The Biglime Action Fifty

Man, I should have been following this thread more closely. I missed out on the Deathrace 2000 love. Great film. Each and every single one of Stallone's lines is an example of classic, cult dialogue. Ridiculously quotable. I love the bit where he first pulls up to the grid and sprays the spectators with bullets because they jeered him.

And I love all of the topless babes. The best thing about it though is the over-enthusiastic hepcat commentator. He is one of my favourite minor characters in cinema.

There's nowhere near enough vehicle action in this otherwise splendid list. Action movies are about more than just guns and kung-fu!

Ok, Deathrace 2000 and Mad Max are a start, but we need more.

Might I humbly suggest:

Top Gun (or Days Of Thunder)

Bad Boys

Terminator 2

The Bourne Identity

Speed

They're about big fuckin' explosions too.

1. Demolition Man - Huge Building gets demolished

2. Last Boy Scout - quite a few

3. Bad Boys 2 - Mansion blown up by cops

4. Long Kiss Goodnight - Oil tanker/ Bomb

5. Lethal Weapon 2 - Car Bomb in tower block

6. True Lies - The Bridge hit by missiles

Indeed. Classic. Not a fucking action film though.

Hmm, horror lists with no horror and action films with no action. I think I see a pattern developing...

Boorman always called it his 'action movie'. Since he directed it, that's good enough for me.

There's no action in it? You've seen it, have you?

No, no. I certainly haven't seen the 1967 revenge thriller starring Lee Marvin and directed by John Boorman.. I've definitely not seen it multiple times, and I've certainly never enjoyed it. Why would I? If it had any action in it, I wouldn't notice nor be able to make my own opinions about it.

You are, as ever, perfectly correct.

i'll keep going on about this until you put it in. The Terminator. you want action? the chases (especially the last one with Arnie on the motorbike), Club Noir, the police station... these are amongst the best action scenes ever filmed and if this movie doesn't get put in the list pretty darn soon then biglime knows nothing :P

Spider-Man 2 should be in here. Best superhero movie ever by far. And it has wicked action scenes.

Man its almost comical how polar opposite our tastes are. Spiderman 2 was great fun but was far too slow and had an insultingly banal ending. I'm not sure i'd put it in my top ten superhero movies let alone my top 50 all time action movies.

I'm very interested in hearing with superhero movies you think are better. Surely not Burton's Batman films with their complete lack of suspense and good action scenes? Or the overrated X-Men films, that don't come close to Spidey in terms of characterization, action, storytelling and sheer fun? Blade? Great action and that's about it. The Crow? Great style, not so great script. Superman? Nah, he's not half the character Spider-Man is.

Batman and Robin?

My arguments regarding Spider-Man 2 can be found here. Which is perhaps the best place to talk about this film.

off the top of my head

Batman

Batman returns

Darkman

Unbreakable

Superman

The Flash

Xmen 2

The Punisher (the new one)

The Mask

Jusge Dredd (hmmm, maybe not)

Ok, so only nine so far, but that was 30 seconds thinking. Gimme five more minutes and I bet I find a tenth.

edit: of course, the crow. You answered my question for me!

The Mask better than Spider-Man 2?

The fucking Punisher?

X2?

Don't even get me started on Judge Dredd.

Fair enough if you like those but I agree with precisely zero of those choises. In fact, I'd probably put the first Spider-Man flick above all of those. :)

Dude, Judge Dredd was a joke. I fucking hated Judge Dredd.

But yeah, I'd rather watch The Mask or the Punisher than Spiderman 2. I think the punisher is seriously underrated and one of the best action movies in years.

As for Xmen 2, I think that after Superman and unbreakable its the best superhero movie ever made.

X2, like Blade, to me never lived up to it's (admittedly awesome) opening. Because it has so many characters the script only scratches the surface of their emotions. It stays rather flat in terms of storytelling and characterization. And the action is, apart from the Nightcrawler stuff, not that impressive either. It's not an awful film but one I'm not in a hurry to see again.
