad (I seem to recall that the arcade version is much superior though), and Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap is ace. Worth owning a Master System for. It's the reason I bothered to mod my Master System to run at 60Hz. :)

California Games is another of my favourites.

Yod@ is absolutely right - The Dragon Trap is easily the best game for the Master System. Modding sounds good too, if you have the expertise.

I recommend New Zealand Story for the MS. Loads better than the NES or PC Engine versions.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land (hardest final level evar)

Yeah. I had to go through the level with the bell, so I could draw a map as I went through, then do it again with the other item (was it some boots, or a weapon? can't quite remember!) cuz you really needed that when you reached the end!

Very enjoyable game, though!

Even the bell told me the wrong way :)

I must have completed it about twice, from being on the last level 20 times.

What version of Master System did you get? It has a game built in to the unit (turn on without a game in).

Most have Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in, some MSI's have Safari Hunt and Hang On, later MSII's have Sonic built in.

MSI is definately better. You can play the secret snail game by holding right on the d-pad at start-up (without a gamee in) and you can use a Mega Drive I RGB cable on it.

Yeah, that's o.k if you had a CDROM. But doesn't help those that only had cart machines. I'm not dissing the PCE, by the way, as it was a cool machine. It had a lot of power & capabilities for the time it came out!

exactly. The fact that it has the word "complete" on it says something about OTHER PCE versions :)

feck off with your PC engine bollocks; it's a shit system. right, that's that then

Bonanza Bros. is ACES on the MS. Impossible Mission is another great title featuring MS speech (which is shite). I enjoyed Rastan on the MS, Wonder Boy has already been mentioned (and hasn't aged a bit, might I add). R-Type is alright, secret level included ;)

Choplifter was one of my faves along with Outrun (which I enjoyed more than the MD port :) ) although that HAS aged badly. Spy vs Spy is great for multiplayer and you could always grab a light gun and get Op. Wolf which was another good title on the MS.

Bubble Bobble! Fantastic Dizzy! Sonic!

WRONG!

:)

AND The PC Engine in general is like a Playstation 2 compared to the Master System, and you know it!

Thing is, the Master System NZS has more accurate graphics (the PC Engine conversion has strange colours due to the hardware's very limited pallette), and has more of the original levels. The PC-E conversion ends on the final pirate ship level, which was a huge disappointment to me. I agree that overall the PC-E is a better piece of hardware with some much better games than the Master System, but let's be honest, SMS New Zealand Story pwnz the Engine one.
