BIGLIME'S ACTION 50

1. Die Hard

2. Aliens

3. Big Trouble In Little China

4. The Hidden

5. Con Air

6. Goldeneye

7. Out For Justice

8. Hard Boiled

9. Mad Max 2

10. Death Race 2000

11. Armour of God

12. Cliffhanger

13. Tango & Cash

14. Blade II

15. Tiger on the Beat

16. Highlander

17. Starship Troopers: If there's one thing Verhoeven is good at, it's making bad movies. And to a great extent, Starship Troopers IS a bad movie. But somewhere along the line, everything just seems to click. It's the kind of movie you would have made when you were 8 years old, stealing ideas from all the cool films you've seen, with a cast comprising of your action figures, your dog and your sister's Barbie dolls.

Verhoeven makes bad movies? Sure, Showgirls and Hollow Man aren't exactely brilliant. But Robocop, Total Recall, The Fourth Man and Soldier of Orange are aces. As is Starship Troopers. Smart satire, awesome action, superb Phil Tippet effects and a rousing Basil Poledouris score. And Michael Ironside. And great gore. But it's a sci-fi film, not an action film ;)

By that logic, Project A is a period film instead of a kung fu flick.

No, it's not. Sci-fi is a seperate film genre, like horror and thrillers. Martial arts, westerns, war movies, superhero movies and heroic bloodshed are all subgenres of the action genre.

Look it up, The Matrix, Terminator, Starship Troopers, Robocop....they're all labeled as sci-fi films.

I'm sure I said that on page 1... ;)

18. Point Blank: A movie all about confrontation, and the violence that lives within these moments. It's Lee Marvin's incredible low-key performance and Boorman's inventive direction that makes this movie more than just an action movie.

19. Hard Target: As much as I hate Van Damme (and I HATE Van Damme), there's something wonderful inside Hard Target. Maybe it's the Lance Henriksen factor. Maybe it's the lunacy of some of the action scenes. Maybe it's the fact that guns aren't very effective against the bad guys, while a kick in the face IS. Maybe it's simply because of that one moment with the grenade. The fact remains that, with the combined effort of John Woo and Sam Raimi, Van Damme has made it onto the list.

Action subgenres? There are plenty of westerns and war movies with little or no action in them at all. Schindler's List is the top rated war film on imdb.com and I don't remember Liam Neeson running about much with a machine gun, so don't bring labels into this.

The way I see it, if I'm in the mood for watching some action then I'm not about to dismiss a film just because it features some fictional science. These films should be included.

I totally agree. It's exactly the reason why Alien is not only one of the best sci-fi films ever made, but also one of the best horror films ever made.

Of course. I meant films like The Wild Bunch and Saving Private Ryan, to name but a few. There are exceptions to every rule. But enough of this. Perhaps biglime will do a seperate sci-fi list for me and Sean someday ;)

Hard Target eh? I'm not sure I'd call it one of the fifty best action movies ever but it's definitely cool. Mainly thanks to Henriksen and Vosloo, and of course Johnny Woo.

How does it feel to be hunted?

And I would tell you that all four are also action films.

You are familiar with Venn and his fancy diagrams, yes?

Besides which, the action in Starship Troopers far overrides any sci-fi that's going on. From what I can tell, it's set in the future, there are bugs attacking Earth, and that's it. It's action all the way. And satire, too.
