McFly
I bought this from Cash Converters months ago and never actually played it till yesterday, i saw it was in Edges retro most played so i gave it a whirl. Its bloody crap and very hard even on easy. Maybe i'm trying to play it wrongly and not using the right strategy with the weapons. Any thoughts? Toms
it's because of the Drugs matey. Seriously, Axelay is brilliant. you probably can't play it, because you have forgotten how!
Davros sock drawer
I think it's terrible. Ask Synchronated Undertaker what he thinks of it.

Floppy
FWIW, I've never thought that Axelay was all that good either.

Space Renegade Ulala
It's aces. Soon there will be a rare 100% agreement on this because I will burn all the dissenting heretics at the stake. geldra
Even if it was shit (which it isnt) it would still be amazing just for Level 2's music.
angel
Axelay needs to be NTSC, played via RGB scart, played at least until the 2nd boss music, infact played upto the awesome last level. Seriously, its fabulous. At the time it was a legend. Shame the 1st level is probably the weakest.
ventress
The lava boss was my favourite. seriously, anyone who doesn't like this is dead inside and needs to be exiled to Gamesradar forums.
super_quincy
This game always divides this forum, I for one love it. One of my favourite SNES/SFC games. " Arms Installation Complete. Good Luck"
dumpster
I love it, although, I could leave the vertical sections and just play the horizontal ones. And I always thought I was alone in the love of the level 2 music. Its awesome isnt it? Glad others agree with me, as it isn't one of those games that is well known for the music. I loved the way the background becomes sprites at the end of level 2 so the ED-209 style boss can have a big rotating mode-7 head.

Floppy
Axelay needs to be NTSC, played via RGB scart[snip] Well, it does benefit from that sorta set-up. As someone who unfortunately only had a PAL console during the 16-bit, replaying many fondly-remembered Super NES games in their proper glory is a great experience. Anyway, I don't think Axelay is terrible or anything, just not that great.
hub2
Axelay is loved by the fans and always has. However I remember when it was realeased it got pretty mixed reviews which declared it nothing special. The slowdown was horrendus to boot.
Sgt Chaos
Axelay rates as one of my all time favourite shoot ´em ups on the SNES, yeah it is a bit hard, but not once you master the different weopans, and what level they are best suited on. My favourite level is the Uńder Water level, that music is great, even now.....and I´m not sure on this, but didn´t that level also use a higher resolution??? Whatever, a classic IMHO those were the days of Konami goodness
roberthazelby
A truly wonderful game in my opinion. My favourite music is also the track from level 2, but I do love the tunes from levels 1 and 2 as well. The best way to play this is on a chipped xbox. With a 5.1 sound system as well, it sounds amazing! Rob
jayboy
I thought it was poo...much better shooters on the SNES...Area 88, Thunderspirits (basically Thunderforce), Gradius 3, Parodius, Super Aleste, Aero Fighters. Axelay just seemed like a muddled mess to me, and i couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

Caleb Newcastle
"See you again for Axelay 2" Yeah. When exactly are we getting that then Konami? And that final level? An entire game of well executed vanilla shooting and all of a sudden you're thrown into a never-ending gauntlet of unkillable bastards. Is this the final boss? No? Is this the final boss? No? Is this the final boss? Yes? Is he dead? No. Quality stuff. Level 2 = best level. Round Vulcan = best weapon. End of.
Corleth the Fey
"Arms installation is complete. Good luck..." Axelay's what I'd call a vanity game. It's cool. It's got great graphics, and music. Check the quote, I love that bit too! But it never really played that well. Super Play only gave it a score in the 70's if I remember correctly. Super Play never got it wrong. Dimahoo
The art of axlay is good use of the weapons. Not just choosing them, but taking advantage of the way certain weapons set themselves up. Like the double pip laser (forgot name, and they look like pips). Its the second weapon for level 1 that starts at the bottom when selected the moves to the front. I swear that gun is sex in a box. Use it right and you can hit anything anywhere. There isn't a single level where its usefulness doesn't shine. Dimahoo
Ahh. So thats what you were talking about. Actually my Jap Cart use to corrupt for some reason. On level 2, the planet would sometimes not get drawn. Of course, no such trouble when Emued.
super_quincy
Thats a problem with UK SNES`s and import versions of Axelay. It happened with mine until I got an import machine.
Dimahoo
Odd problem that. Only occured with Axelay too. Actually in their day, Axelay did make some blinding games. If you use Mame and compare Taito and Konami games, Konami's were far smoother and played far better. Saying that, Taito always had some orignal title to save them from becoming too generic. Konami were always about movie conversions towards the end the end of the mainstream 2D era.
angel
Super Play gave it around 83% saying it was great but a bit light, if i remember correctly. I think JD did it.
