Spider-man 2

Vemsie, can't really compare the two totally different games. GFX and SFX wise Riddick rips the shit off Spidey but for fun and frolics I choose Spidey. Feels good just to roam and 'be' Spidey. Interim crimes are repetitive but it all helps to break things up and also helps to build up your hero points which unlocks better moves, some of which are really cool. Haven't really played the storyline that much but there is one mission which is a real annoyance involving someone called Quentin Beck[anyone who has played it knows what I mean :D ]. Totally pointless. I would say most would be best off renting before buying with this one.

Nothing quite beats climbing to the top of the Empire State Building and then chucking yourself off, feeling your bowels clench at the speed of your descent and then just before you hit the ground throwing out some webbing onto a nearby building and swinging to safety. :P Try it when you play.

Are you trying to stop spoilers or is he just referred to as Quentin Beck?

Just referred to as Quentin Beck, haven't beat it at the minute. Real pain in the ass. Much more fun to swing around NYC.

lostslug....it is :D.

The potential for brilliance is there but I'm concerned whether its worth a buy. Are there any videos of gameplay yet? I love the idea of just flinging around NY but I've just read on the IGN Boards that its "crap", "worse game ever", "True Crime is 100x better", "controls are terrible", etc. this has thrown me.

No rental places around here either.. :D

You do know who he is yes? It sounds like a kick ass Spidey fan thing. What do you have to do? I bet it's tailing him isn't it?

No, don't know yet, but ... he challenges you to a contest in Madison Square Garden and the first part is easy. You round up crims and drop them into pits using your webbing. Then for no reason it changes to you having sneak round an assault course he set's up and if he spots you 3 times it's mission over, and with the camera having a lookspring that can't be turned off it becomes slightly annoying when you have to do it for the umpteenth time.

I played it yesterday (NTSC version). It is better than before, and quite different. Instead of auto swinging you have to press the button for each swing, and you can run along buildings, and jump and glide between swings. But for some reason it still doesn't work as well as it should. Sometimes it doesn't swing and I fall to the road.

Also, it has no 16:9 support which is stupid as lots of older games do. But that isn't enough to piss off people as not everyone have HDTVs.

But Brucey doing the voiceover gets old REAL f***ing fast. Now, I love the chinmaster, from Evil Dead to Bubba HoTep (and I even have Running Time), but his brand of sarcasm is "a little much" as Alan Partridge says to the "Rude" Fanny Thomas in Knowing Me Knowing Yule.

He tells you how to jump then tells you to go jump in a lake. Maybe he should jump to some acting classes so he isn't relegated to doing voice overs for video game tutorials.

Nope - it genuinely is Quentin Beck, before... well, you know.

SPOILER...

He challenges that Spider-Man is a fraud and that he's just as good without any special powers. You, not surprisingly, beat him at his own game during the gameshow-esque challenge thing he sets for you - in front of an audience, no less - and then he gets pissed off. A couple of chapters later and bingo... he's back on the scene as you-know-who

I leave you guys alone for a couple of days and you get all scared and start doubting this game. Come here my children, gather round as I tell you why you'll be loving this:

I've been playing the game all week (Much to my suprise as I thought I wouldn't see this baby again until I bought my own copy) and I remembered why I loved it so.

The comparisons to GTA are valid, but only to a point. In fact, it actualy becomes a little like Tony Hawk's, but I'll come back to that later. You get to roam around a massive city, time passes on constantly between night and day, you can do main story missions or side quests and you can walk into many buildings. So far so GTA, but that's where the similarity ends, at least in any meaningful way.

I've become better at the game as I spend more time with it, and been upgrading my character (You can buy moves, of which there are A LOT) and hence getting more moves. Well, I really clicked with it today and I was a ninja today. With my character 3/4 upgraded I had many skills at my fingertips. The genius of course is that had I started with all these moves then I'd be crouching in a corner crying, ranting repeatedly "It's too much, it's too much, too much to rememer, I can't remember the moves, I can't, I just can't control him". Take every move you can imagine Spider Man doing, map it to a controler, and that's Spider Man 2. So, to make things easier you only have a couple of moves to let you get settled in, and as things become routine then you buy another move, master it and then you have another etc.

