The long kiss goodnight

Underrated and absolutely ace. Like The Last Boy Scout, another Shane Black scripted corker.

Some of my random faves: The Killer, Hard Boiled, Once Upon a Time in China, Kill Bill, Blade II, The Wild Bunch.

And Demoliton man was Stallones last good action movie too, if you ask me.

Was that before or after Cliffhanger? Because I really dig that one.

Renny Harlin has made some great action films. Long Kiss Good Night, Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger.

Speed and Desperado are essential for this list I think.

Terminator 2, unless that's sci-fi. But if Aliens and Predator are allowed then...

And I really want to suggest The Fast and The Furious for it's glorious stunt driving and truck-based shotgun antics and lack of CGI, but it's not a very good film. Good action is not enough on it's own.

Also, Spider-Man 2... I'd suggest postponing the final list until a few more people have seen this. :o

Speed

Terminator 2

Matrix

Leon

Southern Comfort (does that count, or is that more of a thriller?)

Ghost Dog - Way of the Samurai

The Fugitive

Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Great Escape

Are we including war films as action films? Platoon, Braveheart, Ran etc. And what about Westerns?

A couple of people have mentioned Leon now. It's an excellent film, but is it really an action film?

I guess it's one of those multiple-genre films. Some scenes are undoubtably action scenes (ie the first and last sections). Some play more like a thriller. Not all films are all-out action like Die Hard so it's difficult to select boundaries.

Ghost Dog - Way of the Samurai

I've always wanted to see this but it's never been cheap enough and my local Blockbuster is crap.

Is it a straight actioner or does it try to be deep with poorly researched Samurai lore?
