Tony Hawks Underground

So what did everyone think about it?

me? i hear you cry enchanted by my sexy voice....

Brilliant! i say.

Tony Hawks skateboarding set the trend, tony hawks 2 built on this with extream combos, huge areas and great graphics. Tony hawks 3 for me was a downward trend for the series, rubbish. Tony hawks 4 added the change of the 2 minute timer, a nice addition which meant you could explore the lands more, but THUG, added a great* story which really worked well.

*In gaming terms

The story added to the gameplay i feel, you started out as a crap skateboarder and went through to become the best, the missions actually had meaning this time with you doing things to further your career and the cut scenes were a nice addition, especially the jumping over the helicopter one.

I did like the idea of getting off your board, made things a lot less frustrating, especially when you wanted to get to a certain area. The car bits were totally pointless and rubbish however.

The graphics also took their first big leap due to them not having to bother with a psone version, everything was detailed, solid and colourful, it really was a great game and personally i cannot wait for THUG 2.

And ive failed to mention the wealth of songs, the make your own challenges/levels and the superb multiplayer modes which meant even a novice could get competative scores without knowing the sweet spots earlier games had.

THPS4's Grass looks better tho,

Yes the story line was good, but the game is piss easy now.

All the Events where you had to get a high score i just performed a manual and did flat land tricks.

Same with vert grabs, makes the game so easy.

Still haven't tried it.

THPS4 dissapointed and the whole 'you can drive cars!' gimmick kinda put me off THUG. I should really give it a rent though.

If THUG 2 has full and decent Live support I'll snap it up in a second. Yeah, I know it won't happen though.

I like it. THPS3 is still the best of the series though.

Eh?! THPS 3 is the WORST!

They barely managed to adapt it for the next gen, control wise and level wise. Barely.

THPS 2 was the perfection, I still play it to this day. Attachments to the control system [balancing on grinds etc.], creating a skater, cracking level designs and all built on the amazingly addictive platform of THPS 1.

THPS 4 was a nice smoothing of the edges, yes, but you could feel the dev hands turning to the yearly cash-in too much

And THPS2 was best on the dreamcast.

Infact that is the best version in the whole series.

seconded.

I had 1&2 on the DC and 3 on the xbox

(THPS was my first DC title, fact-fans)

And you can see the downhill trend...

Indeed.

I've given 3, 4 and Underground a go, but nothing seemed to compare to 2.

Therefore, I picked up Tony Hawk 2x which is entirety of THPS2 along with the skate parks and music from THPS1, with Tony Hawk 3-quality visuals.

If you can find it (it was US-only) it's well worth owning.

Another vote for THPS2 here - THPS3 just seemed to be too easy and was more of a 'here is a place to get massive tricks using minimal talent' game IMO.

THPS4 turned the whole thing around - the difficulty was all-over-the-place but the general direction it took (more open levels - more ways to build yourself up etc.) was generally positive I thought - didn't have the addiction of the earlier games tho

THUG is an odd thing - I love the idea of being able to walk (amazing it's taken so long to include that really isn't it?) and I like some of the ways they've integrated the older and newer gameplay ideas (you can hunt for missions or just choose em from the challenges list) but the driving bits are terrible and they've taken some of the tacky ideas of other skate-games which the series didn't need.

Also, THUG is far-too-easy at first and gets to be a grind (sic)!

The spark which drove the first 2 is probably dead now - but that doesn't mean there's not pleasure to be had in there somewhere...

JP

p.s. I'm still waiting for a widely-available online TH game - I know the PS2 versions have had some online support since 3 - but no-one has an online PS2 do they? <_<

Where do I get this? Where?

You tell me. You tell me now or I will cut out your bastard heart.

By which of course I mean "please."

Dunno man. All the usual suspects no longer sell it as it was only a low-profile release due to the impending third part. It never got a PAL release at all.

Your best bet is Ebay (copies seem to be going for less than $5). Try and find someone that will ship worldwide and you'll be sorted.

Nice game, better than part 4 IMO. The dialogue/voiceacting is cringeworthy though. If they'd try to be more 'down with tha kidzzz', they have to put on diapers. The storyline is quite funny, progressing through the levels make sense now and there are some nice challenges tucked away in there. So far, I still stand by my opinion that THPS3 is the best though.
