The Problem with 3D fighting games

Collision Detection.

Thats the most annoying thing of all, im pulling all these cool moves off yet because the other character is in a punch or a jump animation my body parts just pass through them. I except no matter how awkwardly i hit them, for it to connect, even if it does mean im put off balance with a badly timed move.

But whats worse, i come flying in with a kick and a PATHETIC punch to my little toe forces me five foot back in the air and loads of damage, my flying kick should smash his hand to bits.

I think a greater difficulty is that the traditional setups still use the up direction as jump. This makes dodging (or movement into the fore/background respectively) less intuitive than they and surely it is such movement that should be the big 'thing' in a 3D fighter?

My favourite 3D beat-em up is Powerstone, simple and effective to navigate and downright fun to pull off.

Someone's a 2d fighter fan who can't play in 3d... :P

Completely empathise mind; they're shit aren't they? [HUGE WINKY SMILY]

*Returns to struggling with Lion in Evo*

To be honest i HATE 2D fighters, they feel so jerky at times and dont seem to flow, unlike Soul Calibur.

Wait a minute, you are the DJ Sack, aren't you?

Anyway I'd argue that 'flow' is a problem. A person randomly hitting buttons in SFII is just going to sit in the corner throwing random punches like a moron.

In Soul Calibur 2 they'll run you down with Raphael.

Still infinite depth in simplicity and blah blah blah.

Can't play 3d for bobbins, myself. I'm ashamed I'm so bad.

yeah collision detections so anoying... ive never been fond of 3d beat em ups till Soul Calibur- a masterpice.... shame no 2 isnt as polished and has some random people in it, and the collison detections messes up a lot more oftern.

Whoa whoa. I wasn't slating it. All I said was the most innocuous moves seemed to have priority. Which is a bit weird when you're used to last minute full screen shine knuckling through a shinku hadoken...

I'd better not get nailed for this... I have been drinking :P

Too late now. Breaksmith will be here in a few minutes ripping you a new Akira shaped arsehole.

FUCKING HEATHENS.

Vf4 evo is not only the best 3d fighter, but the best fighter bar none.

The collision detection is fine it it and the balance is sooooooo supreme.

Nail on the fucking head.

These arseholes who complain about collision detection? Play your Soul Caliburs and Tekkens, you're not allowed to deal with something out of your grasp.

Best quote in VF4 Evo:

"I don't make allowances for old man." - Lion

nah. The best quote is either kage's "beneath the sky, no-one can beat me" or akira's "I demand stronger opponents".

Nah, I like it when Jeffry says: "Please dont....make me redundant. I know I've been complacent...".

Sting like a bee, bite like tiger[/yogibear]

Brad's got a Pirate's hat in FT. I can't wait to mac on you fools while dressed as a pirate. Amazing.

VF has a far more balanced fighting system than any other fighting game has ever had. There are moments where collision detection looks odd, but it never plays odd. That's one of the myriad genius decisions made by AM2.

If what you see makes no sense to you, simply completing the tutorial will explain absolutely everything. Priority, invunerabilities, everything.

Don't even talk to me about those other game thingies, there's no comparison at all. VF is nigh on perfectly designed.

*6 cans in*

But those character designs are derivative rubbish... compared to... ooh Guilty Gear X.

And it does make sense. I'm just shit at it. And bitter. :P

I think Virtua Fighter is a great series, I didn't like Tekken 4, I am not really bothered about Tekken 5 either unless it offers something truly special, which I doubt it will, and Heihachi surely has to have died by now?.

I have put more hours into Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament than any VF title but VF is far more rewarding and satisfying to play with real depth, unlike Tekken which is great for a quick fix.

I find DOA and SC to be better quick fixes to be honest, especially the former. Tekken's always been too counter-intuitive with it's right-left setup for me to get back into when I want a quick blast at something.

VF does kick all thier arses though. And any 2D fighter as well.

Ah well, might as well dig the hole properly then.

Akira is boring. More boring than ryu even. :D

At least Lion's quite obviously a cock.

"Why am I so great?"

dont worry matey, ill back yu up.

ps dont compare ryu (fighting badass) to akira (cheapass bullshit bland clone).

I'd like to quote my self:

Collision detection is a bitch!

Well. it is. I can't get my sphere to stay inside my fucking cubemesh.

It bounces, bounces, bounces, but suddenly escapes the walls of it's realm.

Fucking ball!

Most 3D fighting games are based around some weird scissors-paper-stone thing (even VF). Surely by now we should be playing IK-style precision impact-fests with intuitive but free-form controlls using real-time animation and physics? If I swing a three-quarter-circle with Kick held down I don't want to perform Dragon Snake Combo, I want to do a roundhouse kick, whether I'm reeling from a powerful punch to the top of the head or not. If it requires my character to snap his foot up in the air and end up lying on the ground after the kick and having to find an ingenius way of getting up whilst dodging the other player's kicks, well that's my problem.

I think you'll find all good fighters (incl SF2) use PSR relationship. Jab beats Heavy, Heavy beats medium and Medium beats Jab in SF2 (and so on for kicks).

With 3d fighters, the special moves are often activated via timed button presses as opposed to quarter circle + buttons, which is a lot harder to fluke.

VF is very cool, although the character designs are a bit bland. Tekkens are more personable, even if the Tekken series are being left behind. I do like the ability to customise VF4 characters, mind.
