The Biglime Action Fifty

The Rock - An absolute classic.

Ronin - has to go in. I just know it will.

The Matrix - No more needs to be said

The Last Samurai - A long shot, but I thoroughly enjoyed this, and I feel it deserves inclusion.

Umm, is Battle Royale allowed?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: safe the sci-fi for a sci-fi fifty.

No Matrix, no Robocop, no Starship Troopers and no Terminator. Though they're all great and have stunning action scenes.

Nah, that's silly. No 'action movie' list would be complete without Terminator 2 or The Matrix- whether they're science fiction films or not. They can be in both lists!

I nominate The Rock, Speed, T2, The Matrix and True Lies :D

12. Cliffhanger: The truth is, it's a man with no soul who dislikes Sylvester Stallone. Cliffhanger was a treat- Stallone back on top, and an action movie that took the set-pieces outside for a change. Some beautiful photography, and moments that relied on stuntmen and safety wires ahead of blue-screen and digital effects... it's a movie that still looks good today.

Cliffhanger is wicked. Nice to see that biglime. Great John Lithgow villain, one of the best openers in a US action flick, beautiful photography, great music, Stallone and Rooker doing what they have to do and ace action scenes. The setting is the icing on the cake.

We've come six pages and no one has yet mentioned Heat?

I suppose you gentlemen may not consider this to be an action film in the true sense of what an action film should be, but consider the gang's escape from the bank heist that goes wrong, consider the final sequence where Pacino hunts down De Niro... Some of the finest action sequences ever commited to celluloid.

Add that to the fact that it has a surprisingly intelligent script, and Michael Mann directing, and you can't really go far wrong.

Some film are a bit hard to define. Is True Romance an action film? Perhaps not, though it has a huge shootout in the end and some smaller action sequences in between. Including that awesome fight between Alabama and Tony Soprano. So perhaps it is :)

I'd define Heat as a "thriller" rather than an action movie, Ronin too.

That said, thrillers CAN be action movies and vice-versa, so it depends on your own individual interpretation, but I wouldn't class, say, The Fugitive as an action movie despite some good action sequences.

13. Tango & Cash: No sooner has one Stallone movie made the list than an other one comes along. Only this time, Kurt Russell is along for the ride, doing his Big Trouble thing, in a movie that's so ridiculous it hurts. And yet there's very little that this movie does wrong, and a whole lot that it does right. Just don't expect anyone to agree with you if you say you love it.

14. Blade II: Forget the first Blade movie. It started with a great action set-piece and went downhill from there. Blade II starts well and keeps up the relentless pace. The simple fact of the matter is that there are few action movies that have as great an ensemble cast as Blade II, and Wesley Snipes is one of our unsung action heroes. Compare Snipes' swordplay in Blade II to the unconvincing work of Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Not everyone can do it- Snipes not only can, he makes it look good.

16. Highlander: There are few movies as stylish as this one. For some, it's the swordplay that appeals most of all. For some, it's the brilliant Queen soundtrack. But for me, it's the performance of Clancy Brown as the Kurgan. Every move he makes is captivating, and he's one of the screen's greatest villains. See?

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - one of the top 10 for me.

Indiana Jones I guess is adventure... but Raiders of the Lost Ark is action packed and probably the best.

The Rock, Faceoff are both superb too..

Terminator 2 of course is probably top 10.