And this brings me to my Tony Hawk's comparison, and why today I was Spider Man. I just got in the zone, I wasn't thinking about the controls, I was just thinking "I want to do this" and it was happening. Going around the city was like having a really good run on Tony Hawk's, I was running/swinging around the city like the scenes in the movie. I was totaly in control and I was really zipping round that city. As someone said when they were watching me play, "This game needs a replay feature man, that was awsome".

As for the bad side? Well, there are some. Combat can go from excellent to frustrating. You have many moves, but they require a lot of skill to pull off, and sometimes you're left wondering "Is it that I'm not skilled enough or is it that the fighting system is a bit flawed?". I'm still no sure which of those it right. Also, there are some frustrating parts. One in particular REALLY sticks out and had me cursing at the really, REALLY bad design. It just really sticks out because it's a game where you constantly have fun, yet that one section is anything but fun.

Story wise, well it's really nice and varied. The main story is linked to the film and it's pretty exciting stuff, much more so than Tommy Verceti's generic crime caper. Spider Man's comments throughout are also amusing, to a point at least.

So there you have it, stop being big girls and chill out, clear your Friday for release date and thank me later.

Ho ho ho - now that is quite funny. You see, I had actually read that news item, too - and promptly completely forgot it. Now I can't cancel the order and will be stuck with a damn kiddies game. Shit.

Chuckle.

One for eBay.

Sounds about right, I'd give it a 7/10 or so. That's not a bad thing, it's a distinguished game. I think any Spider Man fans will love this, and the others will get some pretty good times out of it.

I agree with Gamespot's comments on the "repeated tasks" but it should be pointed out that these are usualy not story critical and the actual tasks involved in progressing the story are always fresh and welcome (Except that level) but there is a sense of padding at times when you have to collect "hero points" and hence do one of the repetetive tasks. Having said that, the tasks are oer prety quick and they're not awful.

Maybe for some of you this is worth a rental first. Personaly I had a lot of fun with it, and I'm a bitter gamer who hates everything :) Actualy, I did in fact dislike this a lot in the first hour or two, and I lay that blame on the fact that no other Spider Man/superhero game I've played actualy demanded skill from the player in order to use special powers. It was always the case that the special powers are easily available and triggered at will but Spider Man actualy requires you to earn to be Spider Man, and in the beggining you'll be just like Peter Parker when he starte off smacking himself against walls.

I have always like the Spidey character, so I will be going for it.

Looking forward most to using the webbing and pulling of some death-defying swings around town. If they have got this bit right (which it sounds like they have) then I can't wait to play this.

TR

thanks for the insight Monkichi

Just watched the IGN video review...

The draw distance on the streets is poor. Cars suddenly fade in etc...

The combat looks dire. Those juggle combos look ridiculous.

*crosses off to buy list*

I thought the draw distance looked great, or maybe I've been playing too much Morrowind.

My main beef was the rather samey look of all the buildings. It may have the layout of Manhattan, but it doesn't seem to have kept the personality.

The areas are huge and have a distinct flavour to them. If you wander around the lower east side then the buildings will look like that, but get to Central Park or Time Square and it's a totaly different story.

Draw distances aren't great, but nothing we haven't seen before in terms of pop-up. I've not seen a title like this which didn't suffer from some pop up.

TBH, those 2 points stand true enough for Vice city yet i think that has showed that even when things like combat and draw distance are flawed that there can still be a great game. All I'm saying is wait until your playing it yourself before you dismiss it.

The first game would have been alright if they took out all the sodding wall climbing...
Wall climbing? In a Spider-Man game?

;)

Those idiots! What were they thinking?
