Show me the money!

Spider-Man 2 Earns Record $180.1 Million in 6 Days!

Source: Coming Soon!

Monday, July 5, 2004

The Coming Soon! Box Office Report has been updated with the studio estimates for the weekend. Be sure to stay tuned there for the final figures on Tuesday afternoon.

Columbia Pictures' Spider-Man 2 earned an estimated $180.1 million from 4,152 theaters in its first six days of release during the 4th of July holiday, setting a record for biggest first six days ever, surpassing The Matrix Reloaded which collected $146.9 million in the same amount of time last year. The first Spider-Man earned $144.2 million its first six days, but that opened on a Friday. For the three-day period from Friday to Sunday, the Spidey sequel made$88.3 million, which is the top 4th of July opening in history, passing the studio's own Men in Black II, which pulled in $52.1 million for the three days. For the four days, Friday to Monday, the sequel made $115.8 million. Spidey 2 also marks the biggest 5-day opening total for a film with $152.6 million, a record also previously held by "Reloaded" ($144.4 million). The $88.3 million is the biggest opening weekend ever for the month of July, dropping Austin Powers in Goldmember's $73.1 million to second place. While it didn't pass the first Spidey film's weekend record of $114.8 million, again the sequel opened on Wednesday which gave moviegoers a lot of time to see it before the weekend.

Michael Moore's documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 dropped to the second spot adding another impressive $21 million over the four days from 1,725 theaters. The $6 million-budgeted film has already earned a big $60.1 million so far.

I really enjoyed it too, however I've not read the comics, but this shocked me..

**SPOILER**

He's unmasked now, Mary Jane knows who he is, as does Harry, Doc Ock and all those people on the train. Has this ever happened in the comic? It really took me by surprise and will surely mean the end of that sub plot.

The end 'discovery' was pretty good but it seems obvious where the third one will go now in terms of enemy. I want to see Kingpin or Venom!

So I'm now interested in reading the comics. Where's the best place to start?

Same with X-Men

Hmm, well that all depends.

I'd suggest for quick reading that the Ultimate Spiderman and Ultimate X-Men released over the past few years (and which you can pick up in graphic novel format) is a good read BUT what you wanna do is pick up the original Spiderman and Xmen bound copies.

basically cheaply printed original Stan Lee and Steve Ditko stories for Spiderman including his creation etc. Black and white and each 300+ page book can be bought for abouy 12.99.

I'll search for a link

Read this, because it's fantastic. It's a story of a photographer who has grown up and worked in New York as its superhero population has risen to prominence. As such, we get a really believable tale of many superhero origins (Spidey and X-Men included) told from an ordinary Joe's point of view. It is packed full of cameos and offers the reader a great chance to look at the major Marvel storylines (from Gwen Stacey falling from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Fantastic Four deflecting rocks from New York as it is invaded by Galactus) from a completely different point of view. The main character has no idea the new kid at the Daily Bugle is really Spiderman etc.

It's all very clever. The way it handles the human/mutant tension and fear is superb as well.

Really, I love this book. Incredible stuff.

You can buy it from Amazon. The Marvels hardback is £25-ish while the paperback is about £12.50.

EDIT: Oh, and special mention must go to Alex Ross's art-work. Every panel has been painted and his work is photo-realistic. Jaw-dropping. It must have taken aaaaaages to do.

Jeez-o, man! With all of this willy-waving it's a good thing you haven't photographed that framed artwork, or else we'd be subjected to an eyefull of hardcore reflecto-porn. :o

Did I mention my sealed untouched Star Wars Dark Empire sets both with page 4/printed the wrong way?

100th Hologram edition of Wolverine?

Original Arrival of Phoenix from Xmen?

First Appearance of Cable?

Mint edition Star Wars comic No2 from 1977?

Shall I go on ;)

You could make hundreds off all that STUFF.

Meh.

I nearly sold it before I came to Oz but I decided against it in the end.

Dark Empire is worth around 200 I think. Plus my Grant Morrison signed stuff and hell nearly 3,000 comics let me put it that way.

The whole new DC Robin series from 1-96

The whole Nightwing series including mint number 1

Catwoman, Batgirl etc etc too bloody many!

OK, OK. Here's one for the Spidey comics buffs:

Does anyone know of a storyline that saw Spidey visit the Isle of Skye for a bit of Teuchter web-slinging? I can faintly remember leafing through such a comic in Glasgow's A1 Books & Comics aaaaages ago. I should say that I've begun to doubt whether or not this actually happened. It may have been a dream :o

Yes it did happen cause I remember it too.

Do you know Pete who runs the comic store near A1? well it's a collectors place but he has half of it. He used to run the 2nd hand section in FP till they threw him out.

I know him to look at. He's that weathered older guy with the beard and stuff? Kind of like an ageing hippie?

Man, I can't believe that Skye storyline is for real :o

This news has made my night. I was honestly beginning to doubt my own memory. I was questioning my sanity. For years I thought it was real, but then the more I thought about it, the more absurd it seemed. I mean, Spidey running around the Cuillins with sheep and my Teuchter relatives sounds like the stuff of parody. Internet searches brought up nothing.

Why the hell didn't I buy it? I've really got to track these down.

I saw this Last night. OMG Tried to resist the pirate copy that landed on my desk courtesy of my workmate. But gave in to temptation the moment I picked it up. It was bloody amazing!!! If anything it has made me want to see it in the Cinema even more. Cannot wait for the DVD release. Will sound excellent on my home cinema system.

First Appearance of Cable?

New Mutants 87?

Isn't that like 99p? At least it was when I got it in the Oxfam bookshop...

Anyway Cable is teh suck. Only ever been good as a Deadpool foil. I hope the chances of him appearing in an X-Men film are somewhere around ther same as an NFL SuperPro movie getting the green-light.

EDIT: Phelan, A1's gone now... at least the GW one is. It's a Holland and Barrett's now... :)

I`ve cut back on watching movies at the cinema lately, skipping all the major and minor releases since the third LOTR, last Christmas. Haven`t even seen the latest Harry Potter. After the supposedly great reviews of Spiderman 2, I decided to take the plunge this Saturday, hoping that it could measure up the the first one, which was rather enjoyable.

Was it as good?

Sorry, no.

It was way, way better!

What makes it so?

The characters. They have evolved since the first Spiderman, becoming deeper and more interesting, rather than just being cartoon characters on screen. In other big sequels, like Superman and Batman, the characters stay the same. What you got in the first movie, is what you get in the second.

In Spiderman 2, the relationships evolve and become deeper, more human. I saw Peter Parker, Aunt May, Doc Ock, and the others as having conflicts going on between them, beyond the normal hero-villain stuff.

In the train-scene, this even expands to the the passengers, which becomes part of the story, rather than the normal bunch of undefineable characters put into the story to be rescued, as in any other action- movie.

Luckily, I hadn`t seen any trailers beforehand. I saw a program about the film on MTV the day after with a few spoilers, and have to say: Know as little as possible this movie before you see it. Just go and buy that ticket!

For me, with great characters that go way beyond the normal cartoon-stuff, Spiderman 2 is Oscar-material, far more than LOTR.
