The Day The Earth Stood Still

Managed to get some time to watch this again yesterday and it is still as profound and resounding with the logical clarity that I remembered it for. Admittedly, some of the more contextual societal troubles of that time are somewhat moot now, but the purpose behind Klaatu's arrival is still as unsettlingly immense. It was also remarkably modern in it's attitudes.

To my mind, this is a classic film that survives the onslaught of current ephemeral post modern attention spans.

It's a pity that Robert Wise had to direct the awful Star Trek: The Motion Picture...ugh...

Is it just me or is that post completely unreadable.

Thank you for reading my post,

It appears that Cacophanus can't help but flex his command of the English language in every post in an attempt to prove how intelligent he is.

Indeed, he uses English well, though he appears incapable of using vocabulary that is appropriate to the context. That context being an internet discussion forum, and the appropriate vocab being one that is inclusive and easily understood.

The fact is that the truly intelligent man will adjust his tone and lexis based upon the audience he is addressing. It is the fool who excludes people by talking 'above' them - the truly smart man will speak so as to include everyone in his audience. If that audience is composed of academics or students, then one must write 'up'. Yet if it is composed of regular folk such as you and I, it is only acceptable that one adjust the tone to something less formal.

Cacophanus seems to be a smart man, much like many other people here; yet his inability to grasp the many 'levels' of the English language lead to him being misunderstood, not understood at all, and ignored. I write in many styles across many publications, but I would never adopt Cacophanus' superior tone when addressing an audience such as the one we have here. If I had to edit Cacophanus for a magazine that has a similar audience to RLLMUK, I'd have to edit the living shit out of that post. It excludes a good portion of the forum, and such behaviour is rude.

The more people who understand you, the more potent your point will be.

Look, if people can't be fucked to learn their own language properly, sod them. I'm all for Cacky's unique brand of whack, yo.

Cacophanus,

...egregiously prolix...

As conjectured in the preceeding posts, Cacky continues to be ponderously sesquipadalian and positively abounds with the tauro faecal pseudo-intellectual argot that I recollected. Confessedly, his current missive lacks in sections highlighted in rouge, and discourses regarding mech belong to a different paradigm, but the overwhelming guff behind Cacky's dicta of late is still disquietingly malodourous.

To my reasoning, this is a quintissentially self-parodic post that may well weather the subsequent outpourings of ire and lampoonery.

It's a shame that Cacky had to scribe that awful Armored Core review... bleh...

Cloney

Top film, though. Klaatu Barada Niktu!

One of my favourite films, just brilliant. The blackboard scene with the professor has the kind of revelation quality that has been mimicked so many times in movies & comics. Love it. Was nearly my Film Club choice.

It was also remarkably modern in it's attitudes.

It's one of those movies which defies the time in which it was made, like the end of a naive age - the boy's mother's suspicions of her son spending so much time with a grown up - has aged absolutely brilliantly. Only the occasional jingoistic comment lets it down, but those are balanced by the conversation between Klatuu and the White House representative.

Ah, but to keep the mind active through stimulating the language used in conversation helps is very beneficial, in my opinion (and yes, I'm aware that typing on a messageboard isn't *exactly* conversation). Talking down to others is fine in the short run, but if you're stuck in such a position for too long, you'll start to forget about using your extended vocab.

Mind, I don't think many people on here have a clue what "ephemeral" means, me included.

[comic book guy] It's actually Klaatu Baraada Nikto [/comic book guy]

As for the rest, I did re-read that post and half think "Sweet Jesus" but on reflection it's no worse than (in terms of vocabulary) EDGE and it actually communicates something...eventually.

I do agree that the written word should be inclusive and comprehendable by all parties, but I will admit that I overdid it (though with the best intentions, that I can sincerely assure you).

Cracking film however and the DVD remaster is schweeeeeeet.
